At 112, Tessari beat Mitcheff (8-4), Robinson (10-5) and Inghram (4-0) to win. That's quite a streak for the freshman from Monroeville. What's really amazing is that this string of wins over former high placers and champs at the state level is the second best performance by a frosh from Monroeville at a big tourney. Tessari, Phillips and H. Stieber Wow. What incredible young talents.

Question for the cognoscenti: Has any squad ever had three frosh on a team at the same time that were even close to this good?

No, not even close.

There is no way any team has had a collection of talent this good. When you have 3 Brecksville Champions that are freshman on one team. Wow, that is something awesome in the water.

Eric Burnett knows something about mixing two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen.

The future looks bright for Monroeville.

I know Monroeville won't be able to win the DIII state title this year with both Pleasant and Troy Christian having great balance across the lineup. However what about next year all 4 wrestlers return and 4 will be even heavier favorites next year. Pleasant will lose there big scorers in Moore and Wilson.

So can it be done on just the strength of 4 great wrestlers?

Pointwise, I think Monroeville will just about max out this year. I think all four win titles, and they really have nowhere to go after that. Add a few more bonus points, maybe, but thats it.

My thoughts from the tournament...

Great tournament.

103; Stieber looked awesome, shock there. DiJulius is tough, just overmatched here.

112; Tessari looked very good. In the last three rounds, he beat Robinson, Mitcheff, and Inghram to win the title, thus earning a few OW votes. He is excellent on top. Inghram wrestled him very tough in the finals, a much better result than the pounding he took at the Ironman. Mitcheff then had a very good win over Robinson.

119; Logan Stieber continues his decimation of top level competition. The score was close in the finals, but Opfer did absolutely nothing on bottom, just laid there and did everything he could not to get turned. I will put it this way; Troy Opfer wasn't going to escape from Stieber unless Stieber let him up. Opfer had a great match with Sergent, finishing late for the win. Sergent beats Papesh in a close match for third.

125; Wonderfully balanced weight. Tom Pretty pins his way through, another very viable OW candidate. Pretty is exceptional on top. Kostandaris had a great tournament, finishing third ahead of some very good wrestlers. Isaiah Chapman was in every match, but couldn't close.

130; First of all, that pin in the finals was something of a phantom pin. From where I was, Vaughan didn't look flat at all. I'm not saying that Lazor wouldn't have pinned him with that move or that he wouldn't have won, but I didn't think that was a pin. Vaughan had a great 5-1 win over Fields in the semis. McCormick looked very good. Harrison Hightower had Will Palmer beat in a very good match, but, against the advice of Carcelli, rolled back in a ride instead of flattening Palmer out, and Palmer got a reversal with almost no time left. Hightower then teched the Perkins wrestler for seventh. This kid will be good. This was a good, entertaining weight.

135; Skonieczny did what he did, got a takedown or two and rode. He is so technical from the top, so good with the legs. Thome couldn't get out from bottom in the finals, but who can? Mike Mencini of Twinsburg had an excellent tournament, he is very strong. He got out of a lot of shots that looked to be sure takedowns. He can be a high placer at state.

140; Awesome weight here. Isaac Dukes had another great Brecksville tourney, just like last year. He beat Aaron Sulzer, and was leading Habat through a good portion of the match. He is so explosive, he is able to beat anybody. Habat, however, can kill you if you make a single mistake, which he did to Dukes and Lang. Dukes took a sloppy shot and got fived. Lang left himself open in OT and was taken down. Kyle Lang didn't seem like himself for a portion of the tournament. He had close matches with some guys he should not have been close to. He took a shot to the head during his match with Habat, and it had to be wrapped. He seemed to struggle after that. Aaron Sulzer's match with Dukes was one where whoever was able to dictate the pace would win. Dukes opened up the match and won, as Sulzer wasn't able to make the match a one move match, and wasn't able to rally from behind. Sulzer got an early lead on Lang, but was fived in the third period and taken to his back again after that. It seemed like Lang finally woke up after being down 5-0 (if I recall correctly). Sulzer-Lang for third was a good enough match to be a final at almost any tournament.

145- Tony Jameson has made a career out of taking risks. It has almost always paid off for him. Zach Toal is a phenominal wrestler, he does all the little things right. He is the type of guy against whom you can not afford to make mistakes. Jameson, leading 7-4 late in the second period and riding, got high on Toal, and Toal got the head, almost getting a defensive pin with Jameson's boots still thrown in. That was a situation in which you play it safe, late in the second period, riding with a lead, just ride out the period and move on. But that is what makes Tony Jameson Tony Jameson. He doesn't take the safe move, he looks to score no matter what the situation is, and this is why he is so exciting and good for the sport. It is a loss, only his fifth in high school, and he will move on. As for Toal, that is the biggest win of his career. He is an absolutely fine wrestler, and will make a great coach some day with all he does right. The kid is virtually mistake free, and, as we saw this weekend, can capitalize on other's mistakes.

152- Jedd Moore decimated the field, no surpise here. Louis Greco looked a full weight class smaller than Moore in the finals, but a wrestler mentioned in the above summary probably has something to do with that. Greco, though, had his second consecutive excellent showing at Brecksville. I would like to see this kid put it together at state. He attacked Moore in the finals, didn't back down, while presumably wrestling up a weight. Painter had a big win in the 5th place match over Goins, avenging a loss at the Ironman. Jindra had a very good tournament, but looked overmatched in the 3rd place match. He was Mentor's most impressive wrestler that I saw, looks for backs constantly.

160- Cubberly looks to be healthy, which, after the ugly way he went out at the Ironman, is a very encouraging sign. Wilson, predictably controlled all of his matches until the finals, where he defaulted after a few minor seeming injuries. I would guess he has some nagging issues, and you can't hide minor injuries against a wrestler who goes at the pace that Cubberly does. Riley Kilroy had a very nice tournament, impressive bounce back after a dissapointing Ironman, and a very good win over Cheatham for third. After his great Ironamn, Bryan finishes 8th. He has the talent, consistency seems to be an issue.

171- Chris Phillips and his green shoes won again. Nick Mills was very game, though, and attacked Phillips. I love that he does that no matter the opponent. He went on the attack most of the match against Roddy in the Ironman quarters. It didn't go well for him, but he attacked. He did the same thing with Phillips, and a lot of scrambles ensued. On most days, the score of this match would have been a more exaggerated win for Phillips, perhaps, but Mills really showed up. Perhaps Mills' strength (and that is a strong kid) had something to do with Phillips not finishing scrambles like I thought he would. Mills looks very good. I would love to see a state finals match with the attacking Mills and the defensive whiz Thomusseit. Evan Roth looked very good, running a clinic on the very good Spencer Adams.

189- Cody Lamberg continues to take steps forward with those tree trunk legs of his. Foster didn't seem to have the horsepower to finish some shots late in the match, and Lamberg took some nice reshots. Jontony of Strongsville continues to have a very good year, with a huge win over Bailey for third. Nathan Jones won the team title for Troy Christian by winning his fifth place match over Colton Bowers.

215- Matt Fisher defaulted the finals with a back injury, which was a shame as we weren't able to watch the two best 215s in the state not named Adam Cogar go at it. Zifzal of North Royalton had a great tournament, pinning in the third place match. Placing behind Fisher and Scales is a good result for almost anybody. Miller looked very good in his win over Whitehead.

285- Hiles wins with ease, somewhat predictably. Carpenter of St. X had a very good tournament, and is rather dangerous. He is a good sized heavyweight who moves well and takes some legitimate shots.

If I had to rank for OW,
1) Toal
2) Tessari
3) Pretty

Jameson lost 11-9. It was 10-9 late, and in the last two seconds, Jameson had a front headlock, tried something of a suicide roll, and choked Toal. Toal got a point for that.

Another question to pose. Has a team ever had four champs and not won a title? I know three has been done several times, the '04 Perry team sticks out, but has anybody ever had four and not won?

Re: your question as to whether or not a team with 4 champs has not won at Brecksville. In 1994, Shaker had three champs plus another finalist. We finished fourth as a team.

There is one thing about this tournament that has been bothering me. I want to take a second and apologize to the Lakota West Coach i ran over during my sons match with there 188 pounder. I was taping the match from the bleachers set up when the above coach stepped and stood in front of me.I then stood up and kinda boxed him out in hind site it was the wrong way to react. I want to apologize to that coach.

Ed,

Well as a West alum I will make sure that coach you did run over will get his apology. I am sure they understand about that.

Our 189 is something else. He makes up stuff as he goes along and just he can do damage but most of the time he ends up pinning himself with his own moves. However this year I think he could squeeze out of districts here in the SW and make it to state.
