After Alex Picazo is gone next year who do the Buckeyes have back at 174? Have we recruited anyone / has anyone signed around that weight? Can Wes Bergman get down there? From what I heard he looked pretty solid. Just wondering as it looks like our only weak spot in the years to come.

let's go up and not down
bump Johnstone to 174 as he is too tall to be effective at 157 and Nemec will get 157 or Nemec and Sponseller will switch depending on several things

Johnstone bumping up 17 pounds when he is already undersized is really our best bet?

LOL!
Cameron: the Bucks have a few options but I don't see anything great happening with this weight class right away. As you mentioned, Wes Bergman might be able to drop. I also remember talk of Cody Magrum making this weight for one season. But neither of those really address the issue for the long run. Nor are either likely to be very successful (and as for Magrum--do we really need to watch another big guy cutting too much weight. Hasn't Picazo been painful enough?).
There are two ways to shore up this spot: a transfer or recruits. The Bucks have added the young man from Washington. My guess is they'll get at least one more good frosh. But the "impact" recruits--Roddy, Spangler, Welch, etc...are likely gone unless some unknown surfaces at a tourney like Sr Nationals. As for transfers...I have no idea.
There is not a single program in the country that has a stud at every weight class at this moment. There are simply too many schools willing to spend to land the best kids--hence, they're getting spread out. I don't think the Bucks can do much here except to try and bring in someone "pretty good" and coach him up. It's the same thing they're going to need to do with Weakley and whomever starts at 285.
Complicating matters is that the best Ohio high school recruits of the near future are lower wts. Collin Palmer, David Taylor and Logan Stieber do not solve the problem of 174 and above. But you can't miss on them because all have the potential to be multiple AA's.
I think the type of squad you see this year with Ohio State--6 legit AA prospects and four other guys with varying degrees of talent/promise-- is likely to be the kind of squad you get for the next several years. And when you look at where they are right now--second in the Big Ten, 3rd at Vegas, 4-1 at National Duals--that's pretty d-mn good.

by undersize I do not think it applies to Jason need to be at 149 - if you remember his red shirt was given for him to grow into 157 - watch him try to lower his level - he cannot because of his long legs and height at 157 does not allow him to get lower and remain in balance - undersize as to put on muscle and grow into his frame is the undersize I see - take the J.D. and Cory route is the smart move by Jason as Nemec will be at 157 or 165

I don't think there is anyway that we see Johnstone at 174. I think that Johnstone was an undersized 157 last year and has grown into the weight somewhat this year. Nemec seems to be a traditionally built 157 and should be set to battle Johnstone for the spot next year. Johnstone has great quickness and leg attacks and by all accounts works his butt off and improves each year. Their is always the possibility that Sponseller goes 174, Nemec 165 and Johnstone 157. Sponseller and Nemec were 160 lb seniors, its not a huge assumption to think they could be at 165 and 174 two years later.

Hank posts, "There are two ways to shore up this spot: a transfer or recruits. "
Hank,
there is another way, seldom take by Ohio St but this is an "urgent situation" at 174: the Junior College route.
btw don't expect Johnstone at 174, in fact very possibly don't expect Johnstone to be on the team even---- Johnstone graduates soon and very well may begin the next phase of his life, the working world. ( So if he is 174 its because the working world and good life caught up with him, like it did the rest of us.)

Bob: I see your point although I had considered a "juco" as transfer.
I wouldn't blame Johnstone if he chose to graduate and forgo his senior season. It can't be alot of fun to make the sacrifice he's made. Still, his ability to stay close against the toughest guys in the Big Ten has had a huge impact on this year's success. Without him, the Bucks would have likely lost several more duals. If he does leave after this season, Ohio State really needs to find more depth in the 157-165 range.

Bob: Do you see Jameson at 157? I figured him at 149 with a redshirt first year. Maybe after next year?

Gotta believe that any one of a number of those kids could help the bucks and shore up what has been one of our two weakest weight classes this season. I see that Dino May of Northern Idaho finished 6th. He beat Picazo pretty easily out in Vegas earlier this year.

I think if the Bucks could get a JUCO transfer that could step in right away they would that would shore up the lineup right away and bring in a much needed lift there. The lineup next year will be much of the same as this year with the exception of 174, 285 and possibly 157.
