Discussion Topic: Ohio State v. Minnesota

This dual will happen Sunday in Minny. Your likely matchups:
125: Ness v. Triggas--Triggas has been generally good but the only question is whether he can limit it to a major.
133: Reiter v. Humphrey--Who knows? Reiter has looked at times like an imitation of himself. Humphrey has had a good season but has a nagging habit of getting the lead then losing against tough opponents. Should be an interesting match and no result would be too surprising.
141: Rivera v. Jaggers--Jags has been hot of late. Rivera looks like a national champ one week and a round of twelve loser the next. Both wrestlers have lost to LeClere while Jags has split with Russell and Ruschell. What does that mean for this matchup? I don't know.
149: Dustin v. Lance--They've wrestled two 1-0 matches so far and it's hard to see it going differently this time. To beat Dustin requires at least one killer takedown in your arsenal. Palmer's offense has improved but I'm not sure he can score on his feet in this matchup.
157: C.P. v. Johnstone--Johnstone specializes in keeping it close but he's struggled to beat the good ones.
165: Safratowich v. Sponseller--Saf has a quick, low shot and solid top skills. But in seventeen matches, only one wrestler has totally shut down Sponseller. Saf is not likely to be the next guy to do it. An upset is possible but I think most reasonable people would have to see this as a 2-4 point win for Sponseller.
174: Dretsch v. Picazo--Dretsch is good while Picazo has never been able to get untracked at this weight class.
184: Kish v. Pucillo--Without really knowing what's wrong, I can only assume Kish is injured and trying to recover. He hasn't looked like himself all season. Pucillo has been terrific and should win easily.
197: Malamura/Bronson v. Weakley--Weakley has shown heart but hasn't been able to break through in league competition. This week would be a nice time for him to do it but it's hardly assured.
285: Berhow v. Bergman--A likely major for Ohio State.
Assuming Minnesota has both Schlatters in their lineup, it's hard to envision a Buckeye win. The matchups favor Minny especially at home. For Ohio State to win, they'll need to get wins at 133 and 141 which are hardly assured (esp. on the road) plus 165, 184 and 285. Even under those circumstances--a 5 to 5 split--bonus points would probably favor Minny. It would help if poor Luke Mellmer showed up somewhere in the lineup but that doesn't seem likely.
Ohio State has shown great resiliency all season and they'll need it to find a way to victory in this final Big Ten dual.

Well if Lance is going to beat Dustin, this would be the opportunity. He's been injured and just coming back. In the prior 1-0 losses, did Palmer chose neutral or did he get ridden out? His ability to get out seems to have improved this season. It might be the time to try down if there are no TD's.

125 - Ness will get at least a major if not a pin, Triggas just needs to watch out for that cradle of his. Minnesota heavy favorite here.
133 - I like Humphrey here, Reiter seems like he is just cutting to much weight and it really is hindering his performance. Buckeyes favored slightly.
141 - I like Jaggers in this one. He has been hot of late and if he wins this he could set himself up with a great seed for the Big 10 tournament. Buckeyes favored.
149 - The battle between the last two four time champions in Ohio. Schlatter has to be the slight favorite here but this will be a very close battle. Minnesota slightly favored.
157 - C.P. has been wrestling like a national champion of late but will he back in the lineup for this dual is the question. If not Johnstone a favorite over Melmer who has been thrown to the wolves this year in the absence of the Schlatter boys. Minnesota favored.
165 - Sponseller should come away with a victory over Safrowitch who is sometimes tough to wrestle. Ohio State favored.
174 - Picazo has to limit the damage here keeping the points against him to a minimum. Minnesota heavy favorite.
184 - Pucillo regardless of who he wrestles has to be the heavy favorite especially how he has wrestled of late. Ohio State heavy favorite
197 - Weakley and Bronson both are at about the same level here. This one is a toss-up but could go a long way for the Buckeyes to win the dual.
285 - Bergman heavy favorite here I wouldn't be surprised to see a pin.
Ohio State has to limit the damage that Ness and Dretsch do and need to win 133, 141 and 197 in order to be in this dual.

you're always very in-tune to everything that's going on...techniques...trademarks and what's going to happen way before it happens.

My sister who is a senior was denied there and she has a 3.6 GPA taking honors classes and AP classes plus had a 25 on the ACT. Ohio State is becoming way to strict on what they want in a student. She will probably go to Miami or Indiana now.

ohio state is tougher to get into now, when i applied i had a 3.3 and a 26 from a private school w/ honors classes and i didnt get in.
thats ok though i like bg much better anyways

I have a 3.5 and a 25...both the minimum criteria for acceptance...but a 25 AND a 3.6 and you didn't get in!!!!

fact is the average ACT score now at Ohio St is
26 plus
, i get the Alumni magazine and thats the average. It aint our fathers ohio state, it aint the one i grad from either--- but i would have got in anyway--- with my habits in those days maybe not stayed in though.

Dan:
If the athletes were held to the qualifications that your sister is being held to, 90-95% of them would not get accepted to Ohio State either.
Doesn't seem fair to me.

I know 90% of the athletes at Ohio State wouldn't be there but at the same time I think that holds true with most schools. If you have something they need, they'll find a way in for you.
