Dan - you coach ar Kirtland, correct? Is Stocum your prodigy? Good stuff, and good luck this weekend.
Side note, I remember when I was in HS (granted, this was in the mid-90s) that you could know the pairings Saturday night after districts. As anyone else disappointed that they are not yet public? This suprises me.

D3 State Tournament Outlook: 285 pounds
Stocum, Southwick, and Hesson could all win this weight class. Edington, Addis, McElligott, and possibly Obringer are in the next tier, just a shade below.
Stocum and Southwick both lost only one bout all year, and both were to top-notch 215 pounders - Stocum 7-6 to D3 favorite Porter (who just won a district title at Maple Heights), Southwick 5-3 to D1 Beatty (who ultimately decided to move up to heavyweight and qualified in the fourth spot from the Hilliard Darby district). Hesson lost only twice and both times were at 215 - a 5-3 decision to two-time D2 state qualifier Busick (who just won a district title at Steubenville) and 3-2 to D3 state qualifier Waderker (who just won a district title at Heath).
Being a small heavyweight, Hesson's balance of quickness and size makes him an X-factor. For him to win, he must use his quickness to outfox Stocum and Southwick's size and strength. The Division 3 state tournament has seen great 215 pounders bump up and have success (i.e. Cameron Wade) because of their quickness but we've also seen them fall just short due to a lack of size (i.e. Mark Nagel).
Whichever one of the "big three" draws Obringer on his half of the bracket will consider himself lucky, but should do so with caution because that wrestler is more likely to run into an Edington or a McElligott in the quarterfinals, plus that semifinal against Obringer (or another tough opponent) - a big task - but, on paper, it is easier than the opposite scenario.
Stocum powered through the Maple Heights district. McElligott wrestled well against him in the quarterfinals until Stocum found his opening to get the takedown. Shortly after came the turn and the pin. it was the most exhilerating moment of the tournament (well, for me it was!) In the final against Morosko, despite the 5-3 final score, Stocum completely controlled the bout for 5:50. Two takedowns and an escape made it 5-0 with a ton of riding time for Stocum (that is significant here because it explains the lack of points). With about 10 seconds left, Stocum kicked out Morosko (not sure why) and Morosko shot quickly as time expired and Stocum smartly went to his base, giving up the takedown but securing the victory. Morosko, weighing only about 230, is quick and tough. I see him getting a mid to low place. I see McElligott being a possible upset specialist and getting a mid-level place. Artrip, who Stocum pinned in the quarterfinals, got fourth place.
Southwick dominated the Owens Community College district and I expected that. Behind him were Hamilton, Charlton, and Doughty in order. Stocum crushed Doughty 17-5 at the D3 Classic and pinned him and Hamilton at the Husky Invitational en route to winning the MVW award. Still, Hamilton, a pocket-sized heavyweight, only has three losses all year. Doughty is big and strong - definitely a football player. I don't know much about Charlton.
Hesson was very impressive at the Heath district, pinning Edington and defeating Addis in the quarterfinals 6-3. Budde finished in fourth place. I'm interested in hearing how the Hesson/Edington district title match went. All we see now is a pin for Hesson. My guess is that it was very close before the pin. I like Edington and Addis' chances for high to mid-level placement.
Obringer decimated the field at Kettering Fairmont, winning in the finals over Reynolds 12-2. I can't see anyone coming anywhere close to scoring 12 points against Stocum, Southwick, or Hesson. Lesh, who was third at the D3 Classic losing to Doughty, got third by defeating Treon 4-2. Obringer, another light heavyweight who has a most impressive record for a sophomore, should grab a mid to low place. I don't really see much chance of placement from the latter three but I've seen stranger things.

I do coach at Kirtland. I've been coaching or at least helping out ever since I graduated. These kids are like little brothers to me. I wouldn't trade the experience I've gotten through coaching them for anything.
We have three seniors on the 2008 Kirtland wrestling team.
Don Stocum was in eighth grade when I was a senior in high school and he was in the first class I coached. Since I was an upperweight, naturally, I worked with Don a lot. His workout partners, 2007 state placer Gary Steigerwald in particular, played a big role in his development. He's very coachable and he works hard. He has grown into a dominating wrestler and a great young man. A few weeks ago I met him at a dual at Notre Dame College at the end of his official visit and he indicated to me that he was very impressed by the school and the program. To think he'll be off getting his college degree and wrestling on a top-notch team is awesome! But nothing put a bigger smile on my face than him sticking McElligott from Chanel in the semis this weekend. We heard that familiar, "squeeeeeeeeeze!" from his father Gary as the ref slapped the mat and the crowd went crazy. There's nothing like it. Now it's time to finish the journey and get that state title!
Tim Straus, our 189 pounder, just finished as a district runner-up, so he'll also be wrestling for the Hornets in Columbus. He is a great kid as well and he's made his mark on the mat with an exciting style. His sister Liz, an all-state track runner, and I were in the same class since we were in preschool. I remember when Tim was knee-high to a grasshopper. Even last year he was wrestling junior varsity behind two excellent seniors. Since then he's grown so much. He grew into a superb wrestler and a man that built his own Mustang from a frame and spare parts. He was a sectional champion on the strength of a few pins and a 15-5 major decision in the final. He left no doubt. Now he's about to be wrestling at the state tournament. Wow, time flies!
Angelo Francis, our 145 pounder, experienced one of the most heart-wrenching moments I've seen in my time in this sport. He worked his tail off all year - in-season and out-of-season - putting in extra time before and after practice. En route to winning our sectional, he defeated two wrestlers ranked in the Brakeman Report. He was in a great position to qualify for the state tournament - in fact he would have faced a kid he beat at sectionals to make it out. Then, a few days before the district tournament, he acquired a skin condition. We had him at the doctor's office a half-hour after the first time anyone saw it. On Friday morning he got a doctor's note which cleared him to wrestle. The physician at the district tournament would not allow him to wrestle and since his word is final, Angelo's career was over. I felt so bad for him but there was nothing I could do. He is a great kid and he went out as a champion in my book! I have no doubt that his dedication and the experience he got in wrestling will help him to success in the years to come.
Royal Brettrager, a sophomore who is 19-3, placed fifth at the district tournament for us, which put him in the position of state alternate. When a coach of one of the wrestlers that placed ahead of him said he needed to talk to our head coach, I almost jumped out of my shoes. Maybe I did jump. He said there's a good chance that Royal will be wrestling at the state tournament. Nothing is for sure, but it looks good (for us).
We (Kirtland) advanced ten of eleven wrestlers to the district tournament with four champions (19 of 20 over the last two years, with 8 champions). At the district tournament we finished in seventh place with two (maybe three) state qualifiers. I've been told it is the highest district finish in school history. Our head coach, Scott Francis, is the man behind the magic. He's a great coach. Mike Jones coached these seniors for three years. Jim Pawlowski and Paul Clapp also do a great job on our coaching team.
It's people like Don Stocum, Tim Straus, and Angelo Francis that make this sport as great as it is. It's dedication and leadership like these three seniors have that make a successful team and a great season. I'm proud to have the opportunity to coach these young men.
Now we're back to work until Thursday afternoon when it all starts...
<thumbsup>

The pairings are up on the OHSAA web site. The delay is because of weather some districts wrestled Saturday and Sunday.

Mark: I read that comment as well but can't understand why weather would affect the ability to post results? Unless computers and fax machines weren't working, what difference would it make? It's not like the results are driven by courier to Columbus.

I agree, they should have been posted almost as soon as the SW districts were completed yesterday. Not that big of a deal, though, in the long run.
I just know coaches make plans about where to train, who to train with, etc, and having those draws sure would help.

We'll be training with Mentor and Berkshire among others. That puts our 160 pounder with D1 district runner-up David Jindra, our 189 pounder with Brakeman's D1 #2 pick John Harasyn, and our 285 with Brakeman's D3 #1 pick Travis Porter. We will be ready to win at the state tournament.

Dan, the Hesson/Edington and the Hesson/Addis matches were closer than the final scores.
The Hesson/Addis match consisted of a 5 pointer early for Hesson and then Christian battling back but running out of time.
Hesson is quicker than most of the 285 but he is also a small heavy. Edington is a small heavy as well, but he also moves a little better than most of the big boys and he has team aspirations.
The Hesson/Edington match was a lot like a 215 match to be honest.

Here are my first impressions at each weight class.
103- Stieber wins going away. The question is in terms of team race if Troy Christian can capitalize with a finals berth opposite of him - my guess is no because of Pierce up top.
112- More of the same with Tessari winning going away. The battle within a battle involves Reynolds and Campbell. I like Reynolds to make the semi against Tessari from a thin quarter. I think Campbell loses to Pizzuto in the third quarter. That would then place those two meet in a consi semi on Saturday morning. I like Heminger to make the final down low.
119- Logan Stieber is a super strong favorite. However, this is a very solid weight behind him - very similar to the DII/112 weight in that regard. I have Kovach as the opposing finalist, but that could be the Householder/Harbert round one winner as well.
125- This weight is an absolute mess as expected. Sergent does have a slightly cleaner path to the final than some others - Opfer, Pope, Carpenter. Donahue is a legit first round opponent for most; Oney is a tough wrestler for Sergent in the quarter; and Morris is tough for a semi. However, it might not be Morris in that semi - as he has to get past 2x placer Clark and either Carrisalez or Top Gun placer Coulter to get there.
The bottom half here is landmine city. Pope has a game challenge in Kuzma first round and then 2x placer Carpenter in the quarter - I like Pope to clear to the semi. Opfer is looking for a first state title, 3-2-2 so far in his career. He should hit the semi somewhat easily and then look to reverse an earlier loss to Pope.
130- This is another pretty darn tough DIII weight class even though Kolodzik and Hancock separate from the field. Coomes/Karnes are Powers/Hancock headline first round bouts.
135- Gambill and Thome headline the field here. However, Thome has a dangerous first round bout against Block - just because Block can get big points at any time.
140- This weight can be described in one word, zoo. Wrestle this ten weekends, get ten different outcomes (and possibly champions). I'm going for a Cloran v Pajestka final. Pajestka has the easiest of the quarters in my opinion. Cloran is going to have to be ready to go from round one - Ash to open, then Gombash in a quarter. Burns has the dangerous Schumaker in a quarter (assuming Schumaker can upend McDaniel).
145- Toal rules the day here. The Nelson v Stiltner match as a semi is a battle of state titlists (Nelson's two years ago) that have been maligned. Stiltner has a brutal path though with Kosky and Levy likely in his way.
152- Moore v Kusar is unfortunately a semi. On the other side, can the undefeated Black get through, or will it be the former placer Ortolani who dropped down late?
160- Wilson is the defending champ, but there are many here gunning after him. Raber v Kwiat is a brutal first round matchup just for the right to meet Wilson in a quarter. Yant v Utley could be very interesting as Yant moved down from 171 to avoid a freshman but could see this other freshman in the semi.
171- What else can be said about Chris Phillips. Adams is likely to see him in the semis, which would be a second straight semifinal loss for him. The question then becomes if he can win a wrestleback this time.
189- Superlative weight class. Neff and Jones could easily be your final. Bowers is the Pleasant name in play here; however he has a tough quarter against Miller with Neff in the same half.
215- One would think Porter should win this.
285- Stocum/Southwick as a de facto final in the semis. The bottom half represents an opportunity for a kid like McElligot or the trumped up 215 Hesson to hit the final.

Results are now coming in from the OHSAA.
- The Monroeville 4 have all won there matches. All by pins and none went more than 3 minutes either.
- Jimmy Householder a two-time state placer from West Jefferson defeated Travis Harbert also another state placer 4-2 in the 119 lb bout.
- The biggest upset is the freshman sensation Alex Utley of CVCA getting pinned in the first round by Bo Founce of Gibbonsburg.
- At the end of the 1st round of championship wrestling in DIII Marion Pleasant has 32 to 27.5 lead over Troy Christian. Monroeville follows with 16 points.
- Action continues in DIII at approximately 7:25 this evening.

Interesting storyline tonight with the team race between Marion Pleasant and Troy Christian. Both have six wrestlers in the semifinals and Pleasant has a 5 point lead over Troy Christian at the moment too. Pleasant and Troy Christian will wrestle each other in the 130 and 145 lb matches where Troy Christian is favored.
Pleasant then has another two semifinalists that are pitted against Tessari at 112 and Phillips at 171 which is a loss there. That leaves just Moore and Wilson as the favorites there but Moore has his toughest match in the form of Kusar but he is still favored.
This brings me to Troy Christian now who is favored in all six of the semi bouts tonight. If my math is correct if Troy Christian wins all six by decision that is 66 points for them and if all holds true for Marion Pleasant they would only get 22 points and at max 26 points with pin. It is looking like that the team title is going to be wrapped up tonight and it won't be as dramatic as we all thought it would be.
The question now becomes with Monroeville will any of them have a match that goes the distance at all during there state tournament career? My guess is NO.
