Discussion Topic: Will the Monroeville 4 be the next 4x State Champs?
Chue Vue added to this discussion on March 3, 2008

How about the Monroeville 4 (Logan Stieber, Hunter Stieber, Cam Tessari, and Chris Phillips) ... Do we have our next 4x state champs?

Yes, they will be four-time state champions, but no, they won't be next. The next four-time state champions will graduate next year - David Taylor and Collin Palmer.

Funny when these freshman from Monroeville graduate they will have more 4x state titles than St. Eds. Who would have ever thought of that.

Yeah, I probably should have reworded my question. What I meant was basically will they be 4x state champs...lol.

I don't think Tessari will be a 4x champ

Tessari is outstanding and will have the best workout situation possible for the next two years and wrestles a tough in season schedule. Coming into the season he was considered a state title contender and by the end of the year he was a heavy favorite. That shows this kid's learning curve is steep. In addition to that coming off his back against Heminger(sp) (himself a great freshman) showed alot of balls. I say Tessari is even more dominant from here on out.

Everything points toward the four (including Tessari) being four-time state champions, but you never know what could happen. Upsets happen every year. Nobody expected Rudy Hendon to beat Tony Jameson but it almost happened. John Hiles, Coby Boyd, Steve Wilson, and Daniel Kolodzik were among the biggest favorites to see their title hopes be dashed. Sometimes when looking at domination from a select few, we forget just how hard it is to win it all for almost everyone else. Heminger gave Tessari that reminder. Do I think it will happen again? No. But that's why it would be called an upset.

Squire seemed to me like he was going on to win four state titles, but he didn't. He not only lost this season, he lost to the same kid (Horner) three times. Somebody has their number, the question is, will they ever get the chance to wrestle them, and if they do, will it be in the State Tournament? Logan Stieber and Phillips will be the most likely 4xers. The younger Stieber will have to contend at a higher weight. I foresee no problems in adjusting, but you never know.

Scott is right about Tessari. His workout situation can't be better if he practiced with a collegiate team, with that said, he is the most likely to falter if any of them do.

Lastly, kids develop at different rates. Some of the best and most dominate wrestlers in Ohio history were not 4xers. Mollica, Heskett, Rowlands are just a few from the last 15 years or so. As freshman, Chris Phillips beats Mollica, but Mollica as a junior and senior beats this seasons Chris Phillips. You have to ask, how much better can they actually get? Is there somebody out there that is on a steeper learning curve and can reach the pinnacle before Phillips does, before Hunter Stieber? I personally doubt it, but that doesn't mean that I am right (most of the time I am, but not always.)

Coach Shaw: Excellent post.

One quick comment--Tessari is as talented as the rest of these guys. His Brecksville performance (a frosh beating 3 state placers en route to the title) would have been the talk of Ohio ten years ago.

In most years, Tessari would be the best freshman in the state of Ohio. This year he is behind Phillips and Stieber in terms of notariety. Tessari destroyed state runner-up Ingrham the first time they wrestled and defeated him in the finals of Brecksville as well. He also was 4th this summer at Cadet 105 in a very deep weight class. Not too bad, I would say.

I agree totally about Tessari, which is why I said "if" any of them falter. I truly believe that the chances are slim that they will not win 4.

That's absolutely true. What do you guys think?. I personally thought there were more upsets this year then there should have been.

Biggest surprises off the top of my head and in no particular order.

1. Boyd losing to Tank
2. The Stephens brothers losing first round
3. Genetin losing to Salupo
4. Jameson 23, Hendon 20

Those are the ones that leap to mind.

One that jumps out at me is Sulzer vs. Riedy. That was a big wow to me for some reason.

I think that Brian Stephens going two and out is huge. I also didn't expect Stiltner to not place. DIII 145 was one of the deepest weights at the tourney this year, but the defending champ going 1-2 was definitely an upset. You never know what the behind the scenes is though. Injuries, illness, stress, etc., etc. all can factor in to a wrestler's performance.
