Discussion Topic: Ohio state 125/133

What is Ohio state doing at these weights? IMO the most important weight to recruit is 125. We haven’t signed anyone or gotten anyone in the transfer portal. Maybe Ohio state is going all in on Figueroa, which if they get him will be my most excited about recruit in a while. ARIZONA state did pick up that old dominion 125. It’s going to be a big struggle at these weights next year. Ohio state has four very capable guys at heavyweight. Not many heavyweights can go down(it is yet to be seen if singletary will)and none at light weight ,which they have room to go up. Do people not think Heinselman has had two years to get bigger/better? Not sure how much he can improve He actually looked to regress. I just don’t understand all these good heavies and added two more national qualifiers in transfer portal but absolutely nothing still has been done about light weights. Ohio state has four national qualifiers at heavyweight. Has any school ever had that before on one team? On top of that Boykin who I think has a lot of upside is also a heavyweight, and Gavin Hoffman is listed as heavy. Koontz did look to improve but still not a type to score many ,if any at ncaas. 133 should be a tough weight next year. Decatur needs a redshirt and his 133 days look to be over. I’m sure the staff is trying hard, just wonder what the plan is going forward. Who is on the radar?

Nick: At the end of the season, Heinselman made some significant adjustments. He stopped attacking constantly and began to defend much better as a result. And when he did attack, he scored. he had a good Big Tens including wins over some guys who had beaten him during the season. He was ten seconds away from beating Indiana's solid 125 as well. Heinselman can be much improved next season and a top 12 top guy if not better. Let him start again while finding your next propsect (Figueroa or Poulin) at the weight.

Bucks still need to find a 133 prospect as well. My guess is the future of Decatur is 141 after next season.

Heinselman did get a win over a McKee at big tens Because McKee was clearly hurt and that was the reason he went 0-2. That Indiana kid cronin he beat last year. Deaugustin from northwestern he beat last year. Mackall who was top 10 this year I believe also he beat last year. Last year he had no bad losses really. This year he had many bad losses and started losing to guys who he previously beat. He regressed or stayed the same while others got better. Was he burnt out or possibly an injury? The results aren’t there.

Richie Figs has been verbally committed to ASU for two and half years now with his senior year still to go. Christian Pyles commented that even with this verbal commitment Richie has continued to take his visits. Pyles commented that Figueroa did get a chance to visit Columbus prior to the lockdown and was decked out in OSU gear (not that it matters). He was slotted to visit PSU but has not had the chance to visit. With ASUs recent coaching hires of Mark Perry and Frank Malinero I’d imagine that bolsters ASUs chances of keeping him; however the training partners may not be there. PSUs addition of Gilman certainly reinforces their position to land a top notch 125lber, but he may not get an opportunity to visit Happy Valley before signing day. OSU doesn’t exactly have a deep recruiting connection to California. Nikko Triggas is the last Cali kid I remember traveling back East to wrestle for the Bucks. I’ve seen no other mentions of big time 125 candidates for recruiting. I would’ve thought the Bucks would have been in on Steve Opullin (our of NY) as well, but that’s not been the case.
I’m not sure that either of the Koontz’s will be able to man the weight each and every week. The staff seems to really like Heinsleman, and by most accounts it appears that his issues are mental rather than physical. Jacob Decatur is the next rostered guy at the weight, but there seems to be uncertainty regarding size. Heinsleman still holds a redshirt available as well. Long sorry short, 125 is Malik’s weight to lose the next two seasons. He’s certainly allowed to improve.
133 will more than likely be some combination of Jordan Decatur and/or Koontz. The weight certainly doesn’t get any easier next season in terms of depth with Suriano and Fix reportedly returning . JDs freshman campaign was certainly lackluster, although it definitely showed glimpses of excitement. Koontz could certainly man the weight, but anything above a wild card selection might be an overachievement if this bear of a weight. Again, J.D. is allowed to improve. I’m going to keep speaking that into existence, although I stole that from one of our other message board posters!!!

ASU also has Raimo on their roster who will be a RSFR next year and was #4 recruit in the country his SR year. He is only 5'4 so I would assume he is a career 125.

There was a post on themat.com in which somebody said that the Indiana 125 who beat Malik at Big 10 (Liam Cronin) is in the transfer portal and is on the Bucks radar. ASU has a dearth of talent at 125. In addition to the guys mentioned I know they have Brandon Courtney for at least another year and just got the ODU kid McGhee (although it's being said he will move to 133).

Wouldn't it be the opposite?

You are correct sir, I misspoke. Arizona State has a wealth of talent in the lower weights. Ohio State (relatively speaking) has dearth:)

Over the past month, Flo has posted the school lists for the following 11 recruits (some are very tentative lists):

Braxton Brown
Andre Gonzales
Vinnie Zerban
Brandon Hoselton
Luka Wick
Evan Bates
Shayne Van Ness
Stevo Poulin
Trey Kibe
Cael Valencia
Nate Schon

Common schools for these 11 are:
9 -- Ohio State (all but Bates and Kibe)
6 -- NC State
3 -- Penn State (Van Ness, Poulin, Valencia), Okla State (Wick, Poulin, Valencia), Stanford, Cornell, Missouri, Michigan
2 -- Iowa (Valencia, Hoselton) plus a number of other schools

I noticed that as well. Nearly every major recruit lists the standard Iowa, PSU, Okie State, and the Bucks. You could throw Cornell In there too. Ohio State signed very few guys for the 2020 class, while Luke, Keshawn, and Kollin came off the books. Unless Cleary starts at 157 the Bucks do not project to start any seniors. This year is Malik’s make or break year. Perhaps the mandated time off is a good thing for some of these guys. The grind can certainly wear on athletes. As far as replacements..if they project to wrestle125 the Bucks are seemingly in on them recruiting wise. 133 and 157 both have guys listed on the roster, but no one that you would think that is an AA caliber candidate right now.

I would really like to see Malik and Decatur redshirt this year. Problem is, how ready are the other guys to step in? Could all these guys make 125/133?( Koontz's, Little Decatur, D'Emilio)

Poulin to NC State. Really had a good feeling about him going to the Bucks.

His HS assistant and club coach is the brother of NC State HC so seemed like a slam
dunk for NC state

That's a good point Jim. Would like to know who the main targets for c/o 2021 are now since this "dead" period goes thru July 31. I'd assume all transfer possibilities and 2020 seniors have all made final decisions.

I agree that Jordan Decatur would be better off at 141. I saw him at a few opens this past year and it always seemed like he was running from scale to scale trying to make weight at the last minute. I'd hate to see him do that for three more years. We all know cutting weight hurts one's longevity in the sport, and I'd like to see him in it for the long run, as he is a talented freestyler. That being said, if his goal is the big stage it's going to have to be at 65 kg, since I doubt he could make 57 kg and compete effectively under today's weigh-in rules. 141 would be much better suited for 65 kg.

Even though he'd be short for 141, I don't see it as much of an issue. Guys like Pletcher or Molinaro are/were short for their weight but have been successful.
