One of the best big men in Ohio high school history. Went to Wake Forest and pitched in college then spent many years pitching in the minors. I believe he had a few cups of coffee at the big league level. His brother, Steve, was also a stud for Ignatius and went on to wrestle at Stanford.

My favorite Buddie story was from 1989. My son qualified for Columbus (the last time at St John's) and there was a huge group workout at Richmond Heights. Coach Kieth Manos was running the practice. He has the guys running easy laps of the room.
He calls out that everyone who is "all state" in a sport, climb the ropes. Lots of guys are climbing.
A few minutes later, Coach call out that everyone who is "all state" in two sports, climb the ropes. Quite a few less but still a fair number of guys are climbing.
Next Coach calls out that everyone who is "all state" in three sports should climb the ropes.
Only one guy is doing it. As he ran by, I asked my son who it is and he replied with one word. "Buddie".

Keith Manos did a fabulous job at Richmond Heights but used to run ridiculous practices the week of state. We grabbed Pete Nathanson and left with a half hour to go because of how much live wrestling was taking place. Dave Sedmak and I both agreed that he'd gotten enough work and we didn't want to take a chance on him getting hurt.

We used to take kids swimming the Tuesday or Wednesday of the week of State (we learned this from coaching legend Lenny Ball). By that time the hay is in the barn and it's about getting your body feeling good and ready to go.

I wanted to take a moment and talk about Mike Buddie. I was lucky enough to play with and against him in two sports and watch in another. It's my opinion that Mike Buddie is the best all-around athlete that I have ever been around or seen. let me give you some reference for my opinion, I played football with Desmond Howard and Elvis Grbac and knew Robert Smith very well related football(watched film on him a lot) and worked out with Dan St. John(same high school) and had two NCAA all Americans on a team of 8 people, and my football awards are pretty close to my wrestling success,(you wouldn't believe me if I listed them) and Mike Buddie was and is the best all-around athlete I have played with and against(Robert smith is #2). He had multiple D1 scholarship offers in 3 sports and was drafted and pitched for Yankees(has world series ring). He was an intense competitor but what I love most about him is his kindness and humor really one of the most admired people I have ever competed against. You have to understand what it was like to play and watch him, he was a great, I mean a great high school athlete, and I never throw that word around. Just wanted to give some perspective on a person that deserves to be elevated on his athleticism and personality. He is an awesome person and I am so happy for his success, even if he went to Iggy.

#SuperFreak

I wonder how many athletes have been all-state in three sports in OH history?

[quote I wonder how many athletes have been all-state in three sports in OH history?[/quote]

depends on what "All state" means? first team all state/state champs ----or a mixture of 3 All-state mentions, 1st team, 2nd team, 3rd team, Hon Mention ??

First team/state champ in 3, maybe 10 total guys/gals in ohio history i'd say. probably less.

I believe Mike was first-team all-state in all three sports, football, wrestling, and baseball.

Very cool! I had no idea she was a three-sport athlete.

Did she go on to win a WNBA or even a Olympic medal??
