Tate Picklo had some impressive defense for an upper weight. I thought Shumate was the more offensive wrestler throughout the match, but Picklo was a counter and defensive wizard. Any time you have your leg elevated to the ceiling and you can manage to avoid a takedown it’s impressive.
Lots of great high level wrestling, even with the long gaps with no competition. You have to think that some of the injuries sustained during the matches may have been a result of the time off. I don’t recall a precious Who’s number one taking place with that many injuries. Hopefully they are just minor setbacks.
Was anyone else surprised by the Figueroa match? I’m not shocked that he lost, but for the number 1 overall guy to have limited offensive production was a bit surprising.

I have mixed feelings about the Ayala-Figueroa match. First off, Ayala spent a fair amount of time down on his hands and knees when in the neutral position, which I consider to be somewhat of a stalling maneuver. More importantly, Figueroa complained twice to the referee that Ayala was pulling on his jersey. The third time he complained, when Ayala scored a takedown, the challenge brick was thrown and video review revealed that the grab was intentional, basically implying that the two previous shirt grabs were also part of an illegal technique which Ayala employs, which I consider poor sportsmanship.

I’m unsure why I missed those points in the match, Bruce, but I was über impressed with Ayala. Again, my brain is basically Swiss cheese - hard set in some areas with immense gaps throughout.
Overall, it was great to be able to watch some wrestling.

I must have watched a different WNO because I saw Ayala take all the risks, create all the offense, react positively when the penalty was assessed (no chance that was intentional in my view, part of the reason we wear singlets and not t-shirts), and won with class.

No, you watched the same WNO as I did, you just saw the match differently, which is fine. I agree that Ayala was the aggressor but I think that was partly due to Figueroa being a bit mystified on how to attack a wrestler who was mostly on his knees.
Tee-shirt versus singlet may have played a role in the technical violation, but the replay showed Ayala's fingers clearly bent in a clasping position. If this had happened once I would chalk it up to chance, but Figueroa had indicated that it happened earlier, so I wonder how accidental it is.

You could be right but I would think the #1 P4P HS kid in the country who has probably wrestled a 1000 matches in his career has wrestled someone who was mostly on his knees?

I agree with Ethan on this one.
I am slightly puzzled as to why anyone would consider staying down on one's hands and knees would be considered as stalling? My rule book certainly does not say it is a stalling maneuver. In my mind, it is more of a tactic designed to keep your opponent from being able to do what you think he does best.
At least to me, that is being smart.
Over the years I have officiated a fair number of kids who wrestle like this and I never even thought of it as a stall.
Regarding the grasping of clothing, it was so incidental that the officials did not see it and had to go to review to make the call. While it is not a legal move, and certainly should be called, I can't say that it affected the scoring that occurred. IOW, I believe Ayala would have scored the TD regardless. You are making the assumption that because Figueroa complained that it actually happened. That is a big assumption.
Figueroa, by doing it three times, came across as someone who had no answer for the offense coming his way.
BTW, I am a singlet fan for this reason as well.
Just my $.02.
