Discussion Topic: Duals this weekend - 1/29 & 1/31
Jason L. Jackson added to this discussion on January 27, 2021

Ohio State takes on Michigan State and Maryand (B1G Network) this weekend. Ohio State should win both, but they need to wrestle well on Friday.

MSU
125
Malik’s toughest test of the new season will be RayVon Foley from MSU. Foley teched Sandoval from Maryland but lost, surprisingly to me, to McKee (MN). Foley dominated Malik the last time they wrestled, but Malik is a different wrestler this year. I think the Malik revenge tour continues and he gets the decision. I watched the match against Aguilar and it really stood out to me that Malik won numerous scramble positions that he not only couldn’t finish last year, but generally led to his opponent getting points. I think he beats Foley and ascends into the top 10.
OSU 3 – MSU 0

133
MSU put 2 different wrestlers out so far at this weight, Jordan Hamden and Tristan Lujan. I think Decatur should beat either, and I’m thinking he does. If he doesn’t, it’s time to put a Koontz brother in there.
OSU 6 – MSU 0

141
Jake Speiss looks to man this weight for the Spartans, and I think D’Emilio should be able to get a win here. Dylan has done some good things, but made some rookie mistakes. D’Emilio needs this one.
OSU 9 – MSU 0

149
Peyton Omania is a solid wrestler, but should be no match for Sasso. Blockhus (MN) picked up a major, so I’ll be a bit disappointed if Sammy doesn’t get bonus here.
OSU 13 – MSU 0

157
Chase Saldate has a pin over Maryland and a 1 point loss to Brayton Lee. That’s more than I’ve seen out of Cleary so far this year, and I’m giving the Spartans their first win.
OSU 13 – MSU 3

165
Jake Tucker is another solid wrestler for MSU, but this is a match that Smith should win easily. I don’t think he’ll get bonus, his conditioning isn’t quite there yet, but I see a 5 or 6 point win.
OSU 16 – MSU 3

174
Drew Hughes is a beast on top, but he’s average, at best, everywhere else. Kaleb runs a takedown clinic and picks up a major.
OSU 20 – MSU 3

184
Layne Malczewski knocked off Owen Webster (MN) in the dual, and Webster beat Rocky last year. I don’t like what I see out of Jordan so far this year, so MSU picks up another win.
OSU 20 – MSU 6

197
Cam Caffey is a stud, and I think he handles Hoffman, who won’t be able to match Caffey’s athleticism. Major for the Spartans.
OSU 20 – MSU 10

285
Brad Wilton has a win over Maryland, but Tate needs to finally get his offense going and wrap up this dual. I think he does just enough.
OSU 23 – MSU 10

This dual could be a LOT closer, as I think the first 3 weights are all toss ups. If OSU is down 9-0 instead of up 9-0, they could easily lose this dual. Conversely, I think the only weight that MSU definitely wins is 197, and OSU could blow them out if everyone in the lineup wrestles well.

Maryland
Maryland won 1 match against tsun, and has been shut out 3 times. They actually won 4 matches against Northwestern, but I think that says more about the Wildcats than the Terrapins. OSU should roll, and if they don’t, that would be cause for concern.

125
Maryland has put out 2 guys this year, King Sandoval and Zach Spence, with neither showing much. This should be bonus for Malik.
OSU 4 – Maryland 0

133
Jackson Cockrell is handling this weight for Maryland and he’s not had much success. Hopefully this coming weekend is a pick me up for Decatur. He should push for bonus here.
OSU 7 – Maryland 0

141
Danny Bertoni had a good weekend and a bad weekend. He was pinned by Speiss and shut out against Minnesota, but then beat Tal Shahar and kept it close with Red. I’m taking D’Emilio to get the win, but this might be Maryland’s best chance to steal one.
OSU 10 – Maryland 0

149
I’m expecting Hunter Baxter here, and he failed to score a point in two matches last weekend. I think Sammy sticks him, but I’m only calling for a major.
OSU 14 – Maryland 0

157
Maryland has put two different guys on the mat at this weight, with limited success. Michael Doetsch won a match against Northwestern, and I think we’ll see him. Cleary wins 5-3 or something like that in a controlled match that is too close for comfort.
OSU 17 – Maryland 0

165
Jonathan Spadafora is here and I see this as a comfortable win for Smith, but he probably just misses out on the major. If the weight cut is an issue for Smith, this would be a good spot for Kevon Freeman to get a match in.
OSU 20 – Maryland 0

174
Phillip Spadafora takes the mat here, and I see Kaleb picking up a major on a takedown in the last 30 with a rideout.
OSU 24 – Maryland 0

184
Kyle Cochran should be here for the Terrapins and he wasn’t bad last weekend. He picked up a win against the Wildcats and only lost 4-2 to Venz. The weekend before he wasn’t very good at all. Rocky should win this, but if he gets sloppy or stuck on bottom, he could get upset.
OSU 27 – Maryland 0

197
I expect Jaron Smith, and I think Hoffman should win this one. I expect 5-3 or something similar to that.
OSU 30 – Maryland 0

285
Maryland has sent 2 guys out this year, and neither has won a match. Orndorff should win this, and I’d really like to see some offense and not a boring pushing contest.
OSU 33 – Maryland 0

Looks like I'm going to get my money's worth out of the BTN plus broadcast on Friday, they are having seven exhibition matches prior to the dual, then three more after the dual.

So what you're saying is, instead of starting at 7, they will be starting at 4.

pm

Just saw Mich. has postponed Iowa, Illinois, PSU & Wisc. Tentatively the next duals for them will be OSU (2/12) & MSU (2/19) then right into the Big Ten Championships. Penn State has cancelled a couple duals already. What a crazy season!

OSU showing Echemendia starting both duals this weekend, and at 157 Cleary or Wilcox or Hepner. Hoffman going both duals at 197.

Koontz out scrambled

Refs butchered the D'Emlio match

bucks scrambling is not good

wilcox can't get out from bottom and gives up a lat drop

freeman gives up td with 5 seconds left in 1st, ugh. then gives up stalling call trying to prevent escape to start 2nd. then he gets ridden

i don't think the bucks have a td yet

singletary ends the bleeding. he does not look big for 97?? wasn't he wrestling HW last year?

nice win by malik, but that first stall call on him was ridiculous

that ride by spiess in the 2nd is what kills folkstyle. i get echmendia should be able to get out, but likewise spiess should be able to do more than put double boots in and sit on him

sasso squeaks by 7-6, msu guy is great at greco and went upper body, don't think sasso was ready for that

cleary match about as boring as you can get, did nothing and got ridden 3+ minutes but no offensive pts by msu guy while on top

smith and romero look really good. rocky, not so much. couldn't finish or get out. another msu guy that double boots, boring

hoffman almost got caffey, good match (except more double boots by msu)

nice throw by orndorf! some hw action, nice

Agree, can't finish a takedown cleanly. Don't look sharp.
I think Freeman may have been a little shaken up from that first takedown, he got his head bounced off the mat pretty good.
Singletary lone bright spot

i don't think the bucks have a td yet"

Good job by Malik. Hoffman converts that single at the end of the match and he wins, didn't think he would be that competitive. Are we witnessing a step up to the next level for him? I liked the action and pin by Bryce Hepner at 157 in exhibition match, might want to throw him in on Sunday, please. Cleary OK but too pedestrian, need to see some action. It's probably a moot point at 157 this year anyway with Gallagher coming in next year.

Big win for Malik knocking off a former AA. He also scored the only takedowns of the match. I’m seeing lots of takedowns from the crackdown position from the Bucks this year. Historically you’d be more likely to see that technique out of a John Smith coached team. I’m curious if that’s a Jaggers taught position or if it’s coming from somewhere else. Malik, Karchla, Romero, Smith and others have all scored takedowns from that position multiple times this year. Just an observation.
I thought Singletary looked pretty solid even if it was against a back up. He looks athletic and clearly strong enough to compete. I agree that Hoffman definitely seems to be wrestling with some confidence, which could mean the world. Sammy is what he is right now...a brawler. He’ll be in every match, and always have a shot to win on guys even if it isn’t pretty. I still don’t think his offense is good enough to go get a takedown on an elite guy, but a large percentage of people are probably in that same boat. But if he’s going to wrestle a counter guy, like Yanni, he’s going to struggle. He needs guys in on his legs. The guy today never even touched his knees on an attempted shot. We’ll see how he continues to progress.
Both Ethan and Kaleb absolutely throttled guys that have historically been pretty solid contributors. Has Kaleb given up a takedown this year? You have to love how solid he is wrestling this year. I agree with much of what has already been written about all the other guys. Nice to see Hoeppner get the pin, but....when you have three different 157s how many 157s do you really have?...the answer is none.

I will say this about Romero, I am willing to bet you can count on one hand how many guys have ever gotten off bottom when Drew Hughes was riding them. Kaleb is some kind of athlete.

Note: JLJ called 23-10 against MSU. The final score was 24-9. Not bad, my man.

Jared: I tuned in late (just at the end of half-time), but did get to see Smith, Romero, and Rocky (while the wife and daughter were enjoying MOD pizza). It was Romero that caught my eye with the crackdown position. My initial thought went back to recent John Smith technique videos being advertised or even the clip of him scoring the first takedown on a new mat. And then I wondered if at least Romero had been inspired by either. Glad to see I’m not the only one who noticed that position.

ps: in case you were wondering, John Smith still has it. Woof - he’s gooooood!
