Discussion Topic: 2021-2022 Lineup

Saw that Tom Ryan was having a live Q & A session on Instagram last night. I did not attend, but saw a couple of interesting things today regarding the 2021 - 2022 lineup.
Someone who was on posted this as the potential lineup for next year:
Coach Ryan talked about this potential lineup for next season:
25: Heinselman
33: Echemendia/Portal
41: D’Emilio/Ech
49: Sasso
57: Gallagher/Portal
65: Kharchla
74: Smith
84: Romero
97: Jordan
285: Orndorff
The first thing I noticed was of course Echemendia possibly cutting to 133. Then I noticed that neither Decatur nor Hoffman were even mentioned. Finally, the Romero/Jordan bump is something we've all wondered aloud about.
Then I saw that Will Betancourt, formerly of Lock Haven, announced his transfer/commitment to Ohio State. He's a 133 as well.

Seems like they want to RS Paddy, but no mention of Wilcox or Kinner makes you think if they don't get a high impact transfer then they'll end up pulling him eventually.
Lots of flexibility, and also lots of time before decisions have to be made.
Go Bucks!

If you have instagram :

He does mention Decatur at 141, and Ech is just thinking about 133. He mentioned Hoffman as well. He did not mention Kinner or Wilcox.
Based on what I heard it's more like:
125: Malik
133: Portal (Betancourt), maybe Ech
141: Ech, DeMilio, Decatur
149: Sasso
157: Portal\Paddy
165: Karchla\Smith
174: Smith\Romero
184: Romero\Jordan
197: Jordan\Hoffman
285: Tate

Just listened as well. It’s what Alex posted here as far as how Coach Ryan lays it out. A lot to be excited about and it’s ok to have reservations still as well. Don’t know a ton about betancourt but hopefully coming from PA gives him a leg up on the mat wrestling! I have a hard time not thinking that with this lineup the bucks have a shot at a team trophy next year. It would by no means be a certainty or expected that they finish in a trophy position, but I think it’s a possibility. Still a lot can change.
Excited for the future but there are definitely some improvement that has to happen to achieve the level of success we’ve come to expect from the wrestling bucks!

Cutting Echemendia to 133 would be a mistake. Puzzling that it's even being discussed.

From the Instagram interview with Coach Ryan, it sounded like Ech wanted to explore the move to 133 himself. Ryan mentioned that Ech was quite versed in nutrition so maybe the move down could be done. I’d rather see guys wrestle their natural weights rather than cutting a lot.

Betancourt is here for depth only , not really thinking he is even close to a starter in the big ten. I think he also was brought in for damage control( he is really good friends with Feldman). After Tervel leaving the staff may have made sure we can secure Feldman. Not a top 100 recruit and just inside top 20 at 120 pounds a couple years back

There were some pretty good programs interested in Betancourt as a transfer. He is your likely starter at 133....ready or not.

One way to help your teams mat wrestling is it to bring in someone from a state that emphasizes it.

What are you basing this off of? As Hank mentioned some big time schools were after him. Purdue and Oklahoma were 2 of them and I know everyone’s man crush on coach Lou, so if he wanted him I assume he is pretty good.

I am basing this off of being a borderline ranked top 20 wrestler at 120 pounds his senior year. Has never beat anyone at the division one level....not ranked in the top 100 overall prospects.,,unless he has improved very significantly isn’t even a borderline NCAA qualifier. Koontz may win the spot in my opinion. I hope he proves me wrong and is a stud. But show me a result that he has beat anyone.....Decatur would beat him handily IMO. But his days at 133 are probably done

You may well be proven right. But unless something changes, he's the starter.
