Finals of U20 WTT's at 61k. Unbelievable. These guys put up about 60 points in their 3 match set which Bouzakis won 2-1. Constant attacks and scoring. Obvious respect between the two future teammates. The highlights are on Flo.

The Bucks have two incredible talents arriving in the fall. Throw in that D'Emilio just made the challenge tourney finals at 65kg and Bucks are well positioned moving forward at 133-141. Jordan Decatur, who took 4th at 65kg, is also in the picture.

I should also mention that Mendez was coming off a 3rd place finish at the WTT's for a senior team...a tourney where he was beating Seth Gross by 9 points before falling. All Gross did this weekend was win Final X over Daton Fix.

And to think Nick Feldman is considered to be the prize of this recruiting class.

Definitely the highlight of the U20 tournament. Two contrasting styles made for a very interesting matchup, even before the added intrigue of future teammates competing.

Mendez wants to beat you with movement and pace. Bouzakis will pick his spots and wants to go straight through you. Despite the wild scorelines, it was a very close series. In the end, Bouzakis' ability to turn 2 pts into more was the difference.

Considering Mendez took the first match before dropping 2 and 3, one has to wonder whether going through the challenge tourney took a bit of a toll on him. On the other hand, you could argue Bouzakis had to wake up after coming in cold. Classic rest vs. rust scenario.

Regardless, both of these guys are absolutely elite, and very closely matched.

Did anyone else think Bouzakis looked bigger then Mendez or was it just me?

I am super impressed with both but esp. Mendez. He wrestled four matches before going best 2 of 3 with Bouzakis. He never looked tired. Mendez did a lot of quality wrestling over the last few weeks and his only losses were to Seth Gross and Bouzakis. And Bouzakis had a huge advantage.

If Mendez showed a flaw it was par terre defense and knowing when/how to shut down a match defensively. Correctable issues.

That said--college folk is a different sport. I do think Mendez probably has the eaiser cut to 133 so he's more likely to be the starter. But mat wrestling is brutal. Hopefully, he can get out on bottom.

I'd love to see a group of four with Mendez, Bouzakis, Decatur and D'Emilio.

I happened to check YouTube today for these matches, and all three were just posted by USA Wrestling:

They are both great on their feet. It will be interesting to see who will be the better mat wrestler. With so many points coming for laces and back exposures it's hard to figure which will be the better folk style wrestler. Hopefully they both will be great at different weights.

Mendez is obviously taller but Bouzakis is definitely stockier. Bouzakis may be bigger now, but Mendez's frame may have more potential to put on weight and move up.

If they're the same weight, how are we going to get both in the lineup?

The plan is for them to wrestle off this year and the winner will not redshirt. The winner of this match is probably an all American this year. Then mendes will put on some weight and move up to 141 more than likely.

Hard to pencil in a true freshman as AA.

It won't be easy at 133 next year. RBY, Fix, McGee, Cannon and Byrd returning AA's, Vito joining the weight, plus Ragusin, Phillippi, Foley, Colaiocco, Latona, LaMont all still there. Crowded top 12.
