After this year I really love Ohio States chances to again be in a hunt for national title again. In two years I like Ohio States chances against anyone and even may be the favorite with current commits and rosters. We all know the transfer portal can change things fast however.
I finally think after about a decade plus that Penn state finally is going to be very beatable. They lose starroci kerkvliet and brooks all after next year. Rby and dean this year. Facundo, van ness, Haines, and Bartlett don’t seem to be the next superstar of college wrestling either. They definitely won’t be bonus point machines either that we have been accustomed to seeing from a penn state team. I think the rest of the NCAA has finally caught a break.
I take Feldman and Mendes over any of the young penn state guys. Add in Geog and bouzakis and I really like our chances. Then add it welsh in 2023 who beat penn states best recruit Barr in class of 2023 and Bird beat penn states best 2024 recruit Sealey it gets me even more excited. I am optimistic for the future of this program and think we are just around the corner for another team title.
I think another huge key is where will the Ferraris land? If Iowa gets them they may be hard to beat. I am praying for Rutgers or an irrelevant program. Ben kueter is a world champion coming in and Cody chittum also who Ohio state just kissed out on. Definitely going to be hard to beat with Two Ferraris added to the talent they are already bringing in.
I’m ready for all these 6th and 7th year Covid seniors to exhaust there eligibility and see some new faces in the sport. It’s been a rough few years but I think bright days are right around the corner.

I’m curious to see if Kueter sticks with wrestling. I believe is also a big time football player that is going do both at Iowa.

PSU will continue to dominate until proven otherwise. I appreciate your perspective but Cael has proven repeatedly that he's the best at developing high end talent.
Bucks have landed a gem in Mendez. The rest of their guys are as unproven as the PSU guys. As to Iowa, Brands is a good coach but no better than the Bucks at developing talent. Their advantage is guys want to wrestle in front of a rabid fan base. So they continue to attract transfers.
Keep your eyes on Michigan as well. They are recruiting great talent and have NIL money to spend via Cliff Keen Athletics.

This.
I want the Buckeyes to win every year, but Cael hasn't "lucked out".
He's a better coach in the areas of subtle importance, the ones that maximize the overall stewardship of what collectively wins and wins consistently.

Ohio state has for the most part developed their recruits at a pretty good rate. I think we are maybe undervaluing and over valuing penn state and Ohio states job. First which top 10-20 recruits have failed to All American under Tom Ryan?
1. Decatur which I think was always over ranked anyway bc of freestyle and still has eligibility remaining
2. Keshawn Hayes which was completely screwed bc of issac jordan and mcckenna so didn’t really get a fair shot. I think lost to Isaac by a point in wrestle off
3. Chase singeltary which was a tweener and beat several alll Americans like Mason parris but quit the sport.
Let me know if more if I missed any bc the list is short.
Now let’s think of guys that outkicked their ranking from high school. I’m talking about guys outside top 20 high school p4p just from my memory I’m going off of again
1. Nick Heflin
2.kollin Moore
3. Reece Humphrey.
4. Ethan smith.
Now I’m to penn state which guys outside the top 20 overachieved
1. Anthony ceasar
That is literally the only one if can think of. Again give me more examples if I miss
Now didn’t meet expectations
1. Jimmy gulibon
2. One of the altons at least
3. Teasdale
4. Berge
5. Verkleeren
6. Manvillle
This is just off memory so I may have missed a lot.
Now I understand where Cael makes up for is he hits grand slams. You can basically tell by year one who is a grand slam and who isn’t. Penn state doesn’t have that David Taylor, Ed Ruth ,mark hall, rethorford, nickal type of young kid. The sophomores and freshman are all very beatable out of the young core. The best kid is probably Levi Haines which paddy is very capable of beating on Friday. He doesn’t bonus either at the NCAA big dance level which is key for a championship team to earn. The recruits we are bringing in are better also. All I’m saying is this is not the usual penn state we have best accustomed to seeing. Doors will be open for other teams. No chance they dominate unless they bring in some top transfer portal guys. Not with current lineups. . If someone wants to bet right now who will be a better team in 2 years at ncaas I will put money on Ohio state. It may be short lived however. I am very worried about guys like jax Forrest and Bo Bassett going to penn state. They will be the next extremely elite level NCAA guys I believe and may be a package deal.

I'll bet you a $20.00 gift card from Pizza Hut that Penn State will place higher than Ohio State at the 2025 NCAA tournament while simultaneously hoping I lose the bet. Deal?
*Niemann to arbitrate; loser mails the gift card to the winner.

PSU will always have top talent but I just don’t see the bonus machine top talent on the team right now with some of their young guns. Those young guns have been there for a while. Haines skipped his senior year to train at NLWC.

I will take the bet. Too bad Pizza Hut is not the same pizza I remember growing up anymore.

I will fulfill my role, but I must ask - my like Nick mentioned - if one wins, and the reward is for Pizza Hut, does he really win!? Hahahah!
I think a pastrami sandwich from Hank’s place would be a better award! But alas, we all can’t just head over to Hank’s any time we want.
ps: again, I’m in as the arbiter.

Btw, I'm pretty sure Starocci has 2 years of eligibility left because 2021 didn't count towards eligibility. He can be a 5 timer if I'm not mistaken.

I'm excited for future bucks. Mendes seems legit. He has a chance to upset the champ. Like zain did vs Logan at PSU.
Ive never been to a home match. Is it considered a tough place to wrestle for away teams? It does not come across on t.v as loud or imposing.

If you ever want a history lesson or to gain some perspective or to have a good laugh, go back into the archives of this site or yappi or wherever you get your wrestling fix (I don’t think theMat.com has an archive anymore), and read what people said when Taylor and Ruth graduated. Read what they said when Nolf and Nickal graduated. These EXACT things were said. Until someone dethrones them, and then stands at the top looking down for a few years, it’s Penn State.

100% accurate.
Incidentally, InterMat now has a forum that's basically the new mat.com
