Discussion Topic: Is Zach Neibert underrated?
Ethan Moore added to this discussion on March 29, 2008

He just rampaged through the Jr Nationals and state tournament (in a tough weight).

I rarely see his name mentioned on the forum, but he is creeping up the ladder of the Ohio best in class rankings.

I'm curious about how much he cuts, what he projects to in college, etc.

Any insights?

Neibert is often forgotten about in that class of 2009 mostly due to Taylor his teammate and Collin Palmer. Neibert right now seems to be wrestling his best right now. I would put Neibert about 4th or 5th in the class of 2009.

1. Taylor
2. Palmer
3. White
4. Neibert
5. Lang

What are the odds right now on each of the top 5 becoming Buckeyes?

Neibert not forgotten, in latest AWN all classes combined rankings dated March 13, 2008 Neibert ranked # 7 in the nation at 119, not too shabby (Logan Stieber is # 1).

the wt he just won at NHSCA doesnt seem all that tough to me--- the wt he took 3rd in at IRONMAN was definitely tougher with Stieber, Sam White, Garofalo, Papesh, Orano from California, Ben Sergent, and David Klingsheim from California.

Neibert lost to Sam White 6-5 in the quarters, wrestled back and beat Papesh, beat Klingsheim and beat Garofalo 4-3 for 3rd place. Sergent DNP. Neibert pinned Garbrandt in state finals, that was impressive.

WHere would you have Toal in your 2009 rankings Dan?

I totally forgot about Toal.

I think it would look like this with Toal.

1. Taylor
2. Palmer
3. Toal
4. White
5. Neibert
6. Lang

White may have beaten Neibert, but as a college recruit I would rank Neibert higher. (and I would guess that score would be reversed at this point.)

White's unwillingness, or inability, to attack on his feet will be exposed at the next level.

Neibert seems to just be realizing his potential and is a real blue chipper.

Remember White is also a two-time Cadet AA in some very tough weights. He was 4th at 105 in 2006 and was 2nd to Stieber in 2007 at 112.

I think he is underrated. People in ohio don't give him enough respect.

Funny thing... I remember practicing freestyle with him at raiders when he went to Beavercreek before he moved to Graham... I asked him how state was, and his reply: "Hell"
good times, good times

Underrated? No.

Underhyped? Yes, until now.

Zach Neibert was superb this season and is undoubtedly the #2 ranked 119 in all of Ohio (behind only Logan Stieber). He controlled matches against Johnny Papesh and Cody Garbrandt at state when it mattered most. Now he's an NHSCA Junior National Champion. That's awesome.

Thanks Dan... That was the word I was looking for.

I could understand why he said, "hell." Neibert went 3-3 at state his freshman year and was pinned by Bo Touris in the consolation semifinals and then pinned by Kyle Ciccarello in the match for fifth place. Him changing schools to Graham has benefited him greatly with the workout partners he now has.

In regards to White's style, he only wrestles like that against Clark for whatever reason. He destroyed Mattingly at 125 this year, majoring him in the dual. This summer at Cadet Nationals he defeated Jerome Robinson and 3x Minnesota state champion Destin McCauley before falling to Stieber.

I would not be surprised to see White at either 125/130 next year and truly dominate the competition in D1. He will be a top-notch college recruit.

I agree that he is a top tier recruit, I just think that Neibert has passed him, based largely on his more aggressive approach in the neutral position.

No knock on White.

Neibert's made a profound leap from his freshman to junior year. At least some of that can be attributed to the transfer to Graham. One would have to say wrestling with David Taylor every day in the practice room is going to make you better.

Neibert has had very impressive Fargo's:
2007- JN FS 119 5-2 (losses to Triggas and Sanders, wins of some note over Dearden and McCormick)
2006- CN FS 112 5-2 (wins over Carew and West of some note, losses to Belleville (3pd) and Williams (2-1,1-0))
2005- CN FS 98 3-2 in 6 rounds (win over Luna, losses to Furches 6-4 and Love 7-6)
All three years he had a loss in the round when the pool went down to the four AA wrestlers. Every single loss in Fargo is/was to an eventual AA.

Neibert also placed 3rd in this year's Super32 only losing a "goofy" match to Langel (Langel was the NHSCA Sr champ at 112 over Futrell tonight). He also had wins over NHSCA Sr 125# runner-up Albright, NJ state champ DelleFave, and CA 112# state champ Klingsheim in this event (along with beating Mitcheff).

Coming out of LAST cycle (August 2007), I had Neibert at ninth in his class - I'm thinking that moves to at least seventh if not higher (Taylor, Palmer, Lang, White, Toal, Scales as possibles above him).

In terms of Sam White, he shows good offense against anyone but Clark. Against Clark, I think that pace just gets to him - and he has figured the best way to match Clark's pace is to let him go and try and poach a counter score.
