Pretty disappointed with who will be wrestling. Brackets are posted online. Only real wrestle off seems to be Shumate vs Geog. Paddy, demilio, bouzakis, kilkeary, mccrone, Carson, welsh, sasso, will all be sitting out. Looks like clarion will be a better view of who will be starters.

Davino and Gonzales may be a good match. Gonzales nearly beat Ragusin and Bouzakis last year.

Also want to see how Birden matches up with Hepner. I think Birden has all the tools to be very good in college.

Nick, Birden before getting Hepner faces Carter Chase. Could be a good match as Chase did decent last year as a redshirt frosh. Agreed that Birden has the tools to be a good one. He’s very difficult to score on. But I give Chase a chance here.

Gonzalez-Davino is the highlight of the night. Gonzalez is a top 20 type of performer.

Where is Carter Neves?

Birden beats Chase 8-2. He had over three minutes of RT.

I’m not going to take too much away from an exhibition, especially one where Chase huffed and puffed for most of it, but I’m excited for Birden. He had some big wins in high school and his losses were to blue chippers and were always tight. He just doesn’t give up scores. A long leg is the hardest kind of leg to score on, and Birden’s legs are really long.

165 is wide open with Sasso’s health and uncertainty with Hepner after a poor postseason last year. Birden will get an opportunity.

Shane Griffith is 6-0' tall and I always liked the leverage he exhibited when he wrestled. The former NCAA Champ started at 165 and ended at 174, but was lanky and tough to wrestle. Hoping Birden can be that guy for the Bucs.

Birden was probably the most under rated wrestling in the country last year. He had two losses at Ironman in quite possibly one of the toughest brackets ever. He lost to Ferrari the number one p4p wrestler in the semis and then lost to Lockett in a double ot tiebreaker because he lost the coin toss. Lockett is the number three wrestler in 2025. He also has wins over Sealey (world champ I believe) and Henckal both Penn state recruits and top wrestlers in their respective classes. I think his athleticism and length will translate very well to college and could have enormous upside. Looking forward to watching his development.

Just wondering how you lose a match because you lost a coin toss?

The only way I can envision that (and it still isn't the coin toss that lost a match) is in a 0-0 match going into the UTB. To my thinking that is the only time a coin toss could possibly affect an outcome. The other guy wins the toss and is better at the position he chose than you are at the position you are in.

Is there something that I am not clear on?

It was 2-2 going into the ultimate tiebreaker. Both guys had two escapes. Winner of the coin toss chose down ( Lockett). Birden wins the toss then he chooses down and almost 100 percent wins the match. Neither guy rode the other for any significant time in that match at all. While yes the coin toss didn’t lose him the match it greatly benefited Lockett.

That is the exact same scenario that Davino beat Blaze. Davino won the toss.

Wrestle offs
125 – None scheduled. I will be disappointed if Kilkeary can’t win the spot. McCrone is a bigger threat to pin someone, but Kilkeary is the better overall wrestler, in my opinion. With neither having a redshirt available, I imagine we will see both at Clarion, maybe each gets a dual start and then a starter is picked for CKLV.

133 – With Bouzakis at U23, the Gonzales v. Davino match is realistically a prelim. I think Davino wins this one. I’m not convinced we ever see Davino v. Bouzakis, but the coaches surely will. We will likely see all three at Clarion, but with Davino having a RS available, I am guessing he takes it this year. I am not convinced he is such an upgrade that it is worth burning it this year.

141 – Flerlage and King didn’t wrestle last night, so I assume one is injured. Doesn’t matter. Mendez techs either.

149 – Cannon should beat Reeves and will get a match against DD. I would be very interested to see that match. I think Cannon can give DD a match, and possibly win. I don’t think he is a huge upgrade, and there is something to be said for experience, so I assume DD starts this year with Cannon getting some matches and allowing DD to rest.

157 – Brown getting a tech was nice to see, hopefully he has grown into the weight some. Herman losing to Schierl was disappointing. Hopefully Paddy stays healthy this year, he was definitely wrestling better before his injury last year.

165 – Hepner v. Birden reminds me of 125. Hepner is more dangerous, but may not be as complete a wrestler as Birden. I give Birden the edge in this one, but if the staff feels that Sammy will be back for sure, I think Hepner starts until that time.

174 – What will they do….what will they do. I assume that Carson starts and Rocco takes a redshirt. Rocco can wrestle unattached, but doesn’t get the free five (5) matches. No wrestle off means no information.

184 – Ryder mans the position with ease, and if he can improve his base wrestling without sacrificing his explosiveness, he is an AA threat.

197 – Maybe the best wrestle off (at least the most competitive) will be here. I think Shumate will be better up a weight. I think Geog lost some of his athleticism bulking up, so it will be interesting to see if he can get that back. I favor Shumate personally.

285 – Feldman starts his journey to knocking off the traitor in the finals.

I’d be surprised if Rocco sits. He’s a returning finalist and a good bet to return to the podium. Carson hasn’t been elite or healthy in a while. If you’re gonna redshirt Rocco, then you might as well punt and also redshirt Mendez.

Last year the Bucks were deep at 184 with Hoffman, Shumate, and Ryder. Now it’s one of the more defined weights. Things change fast.

D’Emilio if healthy is a better option than Cannon. But the allure of the unknown with Cannon is tempting. He’ll get his chances.

When does Bouzakis compete at U23 Worlds?

So the coin toss did not cost him the match, it was the inability to ride?

Was this at Ironman or some HS event? If it was a HS event, and was 2-2, there would be no coin flip for the UTB. It would be based on first points scored (unless there was a USC call made in the match).

As you should see in my other post, I did not understand and as I explained, what I am reading makes no sense from a rules standpoint.

He lost the coin toss at the end of the first period, so his opponent chose down, got out and scored the first point. As such, his opponent had choice in the UTB, and escaped.

The posit is that if Birden wins the toss at the end of the first, he escapes, scores first and has UTB choice. Given he had escaped twice already, there's a better than average chance he escapes again and wins the match.
