125- mccrone has vaulted himself into the top 10 and only lost to title contenders, and was in those matches. He has gotten better every single year and his top wrestling will give him a chance in any match. Kilkeary may be on his way out as I don’t see any situation where the staff should give Vinny the nod. Even if the margin was razor thin you have to go with the guy who can score bonus. Prediction 6th place ncaas
133-bouzakis has also improved a lot from last year. He has already avenged three losses and probably should have won cklv. He can beat anyone in the country and think he has a real shot to be a finalist. Crookham the number one guy he did beat in high school so that may even give him some confidence He has the physical ability, his downfall is just mental/technique at times. Good start to the year
Prediction 5th ncaas
141- Jesse NCAA champ. Hopefully he gets one seed so he doesn’t need to beat Bartlett then Allirez. Not sure how that seeding will go.
149- demilio haven’t seen enough. I can’t believe cannon got so big he couldn’t challenge here. Probably round of 12 like typical Dylan.
157- paddy looked good at cklv. Losing a close one to one of the top in his weight. He stays healthy I believe he again is an all American. Prediction 7th place
165- Sammy needs to get much better. Hepner may be the better option but can’t prove to stay healthy. Sammy just isn’t big enough for 165 I don’t think either. If Sammy can qualify I will call that a success. Prediction he wrestles better in march gets an at large then goes 1-2 ncaas
174-Carson if healthy is top 5. I’ll just assume he is and say 5th place
184- Rotogotzke seems to only be able to win matches where he can put a guy on his back. I think he qualifies but not expecting more than a 2-2 ncaas type of performance.
197-Geog I think probably is the only weight where I see no chance of AA this season. I just hope he can stay healthy and qualify which I think he can. 1-2 ncaas
285-Feldman seems a little dinged up and this weight class got a little tougher this year. He is not wrestling at the level he was at end of last season. Gable, Trumble, and Kueter are added to this weight. I hate to say this but I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t all American. He’s not going to beat the big three but could fall anywhere from 4- r12. I will guess slightly lower to 6 this year.
Overall this team is very beat up right now and needs to get healthy. I think the buckeyes finish anywhere from 2-5. Ohio state may need a high finish to show guys like Bassett that we can compete. Right now I say probably a 4th place finish. I wouldn’t be mad to pull Rocco’s redshirt at let him go at 184. There is a way Ohio state can finish 2nd but would probably need a deep run by mccrone, bouzakis, or paddy which I think is possible and also unleashing Rocco at 184.

Nice read, Nick.
The Geog injury is annoying. He was looking better and for him to keep progressing he needs mat time. Geog was a nice recruit but not a star. Expectations should reflect that.
Cannon must not believe he can beat D’Emilio. That or he thinks he has a better chance against Paddy.

If Cannon can beat Cody Chittum he needs to be in the lineup. It would be nice if he could get back down to 149, then if either DD or Paddy is injured he could step in. Is there any word out as to how long they expect Geog to be out?

In my opinion shirt Rogo to bulk up to 97 next year and wrestle Rocco at 84.

Rogotzke CANNOT redshirt this year, he has already wrestled attached. The 5 event limit only applies to true freshman.

Right now this is a light weight driven team. Much due to injury. I still have no idea what 174-184 will shake out but it feels like they need quite a bit of recovery time for the Big Ten schedule. Part of me wonders if they just are limiting Karchla’s mat time due to his injury history, or maybe he is still not ready. If OSU is still wrestling with a patchwork of guys like they are now they will be hard pressed to finish in the top 10, even with a champ.
As solid as McCrone has been I still don’t see an AA finish when you can’t generate your own offense. Opponents are already avoiding the mat and keeping things neutral. He is scramble dependent. The positive is that 125 is wide open which gives him a shot. Curious how a match with Lilladahl goes.
For the level of recruit that Bousakis was this is the year he needs to deliver. Three years in the room, and Davino waiting in the wings. He needs to get it done this year.
Hoping for a healthy holiday season for the Bucks. Starting the new year off with the Beavers from Oregon State should be a fun one.

Jared 125 is wide open. It is all going to depend on how the bracket sets up but right now I think he is a serious all American candidate. Wrestlestat uses computer analytics and has him as the 6 also. Last year he was 18-13 and this year he should be 14-1 ( should have beaten smith). He improved a lot throughout last season and came out strong at NCAAs only losing to Ramos 4-3 and beating Surtain 14-0. While you say people are learning to stay out of his positions, I think he is learning to get into his positions. His improvement has continued throughout this offseason. Lilladahl is my favorite to win it all I think this year. 125 could go a million different ways.
Bouzakis looks more controlled this year but his results are so bipolar who knows what to think. Last year he loses to Knox this year he wins 17-7. Last year he loses to raguson 15-6 this year wins 13-6. Last year tech falls Romney this year loses 6-5. I do think when he is on he can beat any single 133 pounder in the country but when he’s not he could lose to anyone in the top 20. I think he should be an all American by the way he’s wrestled so far.
As for Bouzakis and the lineup next year I don’t think he’s in any danger. The staff knows they need to utilize everyone and this is probably my best guess for next year.
125-mccrone
133-davino/bouzakis
141-davino/bouzakis
149-Mendez
157-cannon
165-Gallagher
174-Birden
184-welsh
197-Geog/rotogotzke
285-Feldman
174/ 197 maybe a transfer portal if necessary but this lineup should be the second best lineup in the country before portal season. Feldman, welsh, and Mendez may all be preseason NCAA favorites also. Davino could be an immediate title threat also. This will be a loaded squad just can’t compete with Penn state. Would love to get a guy like Facundo in portal as it looks like he will probably enter and could fill in anywhere from 157-174 but he probably is michigan bound I would guess.

Facundo is the type of guy Tom Ryan avoids in the portal - a veteran who isn’t likely to climb the rankings and contend for a national title. Facundo is darn good but he’s not a star.
Plus, Kharchla believe it or not has one year of eligibility remaining after this one, and although it’s been a while he owns a college win over Facundo.
Bucks are keeping their money for HS recruits and hitting the portal only for title contenders (Mesenbrink, Cardenas).

Jared, you say that McCrone’s opponents are avoiding the mat and taking neutral like it’s a bad thing. They aren’t getting their escape to start a period, so right there McCrone has a one-point advantage. In a big bout that’s huge.
Never a bad thing when opponents are willing to sacrifice a point to avoid your strength.
Plus, if McCrone wins a scramble there’s a good chance he’ll secure riding time. He’s that good on top.
I’d hate to wrestle him.

Drew I think Facundo can be a very high all American. He and Kasak are about dead even and Kasak is a title contender. It was said he beat Kasak in a wrestle off in the room also. He is 1-1 with Kharchla in college. This last summer in freestyle he beat Levi Haines 6-0 and had a very competitive match with Burroughs 5-3. I think he has a lot of upside. I am willing to bet he would all American this year.

I heard Askren talk about concept of a guy being close and almost 'there' in reference to Messenbrink. It's why he went to Cal Baptist instead of PSU right out the high school gate.
You've to be complete enough to compete for the prize of All American or NCAA champion. It is a function of having a complete enough game.
McCrone is complete enough to All American. He is complete enough to beat Caleb Smith. Referees make mistakes all the time. it is just really emotional and felt when we are attached to the outcome.
Lilledahl and PSU are a different beast. Lilledahl is going to score takedowns as his set ups are better than Caleb Smiths. PSU wins the set-up battle. I attribute Josh Barr's win over Michael Beard to being better prepared at ties and set ups.
Anyway, there are a handful of guys that I don't think McCrone beats this year as their game is too complete. That being said he has enough game to beat everyone else.

Also, McCrone wrestles like Mitch Clark, and Blake Kaplan. His starting point was somewhere between the two. So, I think he All Americans twice if he stays healthy.
Wrestlers still don't know how to wrestle effectively against the leg pass. This is an area of wrestling that doesn't get addressed in some rooms or guys simply don't have an understanding of what makes up good skill there. Anyways, it's largely still ripe for exploitation.

Watched McCrone v Spratley. Totally winnable.
He was crab rode for the rest of the first period after getting taken down. With a crab ride, you just need to get the guy to make one mistake and turn it into a bigger mistake.
Spratley chose neutral.
McCrone took top.
In the third, he locks up a cradle but proceeds with it wrong. He needed to adjust his leg 4 the other way; need to take that leg that is between his leg and put calf high on the thigh, let go of leg 4 and then use outside leg by pushing off toe and driving him and collapsing him to the mat. It works by taking away the third leg of his support. Compromising opponent's position is imminent.
I really like his unorthodox style. Just needs to get a little better at a couple of things. His approach to wrestling is consistent. He sticks largely to the things he knows which are not easy to decode for an opponent.

Pretty sure I saw on another forum that Kharchla would have another year of eligibility left he chose to take it. Not sure if true I am lost when it comes to how eligibility works these days. Probably not even spelling it right.
