Just dismantling good teams.
Oregon State: 36-3
Wyoming: 32-6
AZ State: 33-6
Oklahoma: 35-3
Virginia Tech: 34-9
Ran through the very tough field at CKLV.
Obviously it's early but my over reaction is this is the one program with the one coach with the one alumni base that can challenge Cael/PSU the next decade.

Oklahoma state is a team where a ton of points are coming out of the transfer portal. They also have 7 seniors in the lineup and not nearly the depth Ohio state has. Ohio state graduates only demilio and sasso and have backups that are just as good. Ohio state will be more of a threat over the next two years. Next year davino, bouzakis,Rocco, Feldman, Mendez could all be finalist type wrestlers. Then add in mccrone, paddy, cannon, Geog, Rotogotzke, kharchla.
Oklahoma state will get there but probably a few years away as his recruits are just now coming in next year. Spratley is the only big part returning. I honestly think it comes down to Forrest/ Bassett recruitment as the next to challenge. I believe Ohio State and Oklahoma State are the teams to beat for both. Bassett and Forrest are types of wrestlers who will get recruits to follow.

6 out of 10 {60%} of the starters for Ok. St. are transfers. Time will tell if Taylor is the next coming of Cael Sanderson. This is what NIL and transfer portal has done to college sports.

The transfer portal, by itself, was a good idea. Guys like the Decatur brothers weren't breaking the starting lineup and they transferred to other schools where they could start. The NIL has gotten out of hand. It's ironic that the NCAA went from 9.9 scholarship limit to a virtual money free for all with the NIL.

Taylor’s early success is largely but not entirely from transfers. But he’s also recruiting well out of high school. He’s off to a great start.
The Bucks notably are in on four blue chippers that Taylor also wants - Bassett, Forrest, Waters and Mocco.

They didn't hurt considering they won 4 of the 10 matches. All of them were close and without them who knows what happens.
D.T. has clearly energized their fanbase but without the transfer are they the #2 team in the country?
125 lost to #11
133 came out on top in a scramble for the pin not sure if he can replicate that.
141 was good and gotten better
149 ok not much has changed
157 transfer
165 transfer
174 transfer
184 was already very good but is 3rd best at this weight
197 ok and probably has improved with D.T.
285. Already a stud and probably finish top 3.
8200 fans in attendance last night.[/quote]
A few years out when this is D.T. team and his recruits is when we will really tell how good D.T. is. Will he get stud recruits and make them better like PSU or will he have to go the Iowa route and bring in transfers every year because they can't get multiple top end recruits.
For the record I think D.T. is going to be a very good coach.

Taylor can't help but be successful, but to call it coaching is a mistake. All he's done so far is buy at the top of the market. Any of us could produce a winning team with the moneybags he has at his disposal.
And yes, I hate NIL and the transfer auction that it has created.

Is attracting top talent not part of coaching in the modern era? Likely the most important. How about fund raising? Also critical.
Cael ain’t winning titles with poor talent that he somehow coached up.
Just seems so odd to refuse to give D.T. credit for their success this year.
Two things can be true:
1. OK State was successful in the portal (because of Taylor), which improved their team.
2. D.T. is killing it, the kids are wrestling well under his guidance, and he’s energized the program.

There's no question that he's acquired excellent talent. He's also doing an outstanding job. He is likely to be a magnet for top recruits and a rival to PSU in that regard.

Hamiti is leaps and bounds better this year than last year. The only difference is the change in location. I mean, look at Wisconsin. They are HORRID right now. No wonder Hamiti wanted out.

I have noticed over the past few years top Wisc. high school wrestlers have not gone to University. of Wisc, i.e. Keegan O'Toole 4x state champ, Messenbrink 3x, Mirasola brothers 3x & 4x, Scoles (Ill.)4x. I realize you can't get them all but it seems like an awful lot choose to go elsewhere. Even Ben Askren was from Wisc. but went to Missouri.

If and when tOSU starts to be successful in the portal, it’s going to be hard for you guys to retcon that you’ve been for it all along. The portal and NIL are the law of the land. Taylor is playing by the rules and deserve all the credit for what is happening at OSU.
If Coach Ryan wants to try to win with one hand tied behind his back, I guess that’s his prerogative. But, of course, that’s not what he’s doing. He wants guys from the portal, he just hasn’t gotten them yet. Ohio State is a top program, to stay that way, they’re going to have to use the portal and NIL just like all the other top programs do. And when they do, tOSU fans will welcome those athletes with open arms.
I do find it odd how much pushback there’s been against NIL and the portal. One gives money to young adults for their hard work, skills and potential. The other gives them choice to perform where they want. I just don’t see the downside for the wrestlers. What am I missing?

There is a lot in Michael’s post, some of which I agree with. I will simply make a personal observation: there has always been a few consistent favorites in college wrestling but that divide is growing and solidifying with NIL and the unrestricted portal.
I am not enjoying it as a fan like I used to. I’m glad there is some level of benefit given to these athletes but it is now a professional league for 4-5 schools and the rest are searching for scraps.
