Discussion Topic: OSU v. Rutgers - 1/12/25

My thoughts:
OSU v. Rutgers
125 – Brendan McCrone v. Dean Peterson. McCrone split with Peterson last year. I think McCrone has wrestled better this year, absent the Renteria match maybe, so I will give him a decision.
OSU 3 – RU 0
133 – Nic Bouzakis v. Dylan Shawver. This is an interesting matchup. Davino beat Bouzakis, Shawver beat Davino, so Shawver should be favored. However, I think Nic takes this one. This is a toss up and no result would really surprise me.
OSU 6 – RU 0
141 – Jesse Mendez v. Joey Olivieri. Jesse should pick up bonus here. He’s wrestling so well right now. I am calling for a major, but a tech or pin would not surprise me either.
OSU 10 – RU 0
149 – Dylan D’Emilio v. Andrew Clark. I think DD takes another close one, getting a 3rd period takedown to ice it.
OSU 13 – RU 0
157 – Paddy Gallagher v. Conne Harer. Paddy should win this and should be looking for bonus. I will say he wins by 6.
OSU 16 – RU 0
**At this point I have OSU with a clean sweep, however, it could easily be 3-2 Rutgers in terms of matches won. This is a dual full of close matches.**
165 – Sammy Sasso v. Anthony White. Sammy has 2 majors over White, but those are old Sammy. I think he grinds out a decision here.
OSU 19 – RU 0
174 – Carson Kharchla v. Jackson Turley. Carson has been really good since his return to the mat, and I think he pushes for bonus here. I will call this a 10-3 decision for now.
OSU 22 – RU 0
184 – Ryder Rogotzke v. Shane Cartagena-Walsh. I think Rogo puts SGW on his back at some point. Not sure if he gets the fall, but it’ll be enough to get the W.
OSU 25 – RU 0
197 – Seth Shumate v. John Poznanski. Poz is 1-0 v. Seth, and with Seth going back up to 197 after cutting to 184, I am going to say that he gets to 2-0.
OSU 25 – RU 3
285 – Nick Feldman v. Yaraslau Slavikouski. Nick is 1-0, and if he’s fully recovered from his injury, I think he makes it 2-0.
OSU 28 – RU 3
Overall, this match is crazy. It could end up an OSU blowout or a close match with either team winning. I think OSU has solid favorites at 141, 157 and 174, but every other match is a tossup. I think OSU wins enough to win the match overall, but it should be exciting!

I like that Shumate is hitting some big moves; they were nonexistent after high school until now. He is regaining some confidence. He is really good at those positions i.e. underhook, over/under tie, headlock.
Needs to develop a brutal defense, making the guy pay for taking a shot i.e. crushing an opponent with hips and wrestling from controlled ties and getting to bear hugs, headlocks, Russian. Anything that slows the pace down and creates positions of relative advantage.
Poz matchup is a great metric and opportunity to see how he measures up against higher quality opponent.

Agreed with all of that, Rex. Hoping Shumate can finish out the season as our starter, I like what i've been seeing. Would be a big blow to him and the team if he loses his spot to Geog this season (If he is healthy) and enters the portal.

I remember Shumate in HS being a guy who would go upper body and be successful, but seemed to abandon that part of his offense when coming to college. Plus having a teammate like Ryder, one would think, would be a great situation to be in, trading/honing techniques with each other.

InterMat reporting Sasso is down at 157 at the Franklin & Marshall Open this weekend.

Also Davino (133), Gonzales (141), Herman (157) and Welsh (184) will be there.

Complete speculation, but I wonder if travel and weather played a part. I don’t think they’ve ever held a Sunday dual this late before .
On the wrestling front I’ll be interested to see if Hepner is back in the lineup. Birden has to be getting close to the point where they either max out his match points or pull his redshirt. I see no reason why they wouldn’t roll out Hepner in Friday night if he was healthy. Either that or Birden is just better.

It's on Big Ten network, so I assume it's to accommodate TV.

You aren’t missing much. Zero action and tons of stalling
Good thing Basset is there to watch the most boring wrestling match of all time.
In 33-49-57-65 there has been a total of 2 TD.
A wins a win I guess but should not have been that close.

Took my 3 year old to watch his first live college wrestling tonight. What an uninspiring performance. Outside Mendes, I think the Bucks had 3 takedowns all night? Not against elite competition either.
To quote Jerry Maguire… “That is not what inspires people.”

I thought DD did a nice job in a close match, Sammy looked better at 157 than 165, strength wise he seems more suited to be at 157. Birden needs a year to mature, he never got any penetration on his leg shots, just reached a lot. I thought Carson did s nice job against a tough opponent. Except for the last 10 seconds Shumate did a good job, a lot more offense than we have seen from him in the past.

While 9 of 10 matches were decisions, it did not lack drama. I will credit Rutgers in that they showed up and really wrestled tough. I continue to reiterate that McCrone has had a great year, but without the ability to score off of leg attacks he will be minimized by top 15 guys. Pederson is an AA caliber guy, but that match was over midway through the first. Shawver is a dog. He just gets the job done when it matters. Bousakis is still a round of 12 type of guy right now. Dylan got the job done but had no answers for the head hands defense of his opponent. By and large I think our guys got beat in the hand fight all night. Unpopular opinion here, but is Sammy really our best option at 157? Why was he wrestling after competing in five matches on Friday? Birden looked like a deer in headlights. Not the same guy as Friday. Carson squeaks out a win over a funky opponent. Ryder is another dude with no real leg attacks to his name. He’s fun to watch, but I’m not sure how consistent he can be. Shumate should have won that match, two years ago with the takedown rules he’s up two takedowns to none, but with reaction time added back in he gets nothing, and has another late match mental lapse giving up a last second takedown. Good thing we have a great closer in Feldman. I think the big takeaway is just that nothing in the Big Ten is a given. Every match in every dual will be a scrap, and at the end of the day the Bucks walked away with the W.

Wonder if Paddy is going to move to 165.
I would like to see Vinny get a chance at 25.
They should let Welsh wrestle if he wants, it’s not like he doesn’t know Keck and Star are there.
