Tom Ryan is in his 19th season as head wrestling coach. He has led the program to unprecedented success but at some point he'll need to be replaced. I think the last few years have been particularly difficult with the sudden changes in recruitment due to NIL, etc...plus injuries suffered in the car accident as well as the awful incident with Sammy. The Bucks currently appear to be hanging in there but the college landscape is rapidly changing and staying among the best program's in the country is getting harder. Plus David Taylor's hire at Oklahoma State will make it more difficult to land the best recruits in the country.
My guess is that Tom Ryan is in the late autumn of his career.
So, when the time comes, who should replace him?
Should it be a member of the current staff? Do J, Logan or Bo have the ability to take over and keep the program among the best in the country? Can they fundraise (critical)? Do they have the charisma when it comes to recruiting?
Should it be a hot young coach...someone like Reece Humphrey who has Ohio State ties but lots of experience in other venues?
Or should the Bucks follow Oklahoma State's model and grab a great young talent from PSU? Kyle Snyder anyone? How about Kyle Dake? I don't think any serious program can ignore looking at PSU/PSU grads for coaching just as everyone used to hire people with Iowa ties in the past.
Lots to digest. Thoughts?

I would be curious if Casey Cunningham would be interested in big time school like Ohio State if the opportunity presented itself.

Cunningham would be a HUGE get. He's arguably as important to PSU as Cael. That said, JJ is likely next in line and not sure he would be much different than Ryan.

Has TR ever said anywhere how long he wants to coach? He's what, 55 years old?
He could go another 10 years if he still has the drive. I've seen no evidence that his passion is waning.
Point being, the guys that might make sense as a replacement 5 years from now are likely to be completely different than options we would think of today.

Why is that a dream?
Oklahoma State was strugging to be a top ten program over last several years. Smith "retires" and they go and get David Taylor. Instantly they're transformed and arguably the second best squad in the country.
Wouldn't Dake, Snyder, etc... see Ohio State as having similar potential?

Think you answered your own question if you were asking the question.

Last year I was talking with a former Ohio State wrestler who wrestled for Tom Ryan. I asked him who the next coach would be between Jaggers and Logan and while he didn't say which guy he thought it might be, he did mention that Tom Ryan wants to coach for another 10+ years. I will mention that this was before his awful car accident, so I guess that could change how he sees things.

LOL, I don't even know if Dake wants to be a Head Coach.
He could very well have other aspirations, but after seeing the bag $ Taylor got, it would be hard to not give strong consideration.
If he is leaning toward becoming a Coach someone is gonna snatch him up quick.

Wish List = Doug Schwab. If nothing else, I would love to see what he could do with the resources of a place like Ohio State.

No Taylor would not. He is being paid 1.1 million a year. Double Ryan’s salary and has unlimited nil funds. The only place Taylor would leave is for Penn state.

Outside the box choice and a great coach/human being. Does a lot with what he has.

Can't agree more; UNI is a very solid mid major program. Schwab has two sons, the oldest of which is a sophomore (I think). It wouldn't surprise me if he sticks around to coach them at UNI.

The question will be do you hire within or go outside. Many organizations, not just sports teams, tend to promote within. It demonstrates health of the organization by showing you can move up. Hiring managers like to hire people they’re comfortable with, and if they let former owners or bosses have a say they like to pass it off to someone they’re familiar with. Dad’s love to hand off their legacy to jr. More organizations have success looking outside at those with a fresh perspective. Oklahoma state is a great example. Coleman Scott was a no brainer for the Cowboy faithful. He was beloved, instead they reflected on the trajectory of the program and said is this the guy to get us there. Early returns suggest that the AD made the right call.
TR is the CEO of this program. J is the instructional/program driver IMO. Does he want to shift into that CEO role? That may not even be what he wants. My guess, Tom just signed a contract extension. I see him in his current role past 60. That puts J near 50 when that happens. Logan and BO at 40. All those other names Schwab, The PSU guys, etc will also be mid 50s. I don’t think the person we’re looking for is even a coach yet.
