I am interested in what you folk think now constitutes a successful recruit. I'm talking now where it looks we won't be in the hunt for the very best of recruits. Ten years ago some might have said a national championship. now maybe a four time qualifier or an All American finish at some point of career. just wondering what the new expectations are

I still think the standard is a guy who's an immediate top 8 caliber starter from the moment he hits the lineup.

Perhaps someone like DeEmilio who managed two AA finishes. We’re not going to ever have a lineup of ten Mendez types. But ten like Dylan should be possible, giving us 4-5 AA per season.

Back before Coach Ryan took over tOSU program, the administration and the fans were absolutely ok with a mediocre team that was good every few years. If you go back through the old threads on this site you’ll see the discussions about how Ohio is a great wrestling state and Ohio’s flagship university shouldn’t be satisfied with the teams they were fielding. Coach Ryan was brought on to fix that specific issue with the program…and he did a spectacular job.
I feel like I’m alone on this one, but I don’t understand why the dawn of the NIL era causes the Ohio State faithful to lower their expectations. If Penn State, Iowa and Oklahoma State can get top recruits, then so can Ohio State. If getting big NIL donors is the new challenge, then it’s the expectation of the coaching staff. If Coach Ryan and his staff can’t bring in athletes that can help his team compete for a title (and I’m not saying they can’t), then the administration needs to find a coach that can.
tOSU is an athletic factory. The expectations of the wrestling program at Ohio State should be no different than they are for the football team, period.
As far as the question, I think Ohio state can still pull great recruits. Point in case, Ben Divino. That’s an AA contender as a freshman that tOSU landed in the NIL era. They just need more of them. I don’t think they can match Penn State as long as Coach Sanderson is there, but they can be the same program in the NIL era that they were in the decade-plus before. Just my opinion, but I’m wrong a lot.

I believe it depends on the recruit ranking. If you are a top 10-15 recruit, I think to be successful, by the end of your career, you should be a multiple time AA.
If you are a top 30ish recruit, I think a 3-4 time qualifier, along with 1 AA or multiple R12 finishes, would be successful.
If you are a top 60ish recruit, I think multi-year starter, 2+ qualifications and challenging for an AA finish is successful.
If you are outside the top 100, again, multi-year starter with a +.500 record is successful.
If you are outside the top 100, being a solid practice partner, maybe getting a spot start here or there and not getting decked by anyone but the top of the weight, would be successful.
Every recruit should be judged by their individual ceiling and floor.

Thought my answer was on point. If you start for tOSU, you should be an AA caliber competitor. The Sam Sasso's and Jesse Mendez's are more difficult to land. But Bucks still need a few of those. Bucks have always been chasing PSU and Iowa. Now Okie State is part of the title mix. But otherwise, one hopes to see Bucks in the running for every recruit worth having that is available.
M-Rod pointed out that the Bucks raised expectations under Coach Ryan and that they can't just concede due to NIL. Nebraska isn't. Neither is Cornell. And I'm sure Tom Ryan is doing everything possible to continue to recruit every top candidate available. Bucks have sagged a bit in recent years. And the Sasso shooting and Welsh defection have made team excellence more difficult. But the standard is the standard as Mike Tomlin likes to say. I'm spoiled and want the Bucks to climb back up into the group of teams that's battling yearly for a trophy.
Bo Bassett anyone?

I guess I might have a slight different take.
The question I would ask is, are we talking about a successful recruit for the school or for themselves?
If it is for the school, at least at the highest level, all of you have valid points.
If we are talking about the student, getting through 4 (or 5) years of college wrestling could be considered as very successful. After all, how many guys are able to do it?
It just depends on how we view the question.

Hank: that recruit could actually be three recruits. Bo, brother Keegan, & Melvin Miller.

Based on stuff Tom Ryan put on FB, it seems as if he's still after them.

He didn’t make Melvin miller or Bo’s list. They are a three way package. Oklahoma state , Penn state or Nebraska.

Ohio State has neither a significant NIL fund nor a quality RTC, two Bassett priorities. Forget it.

I think you always try but without a sugardaddy— or daddies — we aren’t going to get who we used to get.
Jesse Mendez’ comments about why he is staying at TOSU will make him a Buckeye legend. It would not surprise me if he was offered $1+ mil by another school for one year.
Anyone know what Ferrari got, if anything, from Nebraska after reports of 1 mil from NC? I looked but didn’t see anything.

One of the big knocks on Russ was that a lot of the elite Ohio kids (particularly NE Ohio) left the state to wrestle at Michigan, Iowa etc. When Tom Ryan came in he made it a priority to keep the Ohio kids home. He did this by first hiring Tommy back as an assistant as well as bringing in NE Ohio Legend Joe Heskett, and elite lightweight coach Lou Rosseelli (PA guy). Jaggers committed to dropping back down to 141 to make room for incoming Lance Palmer (who I believe initially committed when Russ was still coach). He brought Pucillo with him from Hofstra and went and got Dave Rella. He subsequently went and got big NE recruits in Johnstone (who had a win over Dustin Schlatter his senior year) and Nemec (further establishing the pipeline from St.Eds). Next he established a relationship with Jeff Jordan which obviously became a big factor in their success. Think about how many of the AA and elite wrestlers since that time have come from the NE Ohio pipeline? I think Ohio has had some down years (relatively speaking) with regard to elite talent in the last several years (with Blaze being a notable exception) however we seem to be back on an upswing. Weber, Burnett, Boyle, Rowlands and others seem to be establishing themselves on the national scene and maybe they represent the next wave of elite Ohio recruits?
