Shumate and Geog have both disappointed this year. Luckily for us Massoma Endene just entered portal. If Tom wants a real shot at NCAAs pick him up. All other top contenders don’t need a 197 like the buckeyes. Would Tom actually make this move? Doubt it but a perfect fit.

No.

Committed to Wisky. Backed out and went for year 3 at Warburg.

Committed to Iowa and separated from the team for mysterious reasons (I’ve seen rumors but nothing concrete so I’m not inclined to repeat them).

Too much risk. TR will ride with his boys.

He’s taking a medical this year it looks like. Will be coming back next year. He would be a good option if our 197 don’t produce at NCAAs and would allow a redshirt for Waters.

Massoma had a lot going on from what I heard. Had a kid recently also. Brands tried to rush him back from injury and he didn’t feel comfortable doing so. Brands then got upset and cut him from team to save NIL.

To me it feels like more of a Brands issue. Brands also kicked off Gabe Arnold from team and then let him rejoin. Also should have secured Bassett brothers and Melvin miller but blew that also. If I were Iowa it’s time to move on. Bob nicholl keeps buying wrestlers to save his job

Next year Buckeyes will have Geog, Shumate and Rogotzke as options for 197.

I think the coaching staff needs to focus putting $ toward a 141 and 149 next year. I think 1 of those 3 will emerge as the starter next year at 197.

Waters is also coming in for 197. It would not surprise me if he was the starter. If geog/Shumate can’t make a run at NCAAs it may be time to look at portal. One year guy would only make sense as Waters looks to be the future. Can’t carry four 197 on the roster so I’m guessing Shumate and rotogotzke are probably gone as they can start elsewhere.

What we need is at least a backup heavyweight. We have no one on roster to give Feldman a rest. Boyle will probably need a redshirt so need a gap filler.

141 is not an area of need. I believe Davino will move up. 141 may be one of the weakest weights while 133 will be toughest. Mills/mccrone/bouzakis/munaretto will wrestle 125/133. 141 clears out a lot.

Cannon and stile probably both move up to full 157 and 165. 149 the plan was for Shaw but he hasn’t looked the greatest so far this year. 149 and 174 are probably the biggest priorities. Birden moves up to 174. Shaw and Birden can be top 25 guys but probably not threat to AA. If you aren’t an all American you aren’t scoring many points at national. That’s where huh need to upgrade.

I think Davino is the perfect fit for 133. I don't see him moving up.

I'd like to see Bouzakis move up to 141 next year- For team purposes. I hope Birden isn't an undersized 174 but i'd like to see him start next year.

Next Year's Lineup(just conjecture)

125: McCrone and/or Kilkeary
133: Bouzakis
141: Davino
149: Stiles
157: Maddox
165: Cannon
174: Birden
184: Fishbach
197: Geog (Rogotzke and Shumate)
285: Feldman

Redshirt all incoming frosh. If Bouzakis can make the cut again, you move up McCrone. Wouldn't shock me if Kilkeary transfers out. Same for Rogotzke.

I think provided he continues to do well and finishes as a high AA that Bouzakis stays at 125. He's 24 years old and done growing. If he can make it this year he'll make it next. Davino is not a particularly big 133 and he is doing great their. If it aint broke don't fix it. No need to blow up the whole lineup to fill a perceived hole. Go get someone from the portal or recruit someone to come in (Brown from St. Ed would have been a good fit). Out of the lower weight recruits coming in Mills has the biggest frame. I think he will be at least a 133 possibly a 141 in college but probably won't be ready next year.

To circle back to the original post question, no you do not go after the portal guy. In theory you have three round of 12 guys vying for one spot and the top 197 prospect in the country coming in. Thats a lot of scholly money and likely some NIL with Waters tied up. I also think we need to remember that Ebdeme (sp), while wrestling well, wasn’t exactly dominating guys. He beat Shumate early in the year and won matches on some last minute takedowns. Honestly, Geog has been wrestling better this year now that he is healthy. While small, with the right draw, I could see him speaking into a low All American placement. Bottom line, no. There’s not an enough of a return on investment.
Side note, Davino is a smaller 133. I don’t see 141 in the cards next year. My best guess is that someone like King fills in for a year.

125: Bousakis/McCrone
133: Davino
141: King
149: Shaw
157: Stiles (he cuts a ton, and started at 157 for Oregon State)
165: Birden
174: ??
184: Fishback
197: Geog/Rygotske
285: Feldman

One thing I will say about Geog, he doesn't seem as gassed as he used to get later in the matches. He still needs to work on getting off bottom, but he has improved.

Mills is the top 126 pounder in the nation in high school. You wrestle him if he’s the best man at whatever weight. Look at guys like chris cannon and Dylan ragusin who are not even close the wrestlers they used to be at the beginning of their careers. Best man wrestles.

People think Davino shouldn’t and wouldn’t go 141. Not sure why

133 return blaze, Forrest, Larkin, Seidel, Zugitt, frost

141 returns Vega (1-1 career against) stanich, Bailey, Davis/nagao

I’m taking option B and it helps team

Wrestle mills/bouzakis 125/133

Pretty obvious Stiles is making a huge cut. He's gassed hard his last few matches. Not mad at him. He's excellent and fun to watch.

In hindsight, maybe they could have put Maddox at 149 and Stiles at 157 til Cannon comes back.

Maddox Shaw has only one date remaining. They may be saving it for tomorrow even

1. Clarion open
2. Kent State dual
3.Wyoming dual
4.Nebraska dual.

He wrestled a few tournies 2nd semester unattached so I believe saving him
