"I see today InterMat is reporting that Pat Walsh of prep school Wyoming Seminary PA, has Verballed to Ohio St U. Walsh is a 285, a 5th year senior, he won National Preps this season with 4 pins and a 8-1 decison. Last summer Walsh took 7th in Fargo at 215 in Jr FR.
Walsh is not a big 285 at about 6 ft and 235, but he is a talented one my sources over there tell me. And a good kid too I am told. Probably a pretty good student too, since the prep schools enforce discipline and academics."

Nice pickup for the Buckeyes. Gotta like the fact this kid is a former New England champ as well. I'm amazed at the kids that Ohio State has been able to sign since finishing second in the nation. Kids like Garrett Henry(Ohio State Champ), Caleb Messerall (3rd at Srs), Jared Kusar (3x placer) and Pat Walsh(prep champ and Fargo placer) have been added to a recruiting class that already included Jameson, Magrum, Thompson, Finnicum and Hiles. Looks to me like Ohio State has added a lot of depth to their roster as well as guys that will contribute in time. Ohio State is starting to remind me of Iowa and Oklahoma State in that they're building a second layer of talent to increase the competition in the room.

From a Massachusetts forum: "Go with the school where you can accomplish your goals as a student athlete. Get a feel for the coaches, if you feel like you can talk to them about everything and anything...that’s a good sign. Luckily I found
all this and more
at Ohio State….thanks to everyone who has helped me reach my goals so far".
It won't hurt Walsh to have Tommy Rowlands or Ross Thatcher as a coach/workout partner either.

My sense of Walsh is that he's a bit undersized but has the motor, athleticism and technique that the staff likes. Plus, I'm betting he's an excellent student which is a positive. I'm impressed by how he dominated the preps and placed at Fargo.
Bucks now have Morrison, Hiles, Campbell, DiAgosta, Stolarsky and Walsh to compete at 285. Perhaps Zach Weinrich as well. The competition alone ought to produce a solid starter.

slightly Off topic, but the size of Walsh screams for the NCAA to add another weight class between 197 and 285.

Excellent point but the only way it's likely to happen is by weeding out one of the middlewts. There are already too few of those. My reasoning is that I don't think they want more than ten weight classes.
I think that rather than see some absurd change in the weight classes, the smart move would be to change 197 to 220 and change 285 to 300. While the gap between 184 and 220 would be significant, most current 197's could easily compete at 220.

Or start the weight shift earlier so the jump between the third to last weight and the second to last weight is not so great. The effect of 8 pounds between 125 and 133 is not the same as 8 pounds between 157 and 165 because the percentage of bodyweight difference is so much different.
I do like the idea of heavy going up to 300 and having a weight somewhere between 215 and 240. Unlike when I was in high school there are plenty of guys that could roll (no pun intended) at around 300 and be in shape compared to some of the weight fillers in the 1980s. Kids today are just plain bigger. You still don't risk another Chris Taylor at 300.

Going above the ten weight classes is not going to happen. Between scholarship constraints, and the NCAA mandated 330 participant limit at the championships, it makes no sense.
In terms of Pat Walsh, it's always good for a collegiate program to get capable kids that can compete at 285. Good 285's are tough to find - many are playing football - and you can't just create them from "thin air" (i.e. if your starter at 285 is injured, and you don't have another in reserve, sliding up your 197 not as easy as it would be going 141 to 149 for example).
Ohio State has done a good job in this class getting what I'll call "tier two" and/or "depth" recruits. Henry for the lowers, Messerall for the lower-middle, Kusar for the middle, Finnicum in the middle-upper, and Walsh up top. This is what the late period is about (with selective exceptions) - identifying those kids that can come in and make valuable contributions to the program in multiple fashions.

based on what a couple coaches over there tell me, i am a bit more optimistic about Pat Walsh' ability to help the buckeyes, not necessarily this coming season but soon.
I am told he is quite talented, and he is a year older being a 5th year senior (they call them PG's, post grads) at Wyoming Seminary Prep. Post grads are common at prep schools where they stick around to mature and improve their academics.
but as usual in college the intangibles of discipline, toughness, dedication, focus, work ethic, goals, and attitude matter so much.

btw, there's probably more Ohio St signings coming soon-- not just for back up either-- there's movement in college wrestling every offseason, key is to find one or 2 that can truly help you and that really WANT to be successful elsewhere.
Ohio St NOT done yet, imo, although my crystal ball is not nearly 100 % accurate, i do have a feeling and some info -- -- -- -- --. Could even be another 285, too. Stay tuned.

Bob: There's been some noise about Darrion Caldwell wanting to leave NC State. One poster on themat.com said he's interested in Ohio State or Nebraska. Can you comment?

Hank,
havent heard Caldwell's name associated with Ohio St--- he is very exciting wrestler though-- i saw him pin NCAA champ Metcalf this season, in a standing spladle, Metcalf only loss. Caldwell gave Ryan Lang a super match at NCAAs last year. Quite an athlete.
btw, i saw Nemec beat Caldwell among many other big names 2 years ago in Fargo, fans should look forward to Nemec emerging next season for Ohio St.

It don't know how much sense it would make for Caldwell to go to Nebraska or Ohio State considering that two other All Americans from his weight are already there (Burroughs and Palmer).
