Discussion Topic: 2007 National #1 Cody Gardner is a Buckeye!
Dan Cosimi added to this discussion on May 25, 2008

Cody Gardner, the nation's top-ranked 215 pounder in 2007, will wrestle at The Ohio State University for the 2008-2009 season. Gardner redshirted at Virginia Tech during the 2007-2008 season. He was a 2007 graduate from Christiansburg High School in Virginia, where he amassed a 183-6 high school record including 136 pins. He was a four-time Virginia state champion and a two-time Ironman champion. He also won the USAW Junior National Freestyle Championship and held a unanimous #1 ranking at the 215 pound weight class throughout his senior year.

Several weeks ago the Buckeye staff collectively took a 45 minute nap. Before that and since then, I don't think they've slept. Another awesome pick-up! Welcome aboard, Cody.

Gardner could be 285-- he weighs 215 now, is 6 ft, 3 1/2 inches tall--- or he could be a 197 i understand.

any way u look at it, its turned out to be a BIG spring for Ohio St U-- their November signings did not indicate a real good class primarly since they didnt get a top 174 ---but this spring has changed that.

usually a school doesnt do this well in the spring, but theres been movment and Ohio st has benefitted: specifically 174 to-be Rella and now Gardner. Assuming both Rella & Gardner are admitted to Ohio St U, its now a real good class perhaps .

Bob: It may not be a top five class nationally, but it's a great class for the Buckeyes. It addresses a huge hole at 174, adds a bunch of talent to the once thin upperweights, and adds general depth throughout the lineup. This class should be the first one in a while that will have the luxury of developing over time as the Jamesons, Magrums, et. al. will not need to be rushed into the lineup. That improves the team in the long run.

Bucks lineup next season certainly compares with the squad that took second at National Duals. And the depth is greater than I've ever seen in Columbus.

125: Triggas, Touris, Zamaria, Henry
133: Humphrey, Livingston, Thompson
141: Jaggers, Livingston, Jameson, Messerall
149: Palmer, Jameson, Kusar
157: Johnstone, Nemec, Kusar
165: Sponseller, Campbell
174: Rella, Magrum, Finnicum
184: Pucillo, W. Bergman, Magrum
197: Weakley, Gardner, Walsh
285: Morrison, Gardner, Hiles, DiAgosta

I'm leaving a number of guys off this list that are probably much better than I realize. Certainly, the competition and depth in the room have never been better. And we all recognize that there are a couple big name Ohio seniors that are being recruited. If they come, it just gets better.

Scott: My memory doesn't stretch the way it used to. I also didn't mention Zack Weinrich at 197/285. Nor Jason Cook (197), Jeremy Sanders (174-84), Ross Ambrose (165), and others on the current roster such as: Eric DiAgosta, Brendan Beucler, Owen Schaefer, Zach Stolarsky, Jon Savia, Dominic Mehling, Tyler Meek, Jacob Hale.

Brian, if Gardner can get down to 197, I wouldn't mind seeing Weakley redshirt next year to give him extra time to develop.

When does 'enough' become 'too much'? I understand there is a lot of attrition in wrestling, but don't want to see any negativity around the program due to unfulfilled promises made, etc. I would expect to see a number of transfers after 1-2 years in the program for kids who realize they are not going to be able to start at OSU.

The other point I'd like to make is that I'd love to see the scholarship breakdown - obviously, there are a number of quality guys on this squad that are paying their own way, that could get some $$ from other schools.

Exciting and interesting times in the room at OSU these days! :)

JP: Very interesting post. Certainly, we've seen guys leave other programs from time to time because they became disenchanted with their situations. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened there if Garrett Scott had not self destructed at 141. If that had been the case, would Frank Molinaro have sat for a few more years?

Still, on the spectrum of "problems to have", too much talent is better than too little.

This was written back in Dec., so take it for what its worth.
