Haven’t you guys been saying he doesn’t have the resources to bring in top level portal guys? Which is it?

"David Taylor was headed on a plane this morning to try and get Rocco Welsh. He was on a plane to get the Campbell heavy that committed to Michigan also per Pat Mineo. Swiderski and Facundo I’m sure were probably a priority for him also. And I’m sure did the same. Point being is that David Taylor was super aggressive trying to get these guys immediately while Tom Ryan is taking time away when it’s a pivotal part of the season in todays day and age."

I know what your point is and my point is that you need to spend less time on forums and let the people who get paid to get results do it in the way they believe works best for them.
When OSU hires any of us to coach, then it is our concern. Until then, not so much."

Isn't that the point of forums like this? So fans can discuss the program. Maybe take your own advice and spend less time on forums if you don't like the content.

Technically OSU got an All American heavy out of Utah Valley a few years ago. I would say they are selective, which I think is fair to scrutinize. Id really like to see some data on guys leaving via the portal that reach AA status, or titles. This year seems to be open season on transfers. Usually it’s small to big programs. Now schools like ISU, OSU, and others losing starters. Let’s not forget roster caps are now going to be a thing. All the guys, outside of welsh are not leaving for greener pastures, they are leaving because they will never start at Ohio State. The staff has repeatedly discussed the importance of open and transparent communication with their athletes. Outside of welsh, I have to assume that all these guys leading (outside of Rocco) were understood.

"Ohio state has got zero transfer portal kids in years. Toms way of doing thing does not work is the point once again. Name another top 10 program that hasn’t got at least a few portal kids. Its unacceptable for being one of the highest paid coaches in the country with resources and facilities that he has."

Agreed.
I like Tom Ryan for the most part (minus the brick throwing), but unfortunately he isn't getting with the times. Even Dan Gable himself recognized this when he stepped down in 1997. Royce Alger once explained in an interview how a parent of one of Gable's athletes basically tried to tell Gable himself whether or not his son was/wasn't going to wrestle in an event. Gable was probably in shock that a parent would try to intervene like that, and he got the sense that was how parents/kids of the next generation were going to be, and that was part of what led him to make his decision to step down.
For the record, I wish things weren't the way they were with the portal and NIL, and I don't envy the position that any coach is in. I wish Tom Ryan didn't have to change with the times, but it doesn't look there's much stopping it at this point.

Mike there are plenty of guys that Ohio state could have got. Barraclough went to Utah valley. He was an immediate all American. Asky went to Minnesota. Those guys were very available to Ohio state. Ohio state has the resources to get a lot of guys. Also McLain from unc I believe is ineligible to get nil because he is from Canada. They will not get the absolute hammers but there are plenty of opportunities to better the lineup out there.
Tate was not given any nil so that’s a different story.
Last time Geog and Shumate wrestled I believe Geog won 6-0. If Geog is leaving it’s not because he’s scared of Shumate.
Generally, international student-athletes on F-1 visas are restricted from participating in NIL deals in the U.S. due to visa regulations limiting work authorization, but they can pursue NIL opportunities in their home countries. Good news is we can get McNeil for absolutely zero. He has Mendez as a partner and Coleman Scott is the guy who originally recruited him. This one can’t lose out on.

Didn’t Barraclough move back to where he grew up? I’m not sure it’s all about money. Same with Welsh. He’s a PA kid and the best team in the country has a “hole” at his weight class. Why wouldn’t you go?

So you can voice your opinion but I can't voice mine?
Got it, my last post on this. I will wait to see when Ryan and Co take advice from a forum (but I won't be holding my breath).

"Tarvel?"

That's my choice. I thought it was a disaster for the program when he left.
My question is, who coaches the heavyweights since he left?

I only mentioned Tarvel because someone asked who was the last heavyweight that moved on to coaching? I think he’s a talented wrestler and coach and any program would be happy to have him. It’s also possible that he doesn’t have head coaching aspirations. Some people are great assistants but would be shitty head coaches. I myself fall into that category.

"I listened to FLO FRL after the Campbell 285 committed/transferred to Michigan.
They lauded Campbell for being progressive in allowing (almost helping) the kid transfer. Said it was the sign of a good program and it could help them on the recruiting trail.
I was in shock. This is what we've come to? After the top 6-10 programs, everyone else should help kids develop then transfer? And FLO, the premiere wrestling media outlet, approves and promotes this? Embarrassing."
|
I think Campbell is a little different with the school cutting all their scollys.

Tervel would be a dynamite HC. I believe he moved back to Neb to be closer to family (wife's if I remember correctly and he did go to college there).
JB talks about how Tervel is one of the best mental coaches on the planet and one he goes to. I know Kaleb loved Tervel. Who wouldn't.
Think on this -- Kyle Snyder has never performed up to the same level as he did when Tervel was in his corner.
ie. Welsh -- when you post "Ohio State is home. Go Bucks on Dec 18 then leave March 27th, that's not a good look, IMHO, on him. We love to blame coaches, etc. but you see more and more guys talking about the opposite. Many at first sign of problems, bolt. As I posted before, it'd be exhausting coaching primas.
Does this mean there may not be issues in the program? Nope. But to me, it seems pretty obvious that RS to let 184 clear out of CS, PK, and DP was a good plan. RW was mad and left.
On social media, it's laughable when PSU fans say they don't pay their wrestlers (after CS was reported to have gotten 1.3 mil for this season). Yes, the training environment is better than anywhere else - maybe on the planet (though OkSt looks pretty flipping awesome right now) but those dudes aren't making $0 either.

It still amazes me that people believe Rocco was forced to redshirt based on some unknown source who is probably something like his sister's boyfriend's cousin. Or from coach Ryan himself.
Since we're allowed to throw out theories, here's mine. Rocco was pissed he wasn't "given" the spot and had to compete for it throughout the year. And maybe he wasn't beating Carson or Ryder in the room. Or maybe his personality clashed with the coaches and other wrestlers and he didn't feel comfortable anymore. Or maybe his girlfriend dumped him and he wanted to get away.
For those of you that choose not to believe coach Ryan's explanation, then it doesn't matter what he does or doesn't do, you'll never trust him to do what you think should be done.

He WAS forced to redshirt and wasn't given the opportunity to wrestle off. It's not a theory and it's a significant issue if this team is expected to develop into a title contender.
