As much as I dislike the current status of the portal, I can't blame any kid for taking 1/2 million to transfer. Give me that money and I'm changing schools in a heartbeat -- especially if I'm getting peanuts where I'm currently at.

Their window to make that $ in wrestling is VERY short.

I certainly don’t blame the athlete taking the big money. I don’t really know what I would do if I received a scholarship at my dream school but someone offered me $500,000 to transfer somewhere. But at that age, that type of money doesn’t go as far as it used to.

The real issue to me is Iowa isn’t what it used to be anymore but its fans have the same fervor to be number 1. I have great respect for what the Brands did as wrestlers but it hasn’t quite translated like Gable or Cael. They are trying to buy titles rather than earn them.

If I needed a coach, and for the sake of argument you couldn’t choose Cael, the Brands probably wouldn’t be in my top three. It always looks to me like time has passed them by.

Uhhhhh that's still a pretty significant windfall for a youngster--or most Americans period. That's a life changing amount for an intelligent 20 year old.

Suppose after taxes, that $500k is $275k take home. Now suppose they do nothing with that but invest it and watch it compound... Using today's 30 year treasury yield of 4.126%, that's worth $1.75M when they turn 65.

Assuming a couple other rates of return:
5% - $2.60M at age 65
7% - $6.36M at age 65

That's a lot of brisket dinners in retirement.

Glazier is really good and with the right coaching; could've been an All American. I think Iowa failed him and bet that he will AA at SDSU. I think he has every reason to have a chip on his shoulder and hopefully with big man specific coaching at SDSU, he gets it done. He just needs to add a couple of wrinkles to his game as he was predictable. It would be poetic justice if he beats Buchanon at NCAAs. Fingers crossed.

Agree with you there. Last year was Glazier's first full year of competition (despite his age). He wilted a bit at the end like we see freshmen do every year. Not surprising.

Devos-Berge-Glazier from 174 to 197 is formidable.

I'd argue precisely the opposite.

It's far more valuable to earn $500,000 in your early 20's vs. earning it later in life.

You guys are right. If you don’t have a family, go on trips, use gas, buy food, it will go a long way.

My point is it’s not a lifetime set up. If you get a good degree and job with no serous life setbacks, it would be great to do that.

You're not wrong, we're just sort of talking apples and oranges. $500,000 is NOT what is used to be, of course. Cumulative inflation since 2019 is north of 25%, and I'd argue it's worse than that for the average consumer.

Earning that kind of money while in college definitely doesn't make you "set for life." My only point is that if handled correctly, it would give you a massive head start. Even top 1% earners coming out of college would typically take a few years to amass $200k in long-term investments. The average 30 year old in this country has less than $20k saved.

With absolutely nothing to back it up, I would bet that the "average" person under 30 has a LOT less than $20K saved.

Um....a huge percentage of this country owes more than they're worth.

I was watching a lot of college FB over the weekend and it was packed with announcers saying this guy and that guy transferred from so and so school, including plenty of Buckeyes. This is a new era in college sports/recruitng, time will tell if it is good or bad for sports.

I see where Chris Cannon is back at Northwestern after transferring to Mich. last year. I give NW coaches credit for taking back a guy who left them, got injured I believe, and went back into the transfer portal where it appears no one but NW wanted him. NW had to be disappointed last season to lose DeAugustino, Cannon and Davison in the portal.

Not really a transfer but Gable Stevenson is back for his final season.
