Ohio Samsons 25, Ohio Dragons 21
- Congratulations to the Samsons! Winning the Disney Duals is awesome!
103: Ty Mitch (Dragons) dec. Kory Mines (Samsons) 3-1
- Mitch got revenge for a surprising in-season dual meet loss. Both wrestlers are very good, and huge 103 pounders. If either of them make 103 again as juniors they will be significant favorites to win a state title, but both would have to defeat youth superstars. Mitch would have to defeat Isaac Jordan from Graham (of the Jordan family with 11 state titles), while Mines would have to defeat Kagan Squire from Wadsworth, brother of state champion Brad Squire, and we all know what happened his freshman year.
112: James Ingrham (Samsons) dec. John Worthington (Dragons) 3-0
- We may have an ultra-loaded weight class at 112 pounds in Division 2 next year with Ingrham, Westfall, DiJulius, Mitch, Minnard, Strausbaugh, Worthington, etc. all vying for a state title. Worthington going 3-0 with Ingrham is impressive. This is just about how it would have been predicted "on paper," although I could have seen Ingrham with a bit bigger of a win margin. Worthington went 46-3 this year, with his only losses being to 2x state placer Minnard 4-0, state 4th place Strausbaugh in overtime, and 2007 state 5th placer Young also in overtime, so you know he's the real deal. Ingrham of course was a state finalist in 2007 at 103 losing only to superstar David Taylor, and third this year at 112, again behind Taylor.
119: Troy Opfer (Samsons) pin Justin Cattran (Dragons) 2:20
- It's nice to see Cattran get an opportunity like this, but it's a complete mismatch. Opfer has placed in the top 3 at the state tournament four times (2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd) including this year at 125 pounds, while Cattran won one district bout at 112 pounds after finishing fourth at his sectional.
125: Cam Tessari (Dragons) dec. Garrett Henry (Samsons) 3-1
- No surprise here. I thought the margin would be more in Tessari's favor, though beating a state champion is a great win by any margin. My guess is there was a lot of riding time in this match.
130: Scott Meyer (Samsons) dec. Jake Vaughan (Dragons) 4-3
- This did surprise me. I guess it shouldn't have, given the fact that Meyer finished in 4th place at the state tournament while Vaughan didn't place at the same weight class, but I thought that was just a bad weekend for Vaughan (based on his excellent showings almost everywhere else). For Vaughan to win that elusive state title, he'll have to be more consistent. Nice win for Meyer here.
135: Harrison Hightower (Samsons) dec. Garland McCormick (Dragons) 3-2
- Hightower, a small favorite, won a battle of two very good, young wrestlers. Both are sophomores. Hightower was a state champion in Divisino 2 while McCormick qualified in a Division 1 class that was just loaded at the top, especially from his district.
140: David Habat (Dragons) dec. Richie Spicel (Samsons) 3-1
- It doesn't surprise me that Habat won because he's incredibly talented. Spicel hasn't lost in so long, he was bound to have a close call go the other way sometime. Both are elite wrestlers. This was a very good win for Habat and, by contrast, not a bad loss for Spicel. Unfortunately someone has to lose when titans battle.
145: Will Sheppard (Dragons) dec. Drew Schafer (Samsons) 8-5
- Sheppard is a stud. He went into double overtime with Spicel, went 2-2 against Lang, and defeated Messerall. I'd say this is a good bout for both Sheppard and Schafer, with the favorite Sheppard taking a good bout from a very tough fellow senior Schafer.
152: Coby Boyd (Dragons) dec. Kirk Tank (Samsons) 6-2
- This is basically how most people thought the state championship bout would go. Tank pulled off the big upset once but it wasn't going going to happen again. Boyd and Tank both should do well in the Big 10.
160: Eric Cubberly (Samsons) md. Chris Canty (Dragons) 10-0
- Cubberly was, in my opinion, one of the elite of the elite seniors in Ohio and in the nation. I would take him on my team any day. Canty is solid, but a one-time state placer versus a national-level champion is a mismatch.
171: Keith Witt (Samsons) dec. Nick Mills (Dragons) 3-2
- These are two very tough wrestlers who are very close in ability. Witt was a slight favorite as the state champ, but Mills was third, both defeating nationally-ranked Zac Thomusseit. Witt is a senior. Mills is entering his senior year and should be one of Ohio's best at any weight.
189: Cody Magrum (Samsons) dec. Cody Lamberg (Dragons) 8-5
- No surprise here. I might've guessed that the margin would be a bit more in favor of Magrum, but Lamberg is very tough and has a lot of upside. He wasn't a big 189 yet and he was only a sophomore.
215: Orlando Scales (Dragons) dec. Adam Cogar (Samsons) 5-1
- I thought this would be a one score bout like it was for the state title. As a side note, apparently Cogar was already injured or got injured here, and that may have effected the outcome.
285: Adam Walls (Dragons) dec. John Hiles (Samsons) 7-6
- This was a surprise. Walls defeated Hiles at state on what I thought was a poor call by the official that "gave" Walls the match. I thought based on just wrestling, that Hiles would control Walls. Walls proved here that I was incorrect. Very nice win by Walls. This and his revenge win over Meder puts him as the clear #1 heavyweight in the state going into next year. Hiles is far from done, though. He could end up being a very good recruit for the Buckeyes.

Other notable matches not mentioned on here that some may be suprised by:
130 Fayette dec. Vaughn 3-0
135: Genetin fall McCormik 1:43 -- I think if he was healthy he wins a state title @ 125 this past season.
145: Sheppard dec McGookey 11-9 OT -- this match was a barn burner with McGookey getting a TD in the closing seconds to send it to OT. Both seemed to be fatigued
189: Bowers dec Lamberg 5-3--- used two solid takedowns to set the pace of the match.
215: Scales fall Houska 5:12--- Scales controlled early part of match. Houska puts Scales on back. Score 6-4 Houska and he is in on a shot and get thrown for the fall.
285: Walls dec Meder 5-3 OT--- Meder gets escape and TD in 2nd period. Walls gets an escape and in a low single on Meder. Meder turns and kicks and goes to edge of mat- Walls hanging on. Meder faces him and posts on his head and waits for the 7 seconds to run out. Meder called for fleeing the mat after time runs out (they never left the circle). Walls escapes in third. Walls nice TD in OT.
Walls match with Meder very close. Should be a nice potential finals match next year with the rumors of Walls transferring to Beavercreek. Also throw Johnson, Buzzelli, Baker, etc in the mix.
I would not put a
"TON"
of stock in the results of matches from the Disney Duals. It is a nice trip and you get to see some great competition. But compared to the in season events it is a grind and there is not as much rest between the four days of matches. You are seeing state and national caliber opponents for around 11-12 matches over the course of four days where as the tournaments in season you are not seeing that level match in and match out (minus maybe Ironman/ Brecksville over the course of two days).
Also you have some kids training regularly for this event and others in the Spring/ Summer and those who take it a little more casual (open mats here and there). either way it should make those who participate a step above the others next season.

Jerry:
Any time you want to come up to the Kirtland wrestling room you are more than welcome and we'll surely keep Valley Forge on our short list of places to train. Meder is excellent and gave Stocum a great partner at Mentor. I will be rooting for him to win the state title.
