Discussion Topic: 2008 USA Olympic Greco-Roman Updates

I agree make it one or the other not both.

Byers and Wheeler move onto the quarterfinals. Vering loses in the 1/8 round. USA just not having a great tournament thus far with 0 medals and only two in the hunt for possible gold.

The US turns in a dismal performance with just one medal. Adam Wheeler got a bronze. Byers loses to a Sweed in the quarterfinals and Vering loses in the round of 16. I hope freestyle does better because right now the US is just looking awful.

US Wrestlers (maybe) should adopt more Russian styles and traning methods. What do you think?

I don't think changing over to Russian styles would help a bit. With FILA changing rules every year or so, you might have the perfect style for the rules one year and it gets thrown out the window the next. At least that's how I see things going.

There is no guarantee any of the guys from the U.S. that weren't on the team would have done any better than before. Look at all the world champs from last year that didn't even place top 10 this year.

I stole this from a post by PT on The Mat forums...

How the 2007 World Champions fared in the 2008 Olympics:
55: Hamid Sorian Reihanpour (Iran) - 5th
60: David Bedinadze (Georgia) - 16th
66: Farid Mansurov (Azerbaijan) - 19th
74: Yavor Yankiev (Bulgaria) - Bronze
84: Aleksei Mishin (Russia) - 9th
96: Ramaz Nozadze (Georgia) - 12th
120: Mijial Lopez (Cuba) - Gold

How the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalists fared in the 2007 World Championships:
55: Nazyr Mankiev (Russia) - Bronze
60: Islam-Beka Albiev (Russia) - 9th
66: Steeve Guenot (France) - Bronze
74: Manuchar Krirkvelia (Georgia) - Bronze
84: Andrea Minguzzi (Italy) - 45th
96: Aslanbek Khushtov (Russia) - DNW in '07, 20th in '06
120: Mijial Lopez (Cuba) - Gold

Side note: Jake Deitchler was outscored in only 1 of the 5 periods he wrestled against the silver and bronze medalists but went 0-2. Adam Wheeler won the only medal for the team. The two most maligned guys (by internet posters) represented the USA very well.

I'm so tired of this "Russian style of wrestling" crap. We are Americans and we have our own style of wrestling. If anything, I think it's the Americans buying into this other style of wrestling. We grow up wrestling an intense in-your-face style, and that is what we need to stick with and incorporate more technique. Our intense style is what wins matches, but if we have the technique we will dominate. For you people that buy into that Russian style of wrestling is setting your kids up for failure. That style of wrestling requires your kids to train in that system from a young age until after the developmental stage. I have seen it happen to many kids and it just doesn't work. I trained in the system and had to make major adjustements which most people can't make. The American style wrestling wrestling is where it's at, we just have to infuse more technique to our aggressive style. I'm so tired of this "we should wrestle like Russians" crap. We should wrestle like Americans. Go to Russia if you want to wrestle like a Russian.

Harry,

I meant no disrespect to you or any other wrestlers. I made the suggestion not knowing of past implications to the Russian style of wrestling.

On a side note my son DJ did enjoy training camp and Fargo under you and the other coaches.

And he has never trained in any other style then what he has learned right here.

Harry:

I have read that Jake Deitchler is seriously considering not enrolling in Minnesota in order to concentrate on Greco. Generally speaking, I think it's a very good idea. I think more high school wrestlers with Olympic aspirations should consider your model of attending a school that allows them to train full time in either freestyle or Greco.

Your thoughts?

Hank

Harry -- Thanks for representing American style of wrestling so well. I love watching guys get after it and you did that so well.I would have loved to watch you compete through the buffering live feeds from NBC but and proud with the way the team represented themselves and their country. I would rather none of them medal then do what the 84kg wrestler did after he received his bronze medal.

Hank:
I think Jake is making the right decision in choosing the less-chosen road of training in Greco-Roman right out of high school. If he wants to be a world and olympic medalist he has to take this road. Everyone says you only get 4 years of NCAA wrestling, and I agree with that, but what most people don't realize is that those 4 years, 18-21, are critical in developing skills. I would never tell a kid not to try to wrestle in the NCAA, but I would inform him that if his goals are to be a Olympic champion then he needs to be training Greco-Roman or freestyle during these years. I plan on talking to Jake once he gets back from China because I think he could really open the doors even more for kids that are thinking of training right out of high school. The program up here is unbelievable and it keeps getting better. I can almost promise you that at least 6 of our next 7 world team and Olympians will come out of this program. For the guys that want to be Greco-Roman wrestlers, this is the place to be - no ifs, ands, or buts about it. There is one guy from Ohio that I'm disappointed in. He turned down a chance to train here and that was probably his last chance to train here.

Brady:
The Swede was totally out of line with his actions of walking off the podium, but I understood why he did what he did. I would never have the balls to do it, but when you get screwed over and over for years it kind of takes a toll on you and I'm sure it did on him. I think he thought that was the perfect time to express his feelings against FILA and their nonsense. Personally I don't care about the rule changes but I do care when the refs can't call the right calls or call them consistently. Disrespectful? Yes. Right timing? No. Warranted? Maybe.
