"After reading these posts concerning the Jameson-Toal match, the one thing that stuck out most for me after announcing it for TV wasn't the points gave up at the end of the period or the win for Toal, etc. What stood out for me was the class shown by Tony after he lost. Here's a kid who almost never loses who showed complete respect for Toal...a sincere congratulations to his opponent, no headgear throwing, no whining and running off the mat, a smile on the podium in the number "2" spot. In my book, this sport could use countless Tony Jamesons, and honestly, many coaches should take a page out of his book also. I respect his parents, he seemed to be raised like a gentleman. Oh yeah, he is one hell of a fun wrestler to watch and announce also!"

Sort of like the Barry Sanders' attitude about touchdowns. Act like you've been there before and are going back. He responded the same at Perry district last year against Habat, as I recall. Most D1 champs lose during the year; they know there is something still left at the end. Anyone willing to bet against him at state? Not me.

I almost made the exact same comment concerning Tony's attitude of the loss. I've seen it a number of other times, but two other times they were caught on tape. Tommy Rowlands beat the PSU heavyweight (who's name escapes me right now) at the Big Ten tournament and he (PSU's 285) went back to shake up and gave an, "Okay. Now I know what I have to do to prepare over the next week or two." type of shoulder shrug.
The other was the Jacob Vaughan match that he was pinned in the finals with the broomstick. Albeit a bit confused in the beginning, he stood up, shook hands and went off the mat. He showed an understanding of sometimes that is how it goes, but next time I'll be even more prepared.
Great points about manning up and taking the loss. No one likes to lose, but in the arena of sport there are only two options.

Mark:
The Penn State heavyweight was Pat Cummins.
Interesting that this discussion comes up now because I was going to make it a point to say something to my wrestlers today about this topic because of what we witnessed on Friday. We had a triangular and one of the opposing wrestlers (whose coach is a class guy, so this is not reflective of the team) got pinned twice and both times threw his headgear, slammed his fist on the mat, and so on.
I know it feels horrible to lose but win or lose, the wrestler should do it with class, no matter what.
Tony Jameson showed great sportsmanship in his loss to Toal. It shows exactly what Roe said of Barry Sanders - he's been there before and he'll be there again.
It's also interesting that this topic is about the Ironman finals videos and it's been taken over by Tony Jameson versus Zach Toal. It shows that Jameson is so exciting he can take over the discussion of a tournament he wasn't even in! haha.

It is on youtube. You can search Tony Jameson or Zach Toal. They have all of the other finals matches too as I think was mentioned before

Finally watched the Toal v Jameson bout. Nothing against Toal but Jameson is clearly the better wrestler. Every point he gave up was bad technique/sloppiness. Jameson gives up the first takedown by not bothering to block Toal properly on a sloppy attempt to spin behind. He gives up 2 and 2 by riding legs recklessly while looking for back points. Even that last takedown--Jameson stopped wrestling and allowed Toal to spin behind.
The things Jameson does well in this match are things that will continue to work well for him in the future. And at the next level, D1, Jameson will ride a lot smarter, using his legs to tick time off the clock rather than trying to force back points when they're not there.
Jameson was sloppy and Toal was good enough to take advantage. I'm sure that this type of haphazard performance will not be repeated when winning really matters ie: the state meet, the Dapper Dan, Sr Nationals, etc...

Hank, definitely respect your opinion, but I was puzzled by this post and tonight's occurrences finally gave me reason to reply.
This seems like a simple dismissal of the victory by Toal. Although Jameson's lack of concentraton may have given Toal a couple scoring opps, isn't that still part of the sport?
I find it hard to simply dismiss actual results, you know? This is similar to saying a football team who wins the total yardarge and time of possession battles but loses the game because of costly turnovers is really the better team. I always argue, isn't protecting the football part of the sport?
Toal wins over Jordan tonight, from what I just read. I am sure he and Jordan have wrestled thousands of times in Jordan's gym, and it is easily arguable that Jordan is better based on prior results.
However, he now owns in-season wins over Jameson and Jordan. In my opinion this cannot, and should not, be marginilized because we think the other two are better.
I wonder if the fact that Jameson and Jordan are bigger names, or have signed with Big 10 programs, effects the way people watch and critique these matches.
