"Thanks for the Triv Show tip with Coach Ryan.Best thing heard...they are already recruiting the elite #1 sophmore in Ohio."
------------------------------
Tom E,
i am sure they are---- the top freshman too---- but i am sure coach Ryan didnt mention anyone by name, that would be NCAA violation.
Mr Sommers,
yes i agree no reason for PD to cover Ohio st vs Michigan wrestling match---- i just have this thing for the once mighty PD, it has gone downhill alot. The Akron Beacon J was a once great newspaper --i am from Akron ---its pathetic now, i hear its up for sale again.

Tom E,
i don't know if it was that close, David Taylor beat Logan Stieber 7 to 3 or 7 to 4 in 2006 Ironman finals at 103--- Taylor as i recall controlled the 2nd half of the match.
ohio has a super
sophomore class
, at the top Stieber, David Habat of Ignatius, Brad Squire, Jamie Clark, Pierce Harger of Moeller, Wukie of U School, and a few others i am forgetting right now.
i don't see much coming out of central ohio anymore, relative to the rest of the state ????

Bob:
I think when the Buckeye Wrestling Club kids and the Miron kids grow up there will be more coming out of central Ohio. Northeast Ohio has been traditionally very strong in youth wrestling, but the other parts of the state are building their youth programs now as well.

Quote from Gary Sommers's post:
|
"Keep in mind OSU is not in Cleveland, a small minority of NE Ohioans have any affiliation with OSU, and while significant this is not a national championship meet. I would think the PD has more of an obligation to the local teams than to one 140 miles away.
Obviously the people on here are wrestling fans, but let's be a bit objective and see it how the PD must."
|
Maybe reasonable in general, but exceptions have been made by the PD, and at least two of our high profile radio stations (WTAM is toward the top in drive-time ratings) think this is a "story". I also think it is a story because of 1. the local connections (40% of the starting lineup is from NE Ohio) and 2. the obvious parallel to the change in direction of OSU's football program which most NE Ohio sports fans have a decided opinion about. I absolutely believe that certain comments of Tom Ryan had some casual fans sitting up and taking notice.
It's a perfect circumstance for a follow-up story by the Plain Dealer to augment the radio spots. I'm not asking for daily coverage. One before and one after would be nice, though I'd settle for one preview.
Further, the PD should be aware of Greater Cleveland's general interest in wrestling anyway. 4 or so years ago I did a rather simple analysis of activity on what is, in effect, the Plain Dealer's website, Cleveland.com. I found that participation in the wrestling forum section topped all other high school sports and was fourth overall among ALL forums ranking behind a couple of the pro teams and a social (politics, etc.) interest section. That has since changed as the administration of that site virtually detroyed serious participation.
I think one can objectively look at the Plain Dealer and decide that one DOES NOT LIKE some of the things the PD views does. However, I strongly approve of their persistent reporting on the foreclosure crisis and it's effect on neighborhoods here.
I have worse complaints about some of the TV media. I absolutely refuse to watch the "action news" which, in Cleveland, is WOIO, channel 19. I happen to despise how they "view themselves".

Steve posts: "However, I strongly approve of their persistent reporting on the foreclosure crisis and it's effect on neighborhoods here. "
Steve, how could the PeeeeDeee not report on it ??
Cuyahoga County is an epi-center nationally of the so-called sub-prime problem. i fault the PD for Not reporting on it before
it became a disaster beyond repair in certain neighborhoods. No KUDOS to PeeeDeee.

Steve, this shows how individual tastes vary, Ch 19 the only one i do watch, imo
their reporters/anchors have an "edge" that i like
,---- the other stations are nicey nicey boring, blah to me.

We agree to disagree, though I always liked Denise Dufala.
I will grant that, given the state of broadcast coverage, there is something to be said for getting "entertained"; one could argue that there is no value at all, otherwise.

The Plain Dealer was finally heard from, Tuesday morning, printing a brief synopsis "from wire reports". It contained the key features that made it a story: Tressel's name (first word of the headline), record crowd, long losing streak to Michigan broken, and the three wins by the local boys.
Better late than never.

Mike Trivisonno did another wrestling program yesterday, this time featuring Brain Brakeman and the wrestling beat writers from the PD, News Herald and Canton Repository (I think it's called) and ref Guy Trinetti. Good stuff. If you get a chance I think you can access it from the WTAM archives.

Steve,
The PD guys didnt keep refering to the "Mentor Meagrinder" did they ?
Gosh that LSD they popped in the 70's has distorted their view--- they still think Nordonia, N Olmsted, St Ignatius, Elyria, Maple Heights, Lake Catholic, Cleveland St Joe, Walsh Jesuit and others that used to populate Mentor--- the PD still thinks those teams are as strong as they used to be and that Mentor is the same old meatgrinder where Brakeman top picks often wouldnt even get out.
it aint your fathers Mentor district.

Bob:
There is no district meet at Mentor this weekend so that decreases the chances of anyone making that mistake.
The "meatgrinder" now resides in Massillon--as do most of the best public schools in NE Ohio.
Now, will Pat refer to the "Mentor meatgrinder" in print this weekend? Odds are 50-50 he accidentally does.
