Discussion Topic: Ohio State's future at 174

I think we see other lineup changes as well. I don't thin there is any way Hump makes 133. I think his troubles as of late are indicative of the cut taking it's tole. The scenario with Palmer taking a RS has been discussed and would allow Jaggers and Hump to slide up while Livingston steps in at 133. That would give us:
125-Triggas
133-Livingston
141-Hump
149-Jaggers
157-Nemec/Johnstone
165-Sponseller
174-Bergman/JUCO transfer
184-Pucillo
197-Weakley/Magrum
285-CoMo/Weinrich/DiAgosta/Hiles

Scott:
The notion of Lance redshirting has been discussed. But, J. Jaggers has done some fabulous wrestling over the last month at141. He wrestled brilliantly today and against Russell. He took charge of both matches, got the scores he needed, and stayed smart the whole time. I'm really impressed with how good he's looked. Hard to see him moving from this spot.
Humphrey may have to make a tough cut for one more season--or sit.

Hank, I like the phrase "stayed smart". I think that has been a key in J's current success. He knows when to shoot and when not to, when to ride or cut the guy lose, when to tie up & eat up time, just great match management (and terrific scrambling) from him. He's got some nice momentum going into the Big Tens; let's get some good seeding and hope for the best. GO BUCS!

It was posted elswhere that Magrum is projected as a 174/184. Is it possible that Magrum is "wrestling up" with Witt a title contender for Oak Harbor at 171 and Magrum a heavy favorite at 171 or 189. If that is the case then it is even more impressive as he will likely be a 3xer with some big wins including Roddy. He is a blue chip prospect for 174 if he can make it comfortably.

Scott: Not trying to be contrary on purpose....
Cody Magrum is a fine hs wrestler but I don't think he's a "blue chip." I'd reserve that term for guys like Palmer and Sponseller.
I don't think he could start as a true frosh and win often in the Big Ten regardless of weight class. I see him as a classic "redshirt" frosh type of guy.
However, if he can make 174, he's probably your starter for next season unless a transfer is brought in.

What 171's in the current class do you consider "blue chip"? How do feel these guys compare to Magrum? If you look at his career, Magrum has some nice credentials in Ohio(probable 3x champ) and nationally. I would not expect Magrum to make as much of an impact as a freshman as Palmer or Sponseller but do see him as more ready than Weakley was because of his ability to ride and he utilizes the front headlock effectively. He will have a great workout situation being in between 2 absolute studs in the lineup.

What about this Finnicum kid out of Washington state they recruited? Isn't he supposed to be decent? I know they said he missed his senior season due to an injury, but does anyone know anything about him?

Scott: You ask a really good question and one that exposes me as a "loudmouth."
I suppose it's how one defines "blue chip."
If by blue chip, we mean the ability to wrestle .500 or better as a true frosh (in the Big Ten that's far more difficult than in most other conferences) then I don't know if any of the current 171's can do it. Mike Benefiel, NW recruit, might have been good enough but he redshirted this year.
Brian Roddy looks to me like a guy that will likely redshirt as a frosh. Is he better than Magrum? I'm not sure.
As Bob Preusse points out, it's incredibly hard to AA as a true frosh in D1. Last season there were only two wrestlers, O'Connor and Palmer, that did it. This year only Kellen Russell and Colt Sponseller appear even close to earning AA honors.
Notice I never really answered your question.

"What about this Finnicum kid out of Washington state they recruited? "
Finnicum is not ranked by anyone, may not have really been "recruited" (as in "actively sought") ??
Magrum is ranked # 10 all classes combined at 189 by AWN, but though i certainly like Cody's overall ability on his feet, he can take you down, changes levels well, is pretty quick--- and he did beat Brian Roddy the last time they met in a regular season event, Ironman Quarterfinals 2006--- Cody a weakness on bottom was exposed in the Ironman finals this season by Joe Budi from Wisconsin who put the Turk on him twice for big points. (Budi looked great, going to Old Dominion of all places.)
So even if Cody can make 174 next season, he is perhaps not the answer to immediate help. Perhaps, look for Jr college
immediate help
if the buckeyes can swing it.
