Dan - I'm a big Palmer fan, but do you really only list Dustin as a "slight favorite"?
I think Dustin and Metcalf are heads and shoulders above a very crowded field at 49, and would list him as a prohibitive favorite in this dual.
133 - You are both right about Reiter, something's off. Could be a great 'big name' win for Humphries.
184 - Watching Kish now is painful. He looks like a shell of his former self, and I feel bad for him. A senior, he is obviously unhealthy, and I can't think of a worse way to wrap up an otherwise stellar career. I have always respected Kish and hope he gets healthy before the end of the year. (partly because I want SOMEONE to beat the stalling machine Varner)

Didn't Pucillo beat Varner at the H.S. Nationals in Cleveland? And I think he did it convincingly if I recall. I realize that was a few years ago, but at least Mike has that going for him. It would be interesting if they met at the NCAA tournament.

Yes, Pucillo beat Varner in the finals of NHSCA Senior Nationals. I believe he also beat Hudson Taylor of Blair in that tournament (or was it Patrick Bond?). I don't read that much into that match though, as Varner did beat Jake Herbert this year (despite the stalling, great match; Varner is freakishly strong).

Todd and Pucillo are definitely the two that can knock of Varner.
I have watched Varner about half a dozen times this year, and I'm not sure I've seen an ofensive attempt. I just don't like to see that type of wrestling rewarded, although yes, he is very, very good. And a beast on top.

Although some will argue that Varner's good positioning, ridiculous strength, etc. make him interesting to watch from a wrestlers perspective, I do not enjoy watching him at all. Supposedly he is a stud on top, something he hasn't made abundantly clear in any of the matches I've seen. I would love to see Pucillo knock him off at nationals, in a Senior Nationals rematch. I could be wrong on this, but wasn't Varner winning that match until Pucillo hit a 5 point roll from the bottom? Am I thinking of another match? Regardless, Pucillo is a pleasure to watch, whereas Varner is like watching paint dry.

Pucillo can beat Varner. Pucillo has the perfect style to do it. He's got fabulous stuff on his feet and cannot be denied a whole match. Plus, he's impossible to ride. The issue for Pucillo will always be the same--getting past Todd. Todd is fantastic but he's not likely to beat Varner because he's not as slick as Mike. But Todd knows how to wrestle Pucillo.
A lot has been made of Varner beating Herbert at Midlands. Herbert had not been training in folkstyle the entire year. It makes a huge difference.
Also, Varner was considered "unbeatable" in high school at Senior Nationals. Then Pucillo took him easily. Key for Mike will be making it to the finals.

Is the match going to be televised at all on Big Ten Network or anywhere online?

so as I'm walking home from school today..I notice the mail truck is right in front of my house. and my mail man, Tony, whom I practically tackle everyday asking "
is there a letter from Ohio State for me today??"
is sitting in it, holding up an envelope. I then realize it is addressed to me, Margaret A LaMantia, and lo and behold it's from OSU.
naturally. I flip. I run inside. have my best friend on the phone, and contemplate throwing it in the fireplace...but I open it.
it said
"we are reviewing your application to the Ohio State University"
wow. =( It could be anytime through the end of March.

Maggie, from way back with mine and certainly more recently with my children's experiences, if the envelope is large and/or thick it is good news. If it is small it is probably not-so-good news
Where else have you applied?

Hey, you couldn't blame her if she has good taste.
Especially with the high esteem the school is held in and its top-25 academic ranking.

Well there's always applying to one of the satellite campuses...then later transferring to main campus after your grades are in. That's what my friend did.
