Discussion Topic: Will the Monroeville 4 be the next 4x State Champs?

Yeah, I definitely didn't see Stiltner going 1-2...or Stephens going two and out...amazing tournament this year!

It seems to me that Tessari's state performance has somewhat tarnished some views of him. As was mentioned before, he was up 9-0 on Inghram before sticking him at the Ironman, and beat Robinson, Mitcheff, and Inghram consecutively to win Brecksville, pretty impressive.

His performance at state, and this is not meant to take anything away from the kid from Northmor, was, to me, one which we will probably not see again from Tessari. He wrestled sloppily on top, which is a position where he had scored points all year. I have to think that, despite how experience he is for a freshman, the nerves might have gotten to him.

I think all four win four, which would surpass Ed's total, pretty impressive.

Pat,

I agree with that assesment of Tessari on top. The move he got hit with was very Junior high. He got sloppy and careless by dropping his head down low and the opponent reached back and got him. I have a hard time seeing Tessari wrestling like that again.

The state finals have a funny effect on wrestlers and the nervousness that enters them is overwhelming. I have asked many state finalists what was the most nervous they were wrestling and they said the first time they were in the state finals.

Coach Shaw makes a good point and I think it's one worth repeating. The odds of four wrestlers from the same school--including 3 in the same grade--all winning four state titles are not that high. Too many things go wrong. Guys get sick. They get hurt. They run into someone that presents a bad style matchup. They get caught with a big move. Etc...Etc...

I never thought Sean Nemec would lose his state finals match to the Garfield Heights kid after destroying him the week before. Justin Dobies got beat in the finals by a wrestler he had clobbered as well. My own wrestler, Josh Greenspan, defeated Kevin Boross 12-4 after losing to him two weeks in a row (and neither match was very close). As they say--sh-t happens.

I am blown away by the incredible talent of these four wrestlers. But can all four win four titles? If I had to bet $100, I'd say no. And, no, I'm not interested in making the bet.

I would agree with you. Also, what happens if one of these guys runs into the next geat one? Did anyone really think that Phillips would be Roddy at Ironman? What if they hit a growth spurt and have trouble adapting to a new weight? Many, many variables being this far out.

as Hank says, possible but odds are against it: its a long hard road--- factors include injuries, health, girlfriend problems, bad calls, PRESSURE. Too much accolades too soon ??? and just maybe the "next superstar" comes along in their weight class at state ? Alot of factors.

but each is certainly capable and the 3 Monroeville kids that are undefeated certainly deserve it, see my comments on thread "Hypothetical Matches". Each of those 3 has taken a hard road and prevailed so far. Congrats!

Out of curiosity, does anyone think Roddy would have beaten Phillips if they wrestled in the same division in Columbus?

I understand the match at the Ironman was pretty one sided, but we can speculate that Roddy was not himself since he lost two matches the very next weekend (one by fall to Thomusseit). Under the bright lights of the Schott, I would probably have leaned towards Roddy getting revenge on the phenom.

I think Brian Roddy is an outstanding wrestler, but I think it would be more of the same. How much better is Phillips than he was at the beginning of December. As far as the possibility of Phillips moving up in weight, they would have to adjust fo him not the other way around.

I agree with you...but I guess we will never know. I think Roddy wasn't mentally ready to wrestle a freshman at Phillips' level. After wrestling him once, I think Roddy would make the necessary adjustments. But, it was almost like last year at states where Roddy did upset Kilgore. So who's to say who would beat who...it'd be fun to watch though! <smiling>

Chue, that is the most accurate statement on here. It will always be fun to watch. The Ohio State Championships are completely outstanding. I truly feel bad for a lot of other states that don't have the electricity and talent of the Ohio State tournament. As a matter of fact, I feel bad for my wife (who coaches High School Girls Basketball) because I have been to that State Tournament and it only has that same feeling for the parents and classmates of the student-athletes involved in the actual games. These young men from Monroeville, their teammates, their coaches and parents have brought something new to the table in Ohio. A new excitement and a new chapter in the great history of Ohio High School Wrestling. In the end though, 10 years from now, there will be another story dominating forums like this and we will all look back and say, remember when the Stieber brothers and Phillips and Tessari and...

That's absolutely right. I used to be one of those students who in high school, would love to go to the football/basketball games. Although I did wrestle, it just wasn't the same feeling of being a fan at the time. But now that I'm in college and remembering the feeling and memories, it means so much more to be a fan. Scott, or anyone else reading this thread, look back a couple years and who do you think made the type of sensation that the Monroeville wrestlers have at such a young age?

The opportunity to get the state's best together and watch them "have at it" is one of the unique components of our sport. The beauty of our sport is that the argument as to "who would beat who" gets settled on the mat.

Re: Phillips v Roddy. I would never say that Roddy can't beat Phillips. But Phillips has a rare feel for wrestling. Watch him closely. The timing on his shots, his positioning on his feet, his ability to finish his moves without seeming to exert any effort--he's truly gifted. I always think of how easy Cael Sanderson made it look in college when I watch Chris Phillips.

I look back and think about the early 1990's when I was still in high school and college and the big talk then was not necessarily a few kids, but the shift in power from St. Edward to Walsh. Names like Musser, Mollica, Plouse, Heskett, Knupp, and Marchette dominated Ohio wrestling through the 1990's. Those Walsh Jesuit teams would probably still win the DI title. Sveda, Johnson, Leemaster, the names go on and on.
