There are wrestlers and some whole teams whose go-to takedown and turn is a slide-by, hook the near leg, lock up the merkle, extend the opponent forward (I think this is criteria for the takedown call), and then the lateral roll to get the opponent in near-fall position. It's not super common to see, which ups its effectivness.

I've never been a merkle guy but I think as wrestlers and coaches, we've all been in situations where we've thought, "he could do a merkle right there."

Corby Running of Clinton-Massie had an outstanding slide-by to a merkle and won state titles in 2009 and 2010. Andrew Hoskins of Dayton Christian had a good one as well and used it to place at state three times from 2013-2015.

At the district tournament this weekend, I saw a 106 and a 220 win with it. For the 220, it was his go-to move throughout the tournament.

IMO, a high schooler who is serious about wrestling should be exposed to it enough to know how to defend/counter it. YouTube and FloWrestling are amazing resources but I haven't seen a merkle defense/counter video on there.

The only "merkle specific" defense / counter offense I've ever seen taught was by Tim Dernlan when he swung by Mechancisburg when I was still there and he still at Ashland.

I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when Dernlan taught that. I think one of the greatest things we can do as competitors and as coaches is to constantly learn and evolve.

I was coaching my club kids last night and we were discussing how Kyle Snyder does his overtie. We don’t see it done like that very much at the younger levels, but with Snyder being so great and so popular, as his technique spreads out via social media, I think we’ll start to see it more... like, for example, Askren-esque leg passes became more en vogue in the late 2000s/2010s.

Mark, Hank, etc.:
I actually AM the godfather now (I have an awesome five month old nephew/godson).

Clark passing it on to DeSanto; hitting it when it matters most. RBY is one of the more athletic 133 lbers and to be able to hit on him means that it will work on anyone that does not have a skillset to defend it just as we saw wth NaTo and Clark.

The Merkle is a beast. Maybe rename it the bridled beast.

Quote from Ben Golden's post:

"I've never thought the merkle was a legitimate takedown. It doesn't seem like control to me, more of an odd criteria. I know it's a takedown per the rules, but it just seems too cheap."

No slight intended. I think everyone needs to recondition the way they think, especially if you are coaching kids interested in winning.

I am rereading Skin in the Game; a quote that is relevant->"you do not want to win an argument. You want to win.

Interpreted for wrestling; Thoughts and talk are cheap. Scoring points is what matters.

Well I’ve not competed in wrestling in quite a while, so I’ll stick to thinking and talking about it here on the message board.. And my thought continues to be that it’s typically too cheaply earned of a takedown that does not demonstrate control.

Holy smokes, Ben!!! Did you just challenge Rex to a best-of-three takedowns!?!?!

That’s how I read it so please note that Licking Heights will have open mats beginning Sunday, April 11th (6-7:30p), and running every Sunday thereafter to May 30th.

See you guys then!

How exciting!!! I’ll post to social media now.
