"However, I think we might be moving towards a more productive coaching paradigm. The phrase, Either I win or learn is getting repeated a lot and is a much healthier interpretation of loss. "

This only is true if the actions line up with the words. I heard two coaches say this (or something close to this) to their female wrestlers this past weekend. 1 followed it up with actions & words after the match. The other gave his wrestler an ear full for making a mistake that cost her the match.
An old DC Talk song said, "If it's gonna be believable it's gotta be true."

Brady-
Thanks for story and insight. One is better than none.
Obviously, I don’t know the whole story with Kaleb regarding his fingers, but I had empathy as soon as I saw what happened.
He looks the best he ever has. He can finish on Brooks. Just needs to get his attack off closer to the center or give himself a little more room on the edge. He was deep. Deep enough to finish. Quicker recognition and action towards his position and what to do. He is so close.

Quote from Justin Hayes's post:

"Providential you resurrected this post. I've been persevering through several difficult life trials and I keep coming back to the fact that God foundationally built any resilience (I've even been using that specific word) I have in the wrestling room..."
|
Foundationally, in the raw temporal sense, an unsophisticated, experiential reference point for (persevering, pushing through, keep going, not quitting) to a soft 7th grade boy who neither knew the how to or why so for participating in an endeavor that cultivates resilience.
But that isn't the whole story, or even the glorious part of the story, as I now know both the how to and why so, as well as the value of, persevering...which Providentially started in a cafeteria with wrestling mats on the floor. :)
