Discussion Topic: What's going on at Iowa State?

Hence, the reason Kolat is mad as he represents the SoCon and knows exactly what it means.

Dresser is taking care of his people to ensure that they have the best chance of qualification. Preserving his self interests. I'll take that bet against you Gary and say the AD does nothing more than a written reprimand if that.

What is the saying? "It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission."

If Colbray and Coleman place, all will be forgiven (except by the coaches in the conference who were treated unfairly.) Both have lots of quality wins and look to be in the #8-16 range. Plus, it makes the NCAA tournament that much more interesting.

Last Chance Open.

All:

If you were one of Dresser’s wrestlers and understood what was about to play out, would you have agreed to participate?

Easy to say no sitting at a desktop at 7am, far removed from the situation. Ultimately, probably not.

As a man once said...we're no longer rational beings but rationalizing beings.

Very few people would say no to their coach. His job is to figure out how to put his wrestlers in positions to be successful. I sincerely doubt they thought about it at all.

Dresser's point was that others are doing the same thing. Bono sent Sebastian, who defaulted his first match which apparently got him to do the required number of matches.

The pretty clear change needs to be medical forfeits don't count towards match totals.

You could also make an argument that matches against a teammate don't qualify.

Agree with Hank, hard to imagine any HS or college athlete declining, not their fault.

The following article is from the Iowa State Daily, their version of The Lantern. It's basically a student journalist saying, "No problem here, nothing to see, move along folks".

The "well others are doing it" is such a bs excuse. Dresser is an adult with years of experience and the fact that he still uses that as an excuse shows his true character, he's a weak man. Would he let his own children use that bs excuse?

I don't even see an argument for it.
Did wrestle offs, before the season started, count? If not, why not? What is the difference?

The only thing I can think of is the official start of the season date. I'm pretty sure most wrestle-offs occur prior to the actual start of the competitive season.

But that truly is all I have. And even that could be wrong.

That is entirely a valid point. However I just can not come to grips with how lame this really is.
It would be like if you had a kid tossed for FMC. Then you set up two "made up" events to overcome his suspension so he would be available for the properly scheduled events. Can you tell me that is something that you could condone? I don't think any of us would stoop to that level.
Just my $.02.

Listen, I think this is a complete bush league move, but the coaches job is to put his athletes in the best position possible. I watched the Titans run about 3 minutes off the clock by taking multiple false start penalties until the clock reached 5 minutes against the Pats. It was pretty bush league, awful for the sport, and terrible to watch, but it was within the rules, so Vrabel did it (along with others).

These rules and loopholes are terrible, and will get changed, but until they do, coaches have every right to "game the system" to get their athletes in the best position possible.

I see absolutely no difference between what Dresser did and the coaches that use healthy scratches to protect their wrestler's records and seeds. They are both "acting in the best interest of their athletes and within the rules". I despise both actions but until the rules or seeding criteria are changed how can you fault them for being selfish and playing within the rules?

This is a macro vs micro debate.

On the macro scale (the good of wrestling) this is a terrible case. It makes wrestling look bush league. It hurts smaller schools ability to put their wrestlers in the NCAA tournament and it brings nothing but negative attention to the sport.

On a micro level, this move helped Iowa State and NW get their guys into an AQ position.

If my college coach said you are defaulting in :01 seconds, I would have defaulted — and despised him for it. If I got the W, I’d have taken the W and never talked about it again. Ever. “These are not the droids you’re looking for.”

The greatness of this sport lies in the personal challenges you worth through and the competition against others on the mat.

In my opinion Dresser cheapened the integrity of the sport and his team doing this. He deserves any criticism he gets.
