Curious as to why there aren't more of our top guys competing this weekend? I would think guys were chomping at the bit to compete...any insight???

Word is with no monetary gain and it not being a qualifier for anything, there is no benefit to many of the top level guys in competing. Not saying I agree there, but losing would certainly hurt their seeding for trials and there is always the injury risk.

I had heard that too. Additionally, if what the FRL guys were talking about on Wednesday occurs it’s sounds like this year may not count against anyone. As far as the action is concerned
-Pletcher gets tech’d by some guy I’ve never heard of. The same guy went and tech’d Dean Heil in the next round. Who the hell is this guy? They were legit wins too, nothing crazy. The guy looks like he’s into hemp and the Grateful Dead and he just owned two studs.
-No Paddy Gallagher, unless I missed him.
-Hoffman wrestler Nino Bonacursi again and lost again. Hoffman looks like a legit sized 197, much healthier and active. He still seems to struggle to get by elite guys hand head defense. He wrestled fairly decent, just had no answers for Bonacoursi’s short offense.
-Kollin destroyed Trextler from Stanford again. Not much of a match. We’ll see how Hoffman does against him.
-Kyle Snyder wrestling in the tournament is the equivalent of sending your varsity guys to a high school JV tournament. He and Kollin are the best two guys.
-Orndorf lost 12-11 to the heavy from Pitt. Orndorf had a beautiful arm throw, another gut from a tripod position to put two fours on the board. He had zero answers for Thompson’s double legs. He gave up three doubles and one single.

Well, that's intriguing; please update us if you find out who it was.

Yea, I remember last year when Kharchla was injured in the US Open (I think) by Tyler Berger. With this whole Covid thing I don't blame them if they pass on this tournament. And are some of them in shape for a tournament like this?

-Pletch goes 0-2, gets tech’d by Mitch McKee.
-David Carr beats Ryan Deakin and then is solidly beaten by Massa
-Gavin Hoffman bests Trexler (a fringe top ten 197) 10-5
-Moore gets revenge on the NDSU guy from last year and makes the finals
-Gadsden comes out and gets up 3-1 on Snyder before Kyle medically forfeits. Looks like a knee or ankle injury. Must have planted on it wrong. Moore v Gadsen for the US open championship

Snyder's injury did not look good. When he planted, it looked like his leg buckled a bit. Not good.
Moore's last takedown at the end of the match was slick. It had misdirection in the form of Myles Martin.

Sure, it qualifies college guys for an Olympic redshirt, but the nations elite senior level freestylers (for the most part) aren’t college guys. And any that are (Spencer, yanni, etc.) have already qualified for an Olympic redshirt.

-I missed a win by Pletcher. He did beat Jaden Abas. Somehow missed that one.
-Just an observation, Kollin wrestled a much cagier kind of match against Zilmer this go around. It’s pretty evident that he wants no part, and has no answer for Zilmer’s chest wraps and headlocks. Kollin is a volume shooter, and he clearly backed off his number of attempts and still managed to get caught in some exposure situations. It was a smart adjustment, as nearly all of his points came off of misdirect type shots where he was able to duck behind Zilmers defensives. Kollin has beaten Gadsen before, but I’d expect this to be a tight match. This might be a match where Kollin has to ratchet up the pace to wear down Gadsen in the back half of the match.
-After losing on the front side Orndorf rattled off three straight wins to reach the consi quarters, including a very controlled win over AA Wood from Lehigh. Orndorf is very clearly a very good Greco and Freestyle guy. I haven’t seen much in the way of leg attacks from him, and he seemed to struggle with more athletic heavies like Thompson who attack legs more frequently. He has Hemeda first match Sunday, and if he gets by him he gets Dom Bradley. He definitely looks like a top 8 heavy. Let’s see what Tervel can do with him regarding leg attacks.
-Side note, Anthony Valencia is a totally different wrestler in freestyle. With wins over Hidlay and Wick I’d say his biggest opponent has been the concrete this weekend.

I had never heard of him (Rob Mathers) either, so I did a quick Google search. Apparently he wrestled at Mizzou in 2013-2014, and then at ASU in 2015-2016, where he qualified for the 2016 NCAA tournament at 141. Looks like he placed at Fargo, and has past placements at University Nationals and at the US Open. Seems like he's had some freestyle success, but his career hasn't necessarily been consistent.
