Discussion Topic: Duals this weekend - 1/29 & 1/31

Heinselman has gained size and gotten smarter. He always had the talent.

Echemendia can go on his feet with anyone in the country. If he can learn to be a beast on bottom, you have an instant AA.

Sasso has wrestled each match like it's first round at the MSU Open. He isn't sharp but he's dmn good and does what it takes to get the W.

Smith looked much improved yesterday over earlier efforts. At a diminished 165, he could emerge as a significant AA threat.

Romero has gone from a true frosh who couldn't finish his shots and looked befuddled in scrambles to a confident, calculating title contender. He has learned the art of dictating position and continuously puts himself in situations where he has the advantage. His crackback finishes are money. I love watching him wrestle.

Hoffman was within inches of defeating Caffey. He rushed to finish when a little more focus would probably have resulted in two. This was his second consecutive positive effort against high ranked opponents. Nothing flashy about Gavin but he's eliminating silly mistakes and solid defensively. If the Bucks are to make a surge at season's end, he will play a big role.

I'm lukewarm on the rest of the lineup although Orndorf did look sharper yesterday. He could be another cog if this lineup is to surprise at season's end.

Quote from Mark Niemann's post:

"Note: JLJ called 23-10 against MSU. It was Romero that caught my eye with the crackdown position. My initial thought went back to recent John Smith technique videos being advertised or even the clip of him scoring the first takedown on a new mat. And then I wondered if at least Romero had been inspired by either. Glad to see I’m not the only one who noticed that position."

That position was worked on often in the Burg room. When he beat M.Lewis in freestyle the scoring before Lewis went on to win the Jr FS Gold, he scored often from here. Scoring in FS there is easier than folk — and he has gained the confidence (and increased horse power), and a new wrinkle that is making his finishes better.

As Jack referenced, Kaleb’s bottom is so much better than his 1st two years at tOSU. He was so superior to 99.9% of kids in HS, he had no struggles getting away. It took some time but he’s getting closer to that point again — escaping last year from Skatza of MN was huge in confidence.

I think in a year or two, Anthony E will be very difficult to ride as well.

"Echemendia can go on his feet with anyone in the country. If he can learn to be a beast on bottom"

I was hoping he could at least try a tilt or arm bar or something that would get him some back points to make his matches a little easier for him. He has all the right people in the room to teach him, and he is strong.

"Sasso has wrestled each match like it's first round at the MSU Open. He isn't sharp but he's dmn good and does what it takes to get the W"

I remember last year he started slow but came on strong as the season progressed, hoping for the same. Man those Pa. kids can ride though, I always feel confident when he's riding.

Jack: Sasso is also incredible on bottom. It may take a bit but he's coming out. He always knows how to react to his opponent. He's a clinic on top, bottom and defense.

I think sometimes last year (and maybe this year?) Sammy has looked more pedestrian in the dual meets. Possibly the weight cut? Also for people writing off guys like Decatur and Echemendia remember at the beginning of last year when many thought Romero would never crack the lineup? Or the recent improvements in Heinsleman. We were spoiled by guys like Snyder, Martin, Bo and TOmo. Most recruits (even really good ones) aren't ready to come in and be an immediate AA threat. Most guys need time to adjust to the top/bottom game, physicality/handfighting, and just being a adult and living on your own.

First shut out in a dual since 1979? Did I hear that correct. I know it’s Maryland, but that’s impressive regardless. Four duals into the season and the Bucks are still a long way off from putting it all together. I’d didn’t get to see the extra matches, but it appeared that the extra matches were pretty lopsided. Ole J.D. better learn to bury guys once he gets them on their back. He needed to swing by one of GtG’s get n’ go’s to finish off that match. Keep in mind he got beat by King Sandoval last year in the dual at Covelli, so at least he pulled through with the W. Purdue and Iowa on the slate next week. I swear, if Purdue runs the duals the same way that Illinois ran the first Tri I will fire off a series of rapid fire sternly worded emails...I’ll do it, watch me. This week will really put things in perspective for a couple of guys. Malik has a bear of a weekend, as does Cleary, and I’m curious if they just leave Rocky at home. Both of these matches would be ones that he would typically be 50/50 on, but something is amiss right now. Who do you take at 141? 197?

Seems like Romero is really pushing the pace this year. Reminding me of the old Colt Sponseller motor.

Romero and Ethan Smith have stepped up their game as far as pushing the pace and hustling to get out on bottom. It seems like almost everyone is finishing better (and more quickly).

Bucks v Iowa could be a long day but there's a chance the Bucks make it competitive-ish.

Sasso should win at 149 although his struggles to generate offense likely mean the match will be close. If Marinelli (who was out yesterday) is unavailable, Bucks will win 165.

Normally, I'd give the edge to Kemmerer over the slick Romero but Kemmerer has barely competed this season and didn't look sharp at all yesterday. Romero has a real shot in this bout if he can get out on bottom (or avoid taking it).

Gavin Hoffman looked much better his last two duals and Jacob Warner is a bit of a head case. Expect a tight match here esp. if Hoffman can keep Warner from scoring in the first period. An upset is not out of the question. Don't overrate Warner. He's eminently beatable.

Which brings us to 184. Nelson Brands (assuming he's the starter) is a tough hombre but he doesn't do anything real flashy. He got beat by one of the stall twins from Illinois (they don't do anything except handfight and ride hard--they make no real offensive attempts) yesterday. He's not huge either. And Rock's condiditioning is not a problem. Rock has got to get to his finishes quicker but he can generate O. If his head is on straight, this is a very close match.

Bucks are in over their heads at 125, 133, 141, 157 and 285. And if Marinelli goes, Smith (who has been much improved since Illinois) is obviously in for a tough bout.

Eierman v Echemendia could be a lot of fun with plenty of scoring unless Eierman plays it safe and chooses to make it a more traditional folk match. And Heinselman, who has been co-MVP along with Romero, has to deal with the best college wrestler since Logan Stieber. Ouch.

He should be going over that crackdown finish situation with the rest of the team. He definitely has it figured out!

Hank, great assessment. I’ll counter with one alternative thought. I think 285 is closer than we think. Cassiopi is big, and relatively agile, but he’s not in the league of the top heavys in D1. I only put him slightly ahead of the the Wisconsin kid. Orndorf threw himself on his back against the Wisconsin kid. Other than that and the loss to Luffman (which again was not his finest hour) Orndorf has a pretty solid Track record. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Orndorf keeps the match to a decision (it is heavy weight after all ). I’ll call my shot and say that he loses the match in the last 30 seconds off of an errant shot that Cassiopi counters for two. Can Tate get an upset, sure. But I put that at less than 10%. I agree, it’s going to be a tough dual for the Bucks. Hopefully they have their heads on straight for Purdue. That dual can also be closer than anticipated.
