Well the sad part is he had 2 chances for a reversal that he let slip away. But I have to say this, Sammy Sasso has one of the best wrestling IQ's I've ever seen. You can just see the wheels turning in his head when he gets in situations. He methodically goes through progressions to come out on top of his opponent. It's fun to watch. Plus he can ride when he has to.

Well...that sure was an entertaining dual. I agree that the Bucks battled and out themselves in a position to snatch an unexpected victory, but in the end a team is only as strong as it’s weakest competitor. Cleary had two opportunities to close out his match and couldn’t finish, but then again I don’t think too many have him much of a shot to win. I was more disappointed in the Jordan Decatur match. Meadley is a good but not great wrestler. He is fundamentally sound in all aspects of wrestling, but...he’s a 125, and a backup at that. Jordan’s best position has historically been neutral, but all of a sudden he appears to be a little gun shy with his attacks and seems counter dependent. I would have to go back and watch, but I don’t believe he made a shot attempt in the last two periods. That’s not a recipe for success.
On the positive end, Malik continued to look solid. I’m not sure there is a faster wrestler in division 1 than Kurt McHenry, maybe RBY. Good Lord he’s quick. If there was still a 118 weight class he’d be a force, and don’t forget that McHenry defeated Malik in a who’s number one event several years ago when they were in HS. Malik should end the dual season in solid position for a high seed at Big Tens. Let’s hope he’s away from Lee.
I’m continuing to be impressed with D’Emilio. He wrestled a full seven minutes and looked to attack the whole time. I think he has probably solidified his position for the 141 slot, and I’m thinking he’s done enough to hover right around the top #25 ranking.
Sammy looks dominant! Just as a number 1 should. Ethan Smith executed against a solid opponent when he was down late. You can see his confidence growing.
I was shocked that Rocky looked that dominant. Based on what we’ve seen out of him this year that was about as dominant a win as you can get. I didn’t see the riding time but it had to be near five minutes. That’s demoralizing for an opponent. Hopefully he has turned the corner, and can flip some of those early season losses come Big Tens. I don’t think there should be any reason why that’s not possible.
Hoffman battled against the national title favorite, albeit a one handed favorite. I’m starting to lean more towards Hoffman. I’d say the job is 60 Hoffman 40 Chase. Hoffman has one really solid win against a top 25 guy and two matches against upper echelon guys where he was at least in position to win. Full disclosure, if Amine is not healthy heading into NCAAs I’m picking A.J. Ferrari to win it. He’s too big, too athletic, and too good at wrestling to lose to a guy with one hand. Orndorf’s loss was predictable. Parris is awfully impressive.

I looked at this a little differently. Not every weight class can have a Karchla level recruit, though TR tries. I thought Cleary wrestled one of his better matches against a top ranked guy. He did have two great chances in the first period for takedowns. I assumed that was going to be a big loss going in.

As for reaction time, I don’t get it. He sat Lewan on his can with what looked like hips covered and no TD because of it. I think we got out of Cleary what he can give.

I’m more disappointed in Smith for not opening up more against a freshman (this Amine isn’t close to Myles in talent), J.D. for not pulling out a winnable match, and Orndorf getting drilled. Many opportunities to win this dual that didn’t need to rely on an unranked 57 gutting out a close one to a top 10 guy.

And give me some more of the Rock. That is who he can be more often. Same with Hoffman.

Rayvon Foley beat Devin Schroeder 10-4 last night. That could help Malik's seeding... or it could complicate matters and end up hurting his seed.

Agreed. My coach in college used to always tell us that we couldn't blame it on whoever wrestled last. It's a team effort and the rest of the team can't always put the last guy in an all or nothing situation.

The Bucks trouble spots are 133 and 285. Decatur is not only making a tough cut but there are too many situations where he is unable to chain wrestle to completion. You can't win when you can't score. Orndorf has been pinned or TF'd in 3 conference duals. That's a ridiculous series of outcomes for a wrestler purported to be an AA contender. I'd much rather see Traub whom I'm certain would give a better effort. The Parris match was an embarrassment.

There is inconsistency at 157, 184 and 197 but all three wrestlers appear to be improving. Obviously, the Bucks would have benefitted from having a few opens in which to compete but every team faces that issue.

One bright spot--besides 125, 149, 165 and 174--is the frosh D'Emilio. He has a great motor and competes in all positions. Aside from getting caught in that funky 6 point move, he has been impressive. (How soon we forget Tomasello taking a couple early season L's his redshirt frosh season when he ended up winning it all).
