Well crap. One position lead to 6 Howard points and Malik goes down. The oath back is brutal.

Two in the semis with legitimate shots to make the finals, and three in the blood round. The Bucks enter Friday night in 7th place with the opportunity to move closer to the top five. Definitely would not have thought this possible after their Big Ten performance. All three are slight underdogs in their matches, but this is the blood round. Anything is possible.

Regardless of how it the finish looks, this has to be a victory and positive for the end of the season. 285 Making AA is just fantastic, probably great wrestling along with a little luck (maybe?) on where he was in the bracket. He wasn't even considered to be starting was he ?
Rocky Jordan Making the mark he did has to shed some light that he does have potential to be better. I honestly thought he would be lucky to win 1 with how much it looks like its been a struggle.
Ethan Smith, great run thus far no matter how he ends up. I don't think he would have beat Valencia but i do think it would have been close without the injury.
Kaleb Romero is kinda my ugh on this one. Its easy to arm chair quarter back but as i went back and looked at his bio, he was something like 202-3 in high School and 4 time state champ. He had a good run this year but you would really figure he would have made more of an impact at this point. Unfortunate that last year stopped him from a potential run. Maybe i'm being to rough , but i really hope we see him really turn it on next year. I think it would have been done by now though.

Three was the “expected” number to hit and the Bucks hit it. At the beginning of the tournament I think you would have to say that Kaleb Romero was probably the second most likely guy to AA behind Sammy. He’s been a consistent performer for the last two seasons. Unfortunately he ran into a pretty impressive guy in the semis that was just better then him. Logan Massa might be the worst matchup in the entire bracket for Kaleb. In all honesty I was hopeful he would win, but I thought he actually had the lowest percentage chance to win in those blood round matches. Kaleb is one of the top eight guys at 174. It just didn’t end with a podium finish this time.
The consistent theme of Friday night was the continued exposure of bottom deficiencies within the program. It is what it is, no reason to beat a dead horse. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was surprised that Rocky wrestled all the way back to the Blood round. He put himself in a position to AA, which is probably not anywhere where most thought he might end up. For me, I thought Heinsleman was more likely to do what Rocky did. I guess you chalk this up to some form of a moral victory.
Ethan Smith absolutely could’ve been in the finals tonight. He’s winning the match in the second period, and then just got rode like a rented mule. Don’t look now, but Keith Gavin has two kids in the NCAA finals, and Pitt has absolute hammers on top between Wentzel, Bonaccursi, and Phillipi. Ethan needs to come back and push through to the third place match. I don’t like him having to wrestle Whittlake a second time. I think O’tool finishes third, and I think Ethan drops to fifth.
Sammy is a bad dude, end of statement. Good for Tate Orndorf! He got what he came to OSU for, and earned that finish. For a second he was absolutely in position to beat Hilger as well, unfortunately he has Kirkliviet for seventh so I’m not real confident in him winning that one.
The Bucks are in position for a top ten finish, which two weeks removed from a tough performance at Big Tens is better than anticipated, but not what was expected from this team at the beginning of the season. Sammy winning a title might take away some of the sting, but this is not a season the likes of which we have seen in seven or eight years. That’s a pretty good run, but we’ve come to expect more. That’s a good thing.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the third most dominant wrestler in the Big Ten (Deakin or Kemmerer arguably) at 157 getting stuck by a wrestler from Rider in the NCAA semis. Wow! Good for Delvechia but it's shocking.
Massa losing early and Heinselman getting caught on his back probably kept the Bucks from two more AA's. Then again, Orndorf came out of nowhere.
Draw plays a huge role in outcomes unless you're Sam Sasso.
After watching O'Connor in the semis (I thought Mauler got hosed...that sure looked like two with time on the clock), Sam will win it.
Maybe Rocky's confidence will grow after this tourney. But I think it's fools gold to suggest that somehow he's suddenly a much better wrestler than we think. He got a draw that fed him the right type of wrestlers for his style.
Dead Horse alert--mat wrestling failings crushed the Bucks at this tourney. Crushed them. Address them or we're going to remain a middle tier Big Ten program.

Ethan Smith is a lot of fun to watch. Always attacking and just scrapping.
I wanted to comment on Romero. He looked really great early in the year. I think the ankle injury he suffered, against Iowa, played a big part in how he did the rest of the year. There wasn’t a lot of discussion about that and how he wrestled after that injury.

Didn't realize he had hurt his ankle. Yes, that could be a big issue.

Romero got a bad draw--period. No doubt the ankle didn't help but Massa losing early was just one of those awful things. That was the wrong matchup for bloodround and lesser wrestlers had an easier time making AA. Sadly, it happens every year.

Unfortunately, the long term trend appears to continue for the Buckeyes. The inability to avenge losses, and the vulnerability to being avenged.
Orndorff was the only wrester to beat someone he had previously lost to. That is a sign that they aren't learning or getting better as the season progresses.
Malik lost to Howard and Foley. Two wrestlers he'd beaten earlier.
Ethan Smith lost to Wittlake, whom he'd just beaten two days before.
Is is a coaching problem or a wrestler problem? How can it be solved?

AGain, its easy for me to be critical but i want to stay respectful to these great wrestlers. There often seems to be a lack of the "kill them" attitude that penn and Iowa have. Is it training ? is it mental attitude ? Who knows.
I can't imagine what your body feels like after wrestling matches in a division 1 national tournament but even in the heavyweight match, it was hey i'm here, that's enough. The mental and aggressive aspects seem to be missing alot.

hopefully this is just a "bad year" problem, those do happen, but Ohio St has some things to overcome before next year.
Ohio St might Not benefit from the "extra year" ruling. We don't have any studs who might want to stay the extra year. All our main guys except Cleary are back anyway.
BUT some other teams will benefit from an AA or 2 staying on. Thus the competition jumps ahead from our status quo.
of 10 wts, i classify 5 maybe 6 as positive for the future: Sasso, 285, Smith, Romero-- and i'm adding 141 since Ech will be back and D'Emilio went 3 & 2 at NCAA. The theres Karchla
But 5 wts are Not positive today, 125, 133, 157, 184 and 197. Yes 2 top recruits are on the way, but i cant expect immediate impact.
i see Ohio St perhaps falling FURTHER back, unless tremendous individual improvements are made-- which can but rarely happen -- or a couple studs come thru the trf portal. Realistic outlook, as of today not optimistic but as Hank Urbas says, "U R allowed to improve."
But just wishing it doesnt mean it will happen. ....I'll give u another quote, from Woody Hayes who said, "The word i hate most is hopefully".
