Leading up to the 2019-20 season, Ohio State had two promising heavyweights on the roster in Singletary and Kerkvliet, and a third in Traub who no one knew about but ended up having a strong season.
A year later, none of them was the starter at heavyweight and Tate Orndorff went on to AA.
All that to say, these sort of lineup jams tend to sort themselves out and today's problems won't necessarily be tomorrow's problems.
The bigger concern, in my opinion, is the staff's continued commitment to recruiting 220 pounders. These guys do not fit into a college weight class. That was true even for Kyle Snyder, but he was so good it didn't matter and he was able to score takedowns against giants like Gwiz and Coon.

With Malik Heinselman entering his fourth year and Decatur not able to wrestle effectively at 133 I’d like to see the Buckeyes recruiting some kids to fill that end of the lineup. I’ve read that Echemendia is interested in possibly dropping to 133. Can’t say I have a great deal of faith in that plan working out well.

That is a fair criticism; however, if we look back in recent history I think we’d find that smaller, more agile and athletic heavys have had more recent success in the past two decades. Recruiting a behemoth like Cassiopi or the kid out of Iowa State last year has, while good has not ascended to the same levels of greatness. Orndorf, while good, is probably never going to achieve something higher than a low AA status. He lacks the athleticism to go with guys like Kirklivket, Parris, etc. The prototypical heavy is a quick, flexible, and technical wrestler that competes at round 240/250 Gable Steveson is an outlier/ generational talent. Since 1999 only six or seven of the champs have been guys you would consider full size heavys. In my opinion you get a stud like Feldman, who possesses the athleticism, frame to grow, and is technically proficient, and then you bulk them up a little. I’m in favor of the 220 recruit. I think Singletary was recruited with the thought that he could fill out, he didn’t. Traub was never recruited with the idea that he would start. But stranger things have happened.

Seeing Lucas Byrd develop the way he has definitely has to sting a bit. I think it’s easy to look a Decatur with a level of hindsight recruiting bias. The fact is that he was a world team member in high school. Based on accolades alone you take him over just about any kid in the country. I think the staff probably thought he would hold the fort down at 133 for four years, but alas it wasn’t meant to be. I was keeping my fingers crossed that when Gabe Tagg entered the portal his brother Julian might do the same. Julian would slot in nicely at 133 for the foreseeable future.
Gonzales appears to be an option moving forward at 125, but I think there is a belief that he will end up at 133 at some point. We will also have to wait and see on Betancourt. I agree that the lightweights need some absolute attention moving forward. Hopefully they pull some of these kids in from the monster weekend. I’m hopeful that we start to see the commitments trickle in after jr and cadet worlds. The Bucks have achieved limited success at 125 during the TR era. Technically we could get two more years out of Malik. Let’s hope he continues to trend upward

Jared - I am in agreement with respect to Feldman and the current breed of heavies. I suspect he will put on 20 pounds of good weight. How big was Cassar in 2019?
Regarding Misita, he may be 197. Didn’t he recently beat Shumate? I also read on another board that Shumate may not be a lock to bucks next year. I have no idea how reliable that info is; hopefully, that isn’t the case.
Willie Saylor tweeted that Mendez and Bouzakis might be a package deal. I really hope the buckeyes land them. Imagine a couple years from now a lineup with Karchla, Sasso, Paddy, Mendez, Bouzakis, Misita, Shumate (maybe he makes 184?) and Feldman. That’s could be a title contender there.

Willie's #1 160 Rocco Welsh has Buckeyes in final list of schools. Surprisingly he doesn't include PSU and he is a PA kid.

Sounds like Mendez might be committing to Purdue but I hope I’m wrong

Mendez to Purdue would be an epic recruiting win for that program. Honestly, would be shocking to me, but what do I know. Sure seems like he would attend a school with a top-level FS club to train for international events.

Willie tweeted a top 5 recruit was committing this weekend and then I saw a tweet from Purdue wrestling on adding a big piece and assumed it was Mendez to Purdue but it was Ramos transferring from Minnesota to Purdue.

Ya had me really bummed there for a few. The prevailing rumor mill seems to be that the Bucks were the clubhouse leader, but you can never truly count out PSU. Im still very curious about the lightweights heading into the next two years. Outside of the 220 commit it just seems like things have been so quiet on the recruiting front the last two years. Couple that with the coaching staff shake up and I think the Bucks are do for some positive news to kick the program back on the upward trajectory.

You're a young single guy at a bar talking to an attractive woman. She's cool, fun and everything seems to be going well. Then, out of nowhere, a guy comes over who's rich, good looking and also really cool. She smiles at you and walks off with him.
That guy is PSU. And if he really wants your girl, you're in trouble.
