Discussion Topic: Should Tom Ryan have been Coach of the Year?

DC: It's not that a good case can't be made for Ryan. One certainly exists. My feeling, however, is that we always end up on the proverbial "slippery slope" when hypotheticals become part of the discussion.
How would Coach X have done if he'd had the same talent? Who did more with less? Stuff like that. Brands team won the Big Ten and the NCAA's. That's a good reason to give a man a COY award.
Because I'm old, I recall when Albert Belle had the best batting numbers in the AL in 1995. Boston and east coast sports writers, however, insisted that Mo Vaughn was doing more to help his team. Sports Illustrated made the case for Vaughn in a cover story. So, Belle, who hit 50 homers, batted around .330 and drove in like 150 RBI, for a team that had the best record, didn't get the MVP. Vaughn, whose numbers were a little lower all around, did. It just goes to show how the media often knows nothing and can follow the wrong scent.

And the media hated Belle.
