I also felt this year's senior class was not as strong as next year's will be.

Is Senior Nationals now fixed at Virginia Beach for the time being or will it be moving somewhere else soon?

I would say only about 1/3 of the top 30 seniors in Ohio are in the seniors field.
I would say that LESS than half of seniors who are nationally ranked are at this tournament.

With regard to Ohio's senior class, I'll make a few comments:

1) We didn't have as many "superstars" as usual.
2) Ohio's senior class in almost any given year is likely to be among the top five in the nation. Why? Because we have the third most kids involved in high school wrestling. Only Cali and NY have more.
3) Ohio, PA, Ill, NJ, CA, NY are usually going to have more top talent than any other states. Other states such as Iowa and Michigan often have good classes as well.

The big difference for Ohio at Sr Nationals this year is that so many top level seniors chose not to compete. We used to win because so many of our best guys chose to go. Things have changed. In particular, early signings by wrestlers make this tourney less important than in the past. Here are some seniors that didn't participate: Magrum, Jameson, Witt, Tank, Boyd, Jordan. What do they have in common? All were already committed to a school.

The Class of 2008 may not have been the strongest as in recent years but this class is very deep and has been that way from their freshman year. The top wrestler can be debated in this class as no one wrestler stands out from each other.

Next year the Class of 2009 may not be as deep but there is a lot more star power with Taylor and Palmer being the two best wrestlers in the nation. While this year I don't think Ohio had any of the senior wrestlers in the Top 20.

Scouting 174 prospects...Vinson (MT), Meredith (CA) and Elliott (KS) are all guys that showed some talent in this event. Vinson gave Collins a tough bout as did Elliott against Roddy. Meredith ended up placing.

CMU recruits Eric Cubberly and Ben Bennett look very good. Does any coach do a better job than Borelli at identifying early some overlooked prospects and reeling them in?

Buckeye recruits Kusar and Hiles finished 7th and 6th.

Anyone know what happened to Justin Toth? I know he was registered. I thought he could do well at 103.

Ohio only had 1 placer between 103 and 140 lbs--Skonieczny.

From the rankings I had for the senior class heading into this season - say what you may about my opinions - only ten of those in the top 30 competed at the NHSCA Senior Nationals.

Of those seniors that appeared in this year's state finals - 15 were at NHSCA Seniors, 32 were not.

For the sake of argument, let's look at the AWN national rankings (you can argue who is and isn't in - but trends still are present) and see how many of those ranked kids wrestled at seniors.
103- 2 in, 2 out
112- 1 in
119- 2 in, 1 out
125- 2 in, 4 out
130- 3 in, 3 out
135- 5 in, 3 out
140- 1 in, 2 out
145- 4 in, 5 out
152- 3 in, 9 out
160- 4 in, 5 out
171- 6 in, 4 out
189- 4 in, 7 out
215- 5 in, 6 out
285- 3 in, 7 out

The numbers yield some obvious conclusions:
(1) Seniors is down as an event
(2) It's hard to tell if this is a bad senior class for Ohio or not. I think this is a pretty deep senior group overall. Seems to be deeper than next year's.
