True but it's possible Scott returned to Okie State without an agreement in place. We're just engaging in conjecture at the moment. That said, I assumed an agreement was in place. Possibly I was wrong. I assumed it was a succession plan since he gave up a high level HC position. He’s a good coach, but I can think of half a dozen coaches I would take over him that Okie State wouldn’t even consider. They need a complete shift in philosophy and approach. Collegiate programs are rather incestuous and love to hire “one of their own”. There’s a lot higher success rates of organizations, companies, etc that go outside of the old boys network to find successors. I totally agree that Taylor doesn’t have the coaching credentials of Colman Scott, but each of the modern day coaching “greats” didn’t either. Point in case, when Smith took over, he was in his 20s and had just finished competing. He was young and unproven and current…and he ended up being the perfect hire. Could it be the wrong move and blow up in their faces? Absolutely. But sometimes you’ve got to take the big risk to get the big reward. Colman Scott definitely “leveled up” UNC, that’s a great way to put it. He improved them, but he didn’t transform them. He’s a very good coach, but he’s not the next legendary coach. I don’t know that Taylor is either, but he’s certainly got the potential to be. They’re not shooting for a Par on this hole, they’re going for an Eagle. Am I wrong on this? Also, is there any chance that Colman Scott could stay on and be the Casey Cunningham to Taylor’s Cael Sanderson?        Discussion Topic: John Smith retires at Okie State Casey Talbott added to this discussion on May 4, 2024 ^^^ Good take, IMO. I’m guessing most top tier programs would rather see Scott hired, than Taylor (?). Sense is that Taylor would shake things up a bit, and attract high-level talent. And re Scott then staying on, assuming he’s amenable to this, that could be a win-win. I admire their commitment to wrestling. Just a very odd scenario.
