If you don't like the rules to the game, you can always leave it.
We've all had to do that in some respect or another.
The person that wins is the one that games it the best or cheats or both.
UM placed higher than tOSU as did other teams that used the portal. That probably tastes like crow.
We all know when we hear excuses.
No different than a wrestler that walks off the mat and says that guy stayed on my ankle for 5 seconds and ref didn't call it.
It may be true. It might be unfair. But it's the game.
Unless you make the rules, game or cheat; your gonna end up on the south side of those calls.

Like Nick Saban did, for instance.

Game the rules -- yes.
Cheat -- never.
Integrity > winning. Always.

What is "virtue signaling" and how does it apply here?

I'll take a stab at it.
Virtue signaling is something disingenuous AF.
It presents one perspective absent the whole story which promotes oneself as acting with virtue while others act with greed and selfishness.
FTR, I think this whole situation is blown out of proportion, which happens when you take a snapshot of the situation.
When you feel a certain way at a particular time without having totally thought through the repercussions and voice your opinion, it can sound a bit weak.
There is always objective truth which takes a lot of time to decode and cannot be reduced to a sound bite.

There have been two transfers worth pursuing the last two years: Messenbrink over Hepner and Cardenas over Geog.
The Bucks pursued both. It didn’t work.
Maybe you recruit Dean Hamiti but only if it’s for 165.
It made little sense to recruit Nagao over Bouzakis, Davison over Feldman, or even Griffith over Kharchla. The Bucks were well invested at those weights.
This idea that Ohio State is somehow averse to the portal is foolish.
It needs to be said that low AA finishes do very little in a NCAA team race. If you’re gonna hit the portal, it needs to be to fill a weak weight or to grab an individual title contender.

The misconception is that OHST, more specifically Tom Ryan, ***IS*** averse to the portal. And that is the issue.
Tom Ryan stated plainly that he is not against the idea of the portal. What I took from his segment on FRL dealt with what was being posted by Pyles -
AND OTHERS
- concerning what OHST has done.
And then it got terribly conflated when people used McKenna & Orndorff as examples of OHST using the portal + NIL. TR stated that those transfers occurred before portal + NIL. The last, and quite frankly most ridiculous claim was that Tom Ryan is a hypocrite because he himself was a transfer and is now coming out against it. A) He is not against the portal and B) the difference between what Tom Ryan did leaving Syracuse and arriving at Iowa is apples and airplanes compared to today's portal + NIL.

Pyle has always come off as sanctimonious. I personally love when actual athletes/coaches call out the media.
He should have no license to argue with a Coach like Tom Ryan in my opinion.
He drives people away from Flo. I'm one of them.

Amen to that. Don't care for Pyles at all. I would never give a penny to flo.

Agree that Pyles has probably exceeded his expiration date. But InterMat is in bed with Pugsly Saylor. Can't stand him either.

One of my favorite movies is 'The Natural.'
One of my favorite scenes is when Roy Hobbs asks Max, "Did you ever play ball?"
Kinda wish Coach Ryan would have asked Pyle that question, in wrestling form.
And yes I know there is an important place for journalism in sports.

This whole story was a big nothing-burger.
Pyles consistently argues in bad faith and plays semantics after he's been called out.
TR is sometimes too passionate and gets down in the mud with the idiots online, against his better judgment.

Yes. Also, don't make criticisms (veiled or otherwise) about other programs.
