I’ll take Davino in a low scoring bout.
I’ll abstain from 165 or 197. We haven’t seen Hepner or Geog in a while. If they are healthy and in shape (Geog) and motivated (Hepner) I’m giving them the edge.

People are underestimating Davino. While this may be a close match they do have one common opponent in Jax Forrest. Davino is 2-0 vs Forrest and Gonzales lost to him 12-4 last year. Davino should be a pretty heavy favorite. I am not sure that Bouzakis is better than Davino honestly. Davino was a top p4p wrestler for a reason.
Birden and Hepner I am not sure about. Probably a slight edge to Hepner. He is very tough on top and did beat Kharchla and amine and has the college experience. . I hope Birden wins as that will be a good sign for the future however.
Shumate has seemed to improve. This is the only match truly deciding a starting spot. I am excited for this one. Shumate was active in the offseason while we didn’t really see Geog. I’ll take Geog but wouldn’t be surprised if Shumate wins.

Davino is very very good like I said. Bouzakis better not have a bad open like he did last year or Tom may make a move.
Birden loses in ultimate tiebreak. Hepner is difficult to wrestle. Even messenbrink couldn’t run up score too much on him. Birden has a bright future

Glad to see Davino with a comfortable win over Gonzales, who is no slouch.
Birden right there with Hepner. I know Hepner really fell off last season but a top 20 guy. Birden could plug in the next 4 years after this season.
Geog 4-2 over Shumate. Not sure how I feel about this, 2 guys very familiar with one another, just want to see something from both.

Wrestle offs are not great indicators of how the lineup shakes out or the trajectory of each athlete. Hunter Stieber, Carson Kharchla, and other AA caliber guys have taken loses or looked rather pedestrian. I personally don’t put a ton of stock in the results, and I’m not sure the coaches do either. Geog and Shumate should be close. Both are top 15ish guys that have wrestled each other for three years. Hopefully we see one of them kick it into another level this season.

Watched Geog vs Shumate.
Couple things;
Shumate's first attempt at drag was legitimate except that he went to waist and was unable to gain enough position. He can go single with just one hand on the leg as well there. A positional win is getting the opponent hands to the mat with a front body lock. I'm fairly certain he's never drilled it that way with that purpose or end goal in mind. But what would I know, just another keyboard warrior. lol.
If you just watched Sadulaev v Taylor that is his go to dominant position. There are quite a few skills to acquire there. Shumate has a physique similar to Sadulaev. He's very athletic and strong but his confidence has taken a beating as his high school offense was incomplete and developmentally stunted by the dynamics of the American system.
Geog's high crotch was a simple elbow lift that happened due to a momentary lapse in position of Shumate. Does he even realize that a single momentary lapse in position was the difference in the match. Or was he told that he just needs to work harder.
Any who, whatever.

One more thing,
The guy that gets this position, Aoden Sinclair, is an Askren disciple. Askren is really focused on technical skill. Doesn't surprise me a bit and Sinclair is not a better athlete than Shumate.

Sinclair wrestling this past weekend at 197, had a MD.
Anyone know if the Bucks are at any opens this weekend such as the MSU Open?
