Nick, there’s an important bit of information missing from that discussion. The injury must have happened after the athlete triggered a year of eligibility. That didn’t happen with Feldman. He maintained four years of eligibility even after the injury.
But even if I’m wrong on that point the NCAA doesn’t immediately grant a medical hardship waiver. An athlete must apply for it. If granted, it’s tacked on to the end of the career. Athletes don’t have discretion on when to use it.
He never had an option to redshirt this year. His eligibility clock is ticking and can’t be paused.
