Just some thoughts. I like mccrone, he can be frustrating, but he’s in the lineup, assuming he’s the better option over killkery?
Bouzakis is so erratic. I do think he’s the best option and keep Davion’s redshirt. Bouzakis to me looks a lot bigger than he did last year. Maybe move up a weight next year
Mendez is a stud nothing else to say
DD is a solid wrestler, but i do think he’s reached his max potential
Paddy is great, hope he continues to improve.
Sammy is incredible, but I do think that his career is over. I don’t think he’s getting anywhere near the podium. I don’t think he’s finishing the season. This is where he is. The injury is incredibly unfortunate. It robbed him of a shot at a championship. That really sucks. I hope that lowlife gets the book thrown at him. Is Hepner still an option?
If Carson isn’t wrestling until the second semester, than I don’t blame Rocco for being upset. I love Carson but he’s done. I’m not sure Carson can beat Rocco, but I’m not in the room
I love Ryder, he’s so fun to watch. Not sure where he’d been. He still needs to develop. Shumate made it back down he’s always an option
geog gets hurt shumate an option here?
Feldman gets screwed this season with 5 30 year old guys ahead of him. Keep grinding big man.
These are just my thoughts, but what do I know. Go bucks!!

Best I've seen Paddy wrestle. His composure and staying in position for 9 minutes were great. Antrell is an explosive talent. Looking forward to that match up. He can reshot Antrell as Saldate did. That is his best strategy imo.

My concern as well for Sammy was getting bullied; which Wilson did at the end. I imagine he lost part of his intestines which wouldn't lend itself to dehydration and possibly stressful eating habits. He still has a bag of tricks and he if can adapt his game a little more for strength and instead of standing straight up, coerce his opponents into wrestling from the mat while still maintaining reaction time; he could AA. He can't afford to stance straight up against horsepower.

I watched the Barraclough v Sasso match. Sammy was right in it for the first two periods; made what I consider a mistake when he switched his grips and Barraclough scored. Got ridden last period. Also, wrestling multiple matches back-to-back takes a different kind of conditioning than duals. Some problems to solve for sure. Have to think like an engineer and outside the box a bit.

He is wrestling at a high level.

Looked like something in the torso, perhaps rib injury.

Question for Rex specific to Paddy’s matches against Johnson (quarters) and Taylor (semis)…

…. I noticed a lot of 1 and done shots between Paddy and his opponents in both of those matches. I did not see many shots or chain wrestling and I’m wondering if holding position trump‘s re-shots and chain wrestling. Maybe there was no opportunity but wanted to get your take.

I trust Sammy over Hepner all day. His career is not over but it has been impacted by the injury. He is still successful. He is a solid AA contender. Is Hepner?

Can Rogo go 97? I don’t know. He looked the right size last year at 84. His throws clearly won’t be as effective up a weight. If not, Rocco wrestles off with Carson or Rogo. He finished 2nd last year. He deserves the shot. Why is there no talk of Rogo shirting? I thought he was a true frosh last year.

Boozy, in my opinion, may not AA or win it all on a heater. He should start.

Feldman is a great wrestler. But at heavy. It’s tough to contend with that length he faces. He can do it against most. Against the best, it’s a tall order. His quickness can be the equalizer, as can his horsepower like KS.

Cannon best Herman 7-6 at CSU open then beat Chittum from ISU in finals.

Nice win

Cannon beat a really tough guy in Chittum who was an NCAA qualifier as a freshman last year. And he had a riding time point vs. Chittum, which was nice to see. Being that DD is dinged up at 149, and Cannon was at 149 for wrestle-offs, would it be a good move to have Cannon go back down to 149? They still have Herman at 157 if Paddy would get injured.

And by the way, as expected, Rocco pinned or TF'd his way to the 184 title at CSU today.

Yes, there were a lot of one-dimensional attacks in those matches mentioned.

Everyone develops at their own rate.

The big 3 influences are coaching, partners and aptitudes.

I like to see constant hand fighting to both sides with attacks that flow from the hand fighting, however, the first rule of wrestling is to never get out of position from which you can’t recover.

One of the difficulties in developing in a college room is too much live wrestling and not enough drilling.

You program yourself when you drill. You are creating pathways and behaviors that take on instant recognition upon which you can act.

When you get punished (negatively reinforced) for taking shots during the developmental phase it affects your offense attack going forward. You might only feel comfortable with limited attacks, such as one dimensional or simple attacks from which you can recover.

Good coaching can circumvent this and create offensive attacks that are progressions from a start point. When guys are just trying to survive a practice, a lot of effort goes into building toughness but far less into developing an offense.

You win matches by scoring points.

Paddy wrestled 99% of the time from a disciplined position which I will take every day and twice on Tuesday. Does he have enough offense? Sort of. Certainly enough to be an All American. I hadn’t seen that devotion to being a position wrestler before. Did he entertain a lot? No. Was he masterful at things he did? Yes. Could he have more offense? Yes.

When Bo Bassett scores three takedowns in 20 seconds, it’s because his opponent has not developed a strong positional foundation.

I just finished watching Cam Amine versus Peyton Hall. Cam Amine is a position guy. Not a bunch of attacks.

Dean Hamiti is an example of a wrestler with lots of offense. Polar opposite aptitudes. What would his trajectory look like if he started at Penn State as a freshman. I’ll just say that he’d be further along a different developmental curve.

Coaches need to address positions for which their wrestlers will engage and give specific recommendations or instructions which benefit said wrestler. Otherwise, the coach is a placeholder and just addressing arbitrary bullshit and the wrestler learns by trial and error in an organic open-ended way. It takes a lot longer and is inefficient. Most old school coaches are this type and are successful because they simply have kids that are survivors, love wrestling and want to win very badly.

Partners will make or break you as well. You need someone that will challenge you, engage in positions and will be helpful at drilling.

just my opinion.

Not just in college rooms; it's true in HS rooms as well. MANY kids only want to live wrestle. There is certainly a place for it, but I'd rather spend an hour drilling a technique or series of techniques with 15 minutes of live situational wrestling than just live wrestle for an hour.

Lastly...this quote...
"Coaches need to address positions for which their wrestlers will engage and give specific recommendations or instructions which benefit said wrestler. Otherwise, the coach is a placeholder and just addressing arbitrary bullshit and the wrestler learns by trial and error in an organic open-ended way. It takes a lot longer and is inefficient. I enjoyed watching the tournament on Flo. In general, their coverage was pretty good.

The Buckeyes wrestled pretty well and finished third despite having a backup at 149, no wrestler at 174 and injury defaults at 197 and 285.

McCrone looks improved from last year and only struggles with wrestlers who cleanly finish their takedowns, giving him no opportunity to counter.

Bouzakis wrestled well also although it is a bit of a mystery to me how he let's matches get away from him. He was cruising in his 3rd place match and then the wheels almost came off.

Gallagher wrestled well throughout. I was surprised he medical forfeited the 3rd place match since I didn't see an injury occur in his previous match.

Shumate also wrestled well generally, although he was out of his depth when wrestling Keckeisen and Berge. One's a national champion and the other is an All-American.

I am hoping that the injuries to Geog and Feldman heal quickly, although they look like the type of injuries that could possibly be season ending.

Bruce, nice post. Agree with all of it.

Bouzakis’ third place bout is what he needed. A win but a continued reminder that he can’t lose focus no matter the score. Hopefully he grows from this.

McCrone is shaping up to be a great success story. Guys with his modest HS credentials don’t often crack lineups for premier programs. He’s got a shot to be an All-American as a sophomore.
