Going into the dual I thought the same thing.
Ugh.

Bouzakis got absolutely screwed by the ref. He put Davis on his back with zero points to show for it.
Also, Why is a reversal still only two points?? It seems like an obvious oversight. A reversal is harder than a takedown and is worth less. Okay.

As strong as Bouzakis is I can't believe Davis broke that cradle lock twice. It looked like he was going to get pinned but slipped out.

Buckeyes looked really good at most weights.
D’Emilio believed he could win and nearly did. Same for Carson. Zero intimidation shown. Carson’s leg got caught in a turk on Haines’ TD otherwise the match goes to OT.
Mendez is fine. He’s not gonna beat Bartlett every time out. These are all one takedown bouts.
Cannon absolutely pummeled star recruit Sealey and likely secured the starting spot. He’s heading to an open tournament with Sasso tomorrow with the hopes they meet in the bracket. I’d encourage the coaching staff to go with Cannon regardless of the outcome.
Did Lilledahl choose down on McCrone? Rare Cael coaching blunder.
Shumate competed hard for most of the match and then not at all for the last period.

Good dual but, like Iowa, Bucks missed opportunities. Agree with those who liked the efforts from Carson and D'Emilio. Bouzakis is always in it but has to figure out how to come out on top. Nice win for McCrone but PSU will adjust for next time.
Mendez is outstanding but struggles to get to his offense against the top guys at the wt. OT vs Jamieson and Vombauer...didn't finish early against Bartlett and then got caught in a scramble position (merkle) that forced him to bail. One loss is not a big deal but this weight class is very close with Jesse, Bartlett, Alirez, Hardy, Jamieson and Vombauer. If you had to bet, you'd probably pick Jesse but it's not a big gap and the margin for error is small. Incidentally, Barlett has not been overly impressive this season until last night.

I sat watching this trying to understand what happened. I believe I saw the official signal the reversal (although it was so quick that I am not sure). I then saw him swipe his arm twice and hold two fingers out which indicates two NF points earned. Some more rolling around and Davis was on his back again but not long enough for a count (IMO). Then the situation ended. I figured it was a 4 point swing.
At first, I thought the OSU staff threw a brick but I did not know why. When we were told that PSU threw the brick, I assumed it was over the NF but who knows?
After review the answer came back that the reversal counted and the was no NF. Why PSU got their brick back, I do not understand.
Honestly when Ryan and J stood there arguing over who knows what, I was surprised that they did not get charged with CMC or delay of match (or whatever the NCAA calls it).
It was such a scramble that I really believe the official might have forgotten who was in control. With two officials and video review, I don't understand it but the whole thing left me scratching my head.

I thought it didn’t actually matter who was in control when someone is put on his back. The swipes mean back points, but I could be wrong.

In the NCAA it might be different, although I don't think so. To score points for a NF, you have to be in control. The offensive man can be on his back and be pinned but he will not be giving up back points until control changes hands.
The swipes are not a requirement but are a courtesy.
I just went back and watched it unfold.

Go to 6:40 for the fun to begin. The official calls out two for the reversal (you can hear it) but his reversal signal is not done. He drops to the mat and you hear him count one, two. He then rotates to his left holding two fingers down indicating the count for the NF.
Honestly I would love to know what the officials saw and what they discussed before reaching the final call. I do not understand it.

Many good takes above on matches. Here are mine…
- A big shout out to Jason L Jackson. Thanks for the tickets. 3 rows from the mat, great seats.
- It was McCrone’s choice and he took top. He needs to take top from now on. If no, he may not have that opportunity. It was a great win and the crowd went crazy, but let’s level set. He looses that match 8 out of 10 times.
- Nick is so close vs top tier talent. He needs a signature win for his confidence and momentum. I think he is a rd of 12, but could be top 4. Agree w Jim B on his take about the refs. The ref was definitely holding 2 (for red) through the whole scramble. FYI, I hear Davis busted up his knee in a scooter accident and Cale was not happy.
- Mendez and Bo are so close (as is Alirez). Jesse is winning 3-2 all time including the all star match. All were 1 td matches. Mendez is also 1-0 vs Alirez in a freestyle match which was a 1 td match. All others are a step below. It’s about who is hot at NCAA’s. Is there really a difference between taking 2nd or 3rd? Not to those 3 as the goal is a championship. This is why seeding is less important to me. I realize it’s an easier path, but winning it all is the goal.
- DD wrestled a smart match. He needed to stay away from inside ties and he did. Most are asking themselves how does he not get that td. My answer is he did everything right and SVN is just a tough scrambler (i.e. Sasso in the past). I give SVN more credit than I would being down on DD. The big 10’s at this weight will be like the national tournament. Many top ranked guys.
- Props to Cannon. I don’t know how true, but I hear Sealey cut a ton of weight several days before the match. True or not, hats off to Cannon.
- When do we expect Paddy back? Shane Sparks said that Sasso and Cannon were going to wrestle in an open tournament to try to settle our starter at 157. If so, then this solidifies Paddy staying at 165
- Carson is right there. He has more trouble vs funky guys like Hamiti. Let’s hope he is a big 10 champ. One thing I noticed (and I was concerned about before the match) is his stamina. He has not wrestled a full season in a while. IMO, his stamina is what lost him the match. He is one of few to get in on Levi several times. He finished great (as he usually does) in the 1st. The lift in the first took a lot out of him.
- Star is on another level. Ryder is like McCrone in some ways. Most have them figured out and will stay away from dangerous positions. Ryder is a rd of 16.
- Seth was in a close match w 1 min left in the 2nd. Then Barr took it to another level. I am hit or miss on Seth, but see some good things out of him at times. Probably rd of 16.
- Nick beat a good wrestler last nigh. That is PSU’s future 285. it was a closer match than the score showed. I think Nick can learn from some of those close losses and I’m not down on him as most are. He repeats his NCAA performance from last year and can contend for a championship in his final 2 seasons.
Just my take on things.

Yes, and at 7:08 the ref actually says "Two, near fall".
So he awarded it.
Then following review, he took it away.
Not certain what the OSU coaches were questioning, following review.
Either the taking away of the near fall points or perhaps toward correcting the riding time in light of the reversal.
The refs did get the latter right, reducing Davis' advantage by 20 seconds or so.
In any event, I liked the way our guys competed.
But sure would have been nice to win one or three of the close ones.

Loved the match. No quit anywhere in the lineup. Mendez holds seed and 2 of Bouzakis, D’Emilio, and Carson pull it off it’s the match of the year.
Also, Jags and Stieber are the main coaches. That was clear. There were 3-4 times you could see J give instruction, the Buckeye did it, and it worked. One was the double by (I forget). I believe the cradle by Bouzakis. There were a couple of others.
Seth still seems small to me for 97. No quit, though.
My wife’s first wrestling match for Valentines Day. She thought it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.
It’s a start.

Roe, could be wrong but guessing the staff disagrees with your assessment of Shumate’s effort. He stopped defending shots in the third period.

He’s not the only one to get steamrolled in the 3rd by Barr. I think he’s just too small right now for the weight.

First period ended 0-0.
Third period started 4-0, with Shumate down.
Way easier to rack up a tech fall with near fall and takedown points now than it was.
I'm looking to see if Barr starts to show any cracks in his armor. He wrestles a real physical style. He's been doing it since November against high level opponents. It's a lot different than what some guys do in dispatching opponents without expending a ton of energy. Barr is redlining it every time out. It has become a flex. It's taxing on your immune system.
Anyway, it's a long season and you want to be your best at the end of it.
What I'm saying is that he may be unable to wrestle the third period post season with such vigor as he did during the regular season.
