Discussion Topic: So Starocci sounds like a good dude

Quote from Mark Cummings's post:

"

Quote from Roe Fox's post:

"I’m not sure Cael is done yet. I have colleagues who are PSU fans and thought JoPa got hosed. Those same people think Cael is unimpeachable.

I haven’t seen the recent TOSU documentary but want to. I don’t have HBO or Max. But Jim Jordan SEEMS to have plausible deniability, along with the passage of time. Will Cael? Will the wrestlers have the courage to speak up in real time?

As far as guessing about recruits and roster moves, that is what a forum is for."

Hi Roe. I would strongly encourage you to watch the Surviving Ohio State documentary. As someone who bleeds scarlet and gray, it left me with a very dirty feeling toward those in power. The administration covered for the doctor’s wicked behavior for decades. Jordan and Hellickson are cowardly men who lack honor. Fred Feeney’s story was among the most powerful although there were many, many others. Maybe Max has a one week free trial or something.

I would hope most organizations have a zero tolerance for the sort of nonsense alleged against Starocci. I’m also not naive enough to believe organizations have honor and integrity. They don’t. None of them. In a fair and just society, Cael would resign in disgrace but he won’t. He would have to be forced out by someone high up at the university who is willing to withstand the inevitable blow back by big dollar donors who want to continue seeing the Lions at the top of the wrestling world each year."

Very good synopsis Mark. Applause from the butcher in Cleveland.

A couple of years ago Malcom Gladwell wrote a book called ‘Talking to Strangers’, one specific portion of the book dug into the Penn State/ Sandusky case and specifically looked at why action wasn’t taken on multiple fronts by people who suspected something was wrong. Whether it’s PSU football, PSU wrestling, OSU, or Michigan State, all of these cases tend to thread around the same issue, a failure by those in charge to take action and report. Those that work with minors in the education, mental health, health care, coaching or other fields are legally mandated reporters when abuse or wrongdoing are suspected. I’m curious if that extends to the collegiate ranks. I would think Penn State would have a pretty strong investigative reaction to this situation at a minimum. Their history matters in this situation as does public opinion. There seems to be a prevailing problem collegiate handling of these types of allegations.

My guess nothing happens to anyone involved. PSU will do an investigation and move on. Carter won’t be welcomed back to PSU and Beu will move on as well.

PSU will win another NC and all will be forgotten.

Doesn't the fact that an investigation had been started mean that somebody DID report this to authorities?

Everybody seems to assume that the staff did nothing, so who relayed Bartlett's complaints to the authorities to start the investigation?

Dan, if you’re referring to the stolen items, Beau initiated the criminal investigation and the staff voiced support for it.

That’s the only investigation that I’ve seen mentioned.

I guess that is the part that I don't understand. If the staff was told about the thief and supported his complaint what more were they suppose to do?

As far as the other allegations, just how much information they actually had on those issues seems foggy to me. But again, there is an investigation so somebody had to report it to the authorities.

Dan, you say that there is an investigation into the non-theft allegations. If true, I missed that in the article. Please point me to it.

No. I have no idea. I am only saying that everybody is wanting to string the staff out to dry but it seems like they were told about the stolen stuff and reported it. I am not sure what people expect.

I haven't read that any of the other stuff was reported to them. I guess in short, I don't understand where the staff went wrong?

Well, one of the allegations: "Beau and Mark, a former teammate who requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation, alleged Starocci took nonconsensual explicit photos of them in the Nittany Lions’ locker room. Beau said the photos were reported to Sanderson along with the theft, but nothing came of it from the coach."

Of course we only see one side of the story presented in the article, but gosh if the coaches heard about a wrestler taking and circulating nude photos of other teammates, it seems like there are concrete actions the coaches could have taken. Again, we're not privvy to Starocci or coaches perspective at this time.

Big caveat--all of this is alleged and in need of investigation and full legal process. But if these allegations are true, what you have here is a staff potentially running cover for a predator.

See Ben's post:

That is a crime of an intimate nature that may have been reported and ignored by the staff. Combine that with other assertions in the article about his behavior in practices, alleged thefts, allegedly bringing underage women to the practice facility, etc.

How could you reasonably make the argument that members of staff weren't aware of these things? There is a pattern here that can easily lead to termination for cause.

Well, we may be having a discussion about this topic but when I go to Flo, the foremost site for college wrestling info, it's crickets. Wrestling journalism simply doesn't exist when it's needed.

I've got an idea for some new villains in the Marvel universe.

Raw Dog, The Predator and Cheat Code.
