McCrone beats Bouzakis - I didn't see the match, but I wondered if the outcome was due to familiarity and/or the weight cut for Nic. Pleasantly surprised at Paddy winning it all, good job. Any word on why Carson didn't wrestle?

McCrone was able to get Bouzakis tangled up. Bouzakis got in deep multiple times but couldn't finish.

Shumate's performance was perplexing. I saw the match where he got pinned and it was a completely lackluster performance.

Shumate just looked, well, bad. Not sure why. He has so much ability but none of it was on display today. I'm sure he's more disappointed than any of us.

Grey Burnett is a must get. The Bucks are recruiting fine but they haven’t been able to land the super elite types (Blaze, Jax, Bassett, Miller, Lockett, Duke). Burnett, a world medalist, is either in that class or darn close. He’d be a huge pull if we get him and a devastating loss if we don’t. He split two matches with PSU commit Sidun, the top ranked 120, and beat Vinny Kilkeary.

Ethan Stiles is enormous. I’m hoping his poor showing is attributable to a difficult weight cut. Keep in mind he competed at 157 much of last year. Not overly worried. He was a freshman All American, and those guys tend to figure things out.

Agree with those who say Bouzakis looked good. He did. But congrats to Brendan McCrone. He’s fighting for his job and it showed.

Davino is all business.

Big key to the dual season is keeping Paddy, Kharchla and Geog healthy.

I watched periodically throughout the day and here are my observations:

125-Kilkeary looked muscled up but is clearly 3rd best for the Bucks at this weight. Nice win for Bouzakis over Knox but I think we need to start giving McCrone his due. He was somewhat inconsistent last year but had some huge wins over highly ranked kids including a world champion and several AA. Clearly his top game is ahead of his neutral but it looked like he was defending leg attacks much better. He outwrestled Bouzakis. Got the first takedown and had a cradle locked up when Bouzakis yelled out. I don't see this as a fluke and feel like future matches could go either way.

133-Davino looked great in the matches I saw. It looks like he had a close semifinal match but I didn't see it.

149-Stiles didn't look great in the matches I saw. Obviously he is very capable based on last years results. Maybe he's a slow starter, maybe still getting weight under control.

157-Cannon looked good in the matches I saw. Miller is a stud.

165-Congrats to Paddy on winning. I would like to see him continue to be aggressive throughout the match. 165 probably a better weight for him than 157 but time will tell.

184-Dylan Fishback impressed me the most of anyone today. He hit an array of slick leg attacks and finishes well. I'm excited to watch him this year.

197-I think today added clarity to this picture. I had Shumate as the favorite coming into this weekend based on is strong round of 12 finish last year at NCAA. I think after today Geog looks like the guy. He majored the guy who beat Shumate and handled Rotgotske in the finals. Hopefully the competition has forced him to level up and he can get on the podium at NCAA this year.

285-Feldman looked relentless in his leg attacks. Feldman is at his best when he is constantly attacking and hopefully he is healthy and this will be the version we see this year.

Scott, thanks for shouting out Fishback. I omitted him in my post.

Bucks badly needed someone at 184 when Rocco left and thankfully Fishback became available. He is very good and like many others in the lineup it’s time for him to jump levels.

FYI Flo wrestling facebook page has some short snippets of a lot of the OSU matches including the Bouzakis TD attempt that was countered by McCrone into his TD.

Quick tidbits from yesterday:

Bouzakis up until McCrone looked like a beast. Wrestling a teammate who you think is the "favorite" has happened to the Buckeyes before, Hepner over Kharchla comes to mind.

Stiles- I never watched him wrestle much before this season so I don't really know his style but it appears hes not amazing at any one position, not going to be a bonus point machine and may not be worthy of his #3 preseason ranking.

Cannon- Really was pulling out hope we was going to beat Miller. Where would Miller be ranked right now if he wrestled in college? Top 5 for sure.

165- Paddy looked aggressive, didn't get ridden out. let's hope this continues.

Feldman- didnt look impressive.

Geog- Looked good from all positions.

Next week Bucks have a dual with UTC- Could see McCrone starting 125 and maybe a few other backups.

125 Bouzakis looked better imo. We have seen plenty of buckeyes in last ten years not win wrestle off but be starters.

133- Davino did what he was supposed to

141- jesse looked good vs ech

149- stiles and Shaw both didn’t impress. A little worrisome here

157-wish cannon beat miller but we all know Miller would be an AA now.

165-paddy looked good against no competition

174- staff was smart with Carson

184- fiahback looked good. He won’t finish top 5 but should be in the next group of 5

197-geog looked good. Everyone slept on him for some reason. I think he can AA

285- worried about Feldman. He looks like he’s regressing. Was hoping for a rebound year but I don’t see him better than any of the guys in top 5 right now.
