Discussion Topic: Coaching Question
Brian Nicola added to this discussion on November 5, 2025

I rarely give me opinion on here, prefer reading.

I'm a high school coach, but the "no handshake" would 100% be a factor in immediate reps. I actually really like Bouzakis, and maybe it was reactionary (we've all been there)...but how does that reflect on the ideals of the program, and against a teammate, no less. Both McCrone and Bouzakis are blackshirt recipients, and this is supposed to be a measurement of full program wrestler. Again, for full clarity, I like Bouzakis, but it would be a factor.

tldr: bouzakis might be better, but post-match behavior would play in on the short-term.

I don't think this is very complicated.

McCrone has earned the spot for now, but like a wrestle-off, the result is not permanent.

It's incumbent upon Bouzakis to seek out competition away from the team schedule to prove he can perform consistently at the weight. If he does that, we can reopen this conversation in January.

Quote from Nick Lecklider's post:

"I would have them wrestle off again or have the team vote on what to do at least."

They just wrestled. You don't get to just keep matching them up until you get the result you wanted.

One of your more insane takes. It's not a popularity contest.

I have never seen Bouzakis engage in unsportsmanlike conduct. In fact, he's usually generous in spirit. I don't know the back story (if any) behind his failure to shake Mccrone's hand. Neither do any of you. I thought Brian Matthews had a good take on the situation but am sure the coaches have thoughts as well.

Can anyone link a video of Bouzakis declining to shake McCrone’s hand? I’ll have a hard time believing it without evidence. Nic seems like a good teammate.

Drew,
I didn't believe it either so I went to Flo and watched the Clarion Open "Finals Mat" video which shows the entire set of final matches. Nic didn't shake his hand.

If you have a Flo subscription, you can navigate to the 7:01:45 mark in this video:

Bouzakis storms off without a handshake and McCrone gives a "WTH?" shrug with his palms raised.

I don't personally read too much into it. Someone can be a good teammate and also not be at their best in an emotionally charged moment. A mistake, definitely, but not something that can't be patched up with a private conversation later.

I’m going to take a different outlook on tOSU 125 situation…

- Nick B was down 5-0 with about 1:23 left in period 2. He then got a takedown and rode out BM the rest of the period. In the 3rd, Nick B took down and escaped pretty quickly. He was in on BM’s legs a few times and just couldn’t finish. The match ended 5-4.
- I think this is a good thing for both wrestlers. Nick B is usually an explosive finisher when in on his opponents legs. In the past, less than stellar wrestlers have been able to finish fairly easily (at times) on BM. This tells me BM is getting better in the neutral position.
- Give credit to BM for the win and perhaps getting better in the neutral position. Nick B will make him a better wrestler defending explosive shots.
- Give credit to Nick B for coming back from a 5-0 deficit and for getting an early escape in the 3rd to cut the deficit to 5-4. Also give him credit for cutting so much weight and being able to wrestle well. My guess is the Knox win could have been better if he was used to cutting so much weight.
- BM will make Nick B better at finishing his shots. If not, Nick B may not be wrestling at the Big 10 Championships.

Both guys will push each other only making each other better. It’s a good problem to have.

I'm sure there isn't a huge back story or one I care to dig into.

Fact is, Nic let his emotions get to him after a frustrating loss. Back story or not, you shake the guys hand especially if it's a teammate. I think it was a poor reflection on Nic in the moment and the team in general. And this is a coming from one of the biggest Bouzakis fans out here.

Rob--I accept your point but I just think we're making too big a deal out of it. Again, my opinion....nothing else.

I will post a theory about why he didn't shake hands, although it is probably wrong. When McCrone had the legs in Bozakis started yelling in pain. I noticed that even though Nic continued to yell McCrone still left the legs in. I think if I had the legs in on a teammate and they started yelling I would have hopped off immediately. So perhaps Nic was ticked at him for not immediately releasing the pressure.

McCrone had legs in and had been riding him for some time when Bouzakis yelled out (the position hadn't changed). McCrone continued wrestling until the official broke it, which is exactly what he is supposed to do.
